Battlefield: Hardline Penalized For Trying Something Different?

Once again, the necessary disclaimer: Battlefield: Hardline isn't a fantastic game.

Our review is coming within 24 hours and it'll be clear that Visceral's fresh take on the long-running Battlefield franchise, while refreshing, has its fair share of flaws.

But what I don't quite get is the hypocrisy of the gaming community. I mean, I'm reading reviews that are pretty clear about their dissatisfaction with the campaign. Some of that dissatisfaction is indeed warranted, but I think a lot of it stems from the fact that this doesn't really feel like a standard Battlefield entry. Hell, it doesn't feel like a standard FPS. And that's where it's losing people, I think.

I've been saying the same thing for years: People can bitch and whine and moan about how the first-person shooter genre needs to innovate. We heard this same complaint throughout much of the previous generation, what with Call of Duty ruling the roost. But it seemed like whenever a FPS did try something new, it didn't fare as well with critics and gamers. And why? Because they like what they like. Change the formula too much, and it's no longer what they like; it's no longer a first-person shooter, really.

Now, the multiplayer in Hardline has plenty of freshness and feels like more of the quintessential "shooter" we're all used to, but the campaign offers a significant twist on the regular ol' shoot first-think never formula. Perhaps it's safe to say that FPS aficionados have no interest in high-speed chases, stealth, and arresting suspects without killing them. Okay, that's what I mean when I talk about hypocrisy; they say they want something different but in truth, they only respond to the familiar. It's the same story in most any consumer market, really.

But to see a game penalized for simply trying something new, for basically responding to the "legit" calls for innovation, seems like a massive double standard. Sure, there are problems. However, we can't even call such an attempt a positive thing...?

Im very disappointed so far.

i mean - I haven't got to play yet - but the digital edition is taking forever to install so i wont get to play until tomorrow..

I haven't read the reviews. The cops n robbers idea seems great but judging from the beta it isn't that the concept that was bad, it's the game mechanics. The vehicles handle terribly, the guns handle terribly, the graphics are mediocre and it just felt dated. It's just not BF.

I can agree to this completely. Played the beta for a little while, and it pretty much sold me off the game.

One of the big selling points of the game was supposed to be intense, high speed chases. But they definitely dropped the ball on that one, because the cars handle like crap, the camera gets shoved into the trunk if you go third person, and there is a severe lack of physics. I can't count how many times in the beta, I was rammed head-on, and both cars simply stopped moving. No recoil, no crashing and twisting of parts, just plain brought to a dead stop.

And the gunplay just didn't feel as fluid as it used to in previous entries. Everything felt stiff, and lifeless.

I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, since it was technically a beta. But I've been watching streams on and off this past evening, and by and large, it seems that the same things that sold me off the beta, are still there in the full game.

As soon as I saw it was cops and robbers I wasn't interested. I never have been interested in that angle. Innovation in the way of Resistance: Fall of Man, or Vanquish are what I crave.

I totally agree with Ben on the hypocrisy of gamers.

They scream for something 'new and fresh', but that the end of the day, they like more of what they like.

i love the concept of it, sounds like a good idea on paper, which is why its the first battlefield i've ever gotten, but something just feels off. The guns, cars and movement all feel really stiff. The storyline is enough to keep me entertained but it all feels so cliched, they tried something new and yet i feel like i know exactly whats gonna happen next

I just don't think the things that have been tried in FPS are the right things to evolve it yet. Except Bulletstorm and Resistance 3 additions of course.

There's better places to make it different though than arresting foes.

It's usually damned if ya do and damned if ya don't in games. You're either Generic or too unfamiliar. Unless you have the right name at the top of your game.

How come, on consoles, you cant have 64 man battle royals in multiplayer like you can on PC? I thought for sure this new "more powerful" generation would at least let that happen.

BF4 on PS4 allows for 64-person MP Conquest.

Also, on the PS3, MAG allowed for 128 and even 256-players, I believe. That game was so awesome and underrated...

Innovative/different doesn't mean people automatically have to love how a game is innovative or different. It's not enough to come up with a different concept, you have to execute, and plenty of games in the FPS genre have done that over the years, and met with great success. The first Halo, Call of Duty 4, Borderlands, Bulletstorm, Bioshock, etc. All innovative, different, well made games met with critical acclaim and commercial success.

So maybe people aren't bagging on Hardline for being different. Maybe they're bagging on it because it's not very good.

In my opinion, I don't think there's any innovation left for first person shooters. However, if I'm picking up either Battlefield or Call of Duty, it's for the multiplayer. Granted, I do play the campaign, but I don't expect a stellar campaign. If the multiplayer is broken or they tweaked it in ways where I don't want to play it, I won't pick it up. In this case Battlefield:Hardline, I didn't pick it up because I wasn't interested in it.

That, and I'm working on my extensive pc backlog right now (Steam has amazing deals by the way). And I am picking up Final Fantasy Type 0 because I haven't played a new final fantasy game since final fantasy XIV. Sorry Visceral/DICE, I simply wasn't interested in it.

i said in a post on FB that hardline should have ben its own thing and not part of the main battlefield series as everyone was pritty salty after BF4 so i'm not surprised it got a bit of plack but then it was a bit of a half assed battlefield game in my opinion and then i don't think that it as well excecuted as it could have been
