Zipper Interactive Would've Delivered A Brand New FPS For PS4

For the record, we always thought MAG had a ton of fantastic potential.

It really was one of the most entertaining online games of the generation in our estimation, and those who played it for a while perfectly understand its appeal. That's why we were saddened to hear about developer Zipper Interactive's closing.

And unfortunately, it means we're missing out on a new PlayStation 4 title. According to VideoGamer citing former Zipper designers, the team was planning a next-gen FPS; a brand new IP, in fact. But that was "halted upon the dissolution of the studio." Zipper had also made SOCOM: US Navy SEALs, so they knew what they were doing in the first- and third-person shooter categories.

Their last title was the decent Unit 13 for the PlayStation Vita. It's too bad we'll never see that PS4 shooter but then again, we probably have enough FPSs scheduled for the new generation, don't we?

I remember being genuinely let down during a prior E3 press conference because MAG was the 'big game' Sony revealed to close the show.

I sorta agree. Its not that the games itself was bad (for me atleast), it was just I hate games where when the servers go down its gone forever. I know the game was all about big battles but I wish it had split screen and system link.

MAG is easily the most underrated FPS this gen. When played correctly or with people with mics it was downright awesome. Wish this wasn't happening to Zipper. Who knows what we might've got.

+1 - I've played more MAG than any other two FPS games combined, it was a visionary title. Unfortunately, like many other visionary titles, it didn't get near the credit it deserved.

The idea was really good, but there just wasn't anything special about the game.

A game like it will work much better next gen. Too bad they aren't around anymore.

firesoul, you are telling me that 256 player aint special?? MAG is an awesome game IF you have a good clan and they all use mics, otherwise not so good. Long Live PRO!!

I wonder if Zipper Interactive veterans will open a new studio and possibly work on that game someday?

I'm still upset Sony shut down SCE Studio Liverpool when they were already working on two PS4 games (new Wipeout and a Splinter Cell-esqe game). Really disappoints me. *sigh*

I miss the days of Socom 1 and 2. So many great memories with friends and doing clan battles. :(

Best game ever, hands down. Later iterations ruined by Zipper. I don't believe I'm being too harsh, but I do believe in paying for your mistakes.

So having them close down? Insensitive much?

MAG was by far my favorite FPS this generation and I would have loved to see MAG 2 on the PS4.

MAG was great. MAG was just overshadowed by Battlefield and CoD unfortunately. When you got into a clan, the game's quality increased tenfold. When I played for Raven, I changed about three major clans. All of them had top-class friendly people and were generally great. I'm really curious as to what Zipper could have done with the PS4 hardware and MAG. Maybe a cross-platform game between PS4 and PC? That would have been downright insane.

MAG was without a doubt one of the most ambitious projects this gen. And for those of us that played it we had a ton of fun.

I knew several of the developers really well and even they were mad at the treatment of MAG. They listened to the complainers instead of the actual fans, which crippled fan support for the game. Then they mislead the community into thinking clan battles were coming when the devs told us in confidence that "hey, don't get your hopes up, it isn't going to be what you think" and sure enough it wasn't. Then they simply threw it on the backburner to make Socom and Unit13 which was the nail in the coffin for them. It didn't help that Socom was released right at the time the network went down, which to me was the beginning of the end for them.

The only good thing is that I have talked with a couple of the devs that worked for Zipper and they have both moved on and hold no grudges with Sony either.

MAG is to date my favourite console shooter of all time. It was just so good, and didn't have all that auto aim assist, nonsense that plagues modern shooters. It was challenging and most of all incredibly fun.

Great to hear the devs you know are moving on alright - Zipper was one of my fave devs, and it was a right shame to see 'em close down.

Uhhh...? No, sorry. They had no idea what they were doing bringing that piece of poo poo Socom 4. They tried to make it into a CoD. It's a great game, just not a Socom game. I don't quite understand why someone would do that to their game. Turn it in to something it's not.

Huh? Zipper Interactive developed all the Socom games, except a couple PSP titles.

Socom Confrontation was made by Slant 6. Better Socom game than Zipper Interactive's Socom 4.

Too bad. Zipper made a good shooter for Vita in Unit 13 and I also enjoyed Socom with the right group of guys.

Side Note: I read a rumor about Metro Last Light coming to PS4 - hope that turns out to be true. I think I could wait for that version (hopefully be close to PC version)

Right shame to see this won't happen - I was a big fan of every Zipper game, they will go down in my book as one of the most under-rated developers. They set the standard with SOCOM 1 and 2 for online gaming that many games now don't match, in terms of lobby support and a bunch of other features. MAG was brilliant, but a little too brilliant for the critics, over many of whom's heads it went, and SOCOM 4, while branded poorly (it wasn't a SOCOM game), was an excellent piece of software. And Unit 13 is a great little shooter on the Vita.

It saddens me greatly that devs who produce excellent work ended up going out of business. I understand where Sony was coming from (they already had a key FPS in Killzone, and needed to cut costs pretty brutally), but it's still sad.

sad.
zippers a really talented creative studio!
and have so much history behind them.
oh well, this is what happens when you create a totally new IP and slap the name of a well known franchise onto it just for the sake of sales.
cough socom 4......
