Analyst: Early PS4 Reveal Didn't Change Anything For Microsoft

Few expected Sony to announce the PlayStation 4 when they did. It really surprised a lot of people, including analysts and various industry insiders.

Therefore, perhaps it was fair to assume that such an announcement put some extra pressure on Microsoft. Would it cause them to rush? Might they suddenly want to unveil their new Xbox before they had planned?

But they certainly haven't acted rushed. In fact, one Microsoft executive was quoted as saying he "doubted anyone even noticed" when the PS4 was revealed. And now, EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich disagrees with the idea that Microsoft has felt any pressure due to the PS4 unveiling. As he told NowGamer:

"It’s never too little too late for Microsoft. They are the incumbent. Microsoft operates at its own pace and I don’t think the PS4 announcement has fundamentally changed their next-generation strategy."

As for what we can expect when the new Xbox console is unveiled next month, Divnich said to anticipate some publishers we didn't see during Sony's PlayStation Meeting. For instance, conspicuously absent from the PS4 announcement party were publishers like Electronic Arts, and we heard nothing about Call of Duty, either, and the new entry is rumored to be another cross-generation title this year.

Divnich added:

"I’d imagine that Microsoft unveil will be a lead into E3, where they will provide greater detail on the console. It’s a solid strategy and it gives them some time to adjust their E3 presentation to reflect the sentiment coming out of the big unveil."

Oh, it's going to be pretty wild ride leading up to the launches of these two systems. One huge wacky roller-coaster.

I'm not so sure, they have reportedly dropped their plans for a games-less entertainment iteration of the box.

Even if it didn't change their plans I think it did have an effect on them: fear.

Agreed, it's like saying your chess opponent's move does not have any impact on your game plan.
They might be too late to change anything drastic, lest say on the hardware side, but they might be changing at least their strategy...

Probably adding a "share" button with a different name which they will say was there all along.

Totally agree. I imagine they flipped their &#%@ and went into ctrl+C mode when the PS4 announcement got so much positive buzz.

Lol funny you mention that World. The next Xbox is supposed to carry a similar strategy to the share function the ps4 has. If the rumors are true.

Sawao, do you know if that was in response to the PS4? Or had it supposedly always been planned as such? Assuming, of course, the rumors are true.

Sawao, do you know if that was in response to the PS4? I mean, was that rumored info "leaked" before or after the PS4 announcement.

Looking forward to seeing what MS counters with, but if they think putting a Roku inside the next xbox and turning it into a cable box that plays games then color me bored.

probably hasent, if anything its quite the opposite.
M$ was aparently suppose to announce the system late this month, but delayed it to next month so there able to show off a bit more things.
seems more likely that the ps4 announcement has made them sit back and say ok we need to have more info to reveal when we start talking.
instead of slightly opening the curtain only 1cm like $ony has.
M$ will actually show the console for instance.

They will have to, and totally blow a huge chance to milk it for as long as they can.

It was a card well played by Sony.

Well, M$ will take their turdbox, with their "always online or else" functionality, and their timed CoD dlc exclusivity. Then they'll uber-polish the turdbox (or tardbox?) with a megabucks marketing campaign like the World has never before seen, and the tards will queue up like zombies with vacant stares and pasted on smiles, begging M$ to take their daddy's and mommy's money.
Few months down the line, the turdbox sells by the honey bucket loads...

(End of prediction rant)

It's M$. In 2007 they weren't worried about this ridiculous thing without a physical keyboard called the "iPhone" either. Who would want that???

The only thing that would make me get an Xbox 8 or Infinity or whatever it'll be called, is if the machine is fully backwards compatible with 360 software and discs.

If the rumours are true, the x86 (or x84? Sorry, can't remember the exact number) architecture will make backwards compatiblity near impossible on next gen consoles.

Apart from that, it's PS4 all the way.

If the Next Xbox unveil on the 21st consists of more TV networks that only work for Gold subscribers, better Kinect functionality, a new cross gen Call of Duty, a super HD Halo sequel or paid celebrity endorsements, the PS4 will have little competition next gen.

That same exec is probably the one that said watch as the Zune changes the face of portable music players. I mean seriously what a childish remark from a supposed "exec", I expect those kinds of remarks from the customers.

And of course it affected their strategy....Sony tipped their hand first giving MS the chance to alter its strategy. This guy claims to be an analyst and yet denies the obvious.

It may not have changed much for micro&soft but for them to apparently completely "ignore" what Sony is doing would be completely foolish... As another poster pointed out, it would be like saying a chess opponents moves don't effect your game plan...

Just another reason for me to dislike micro&soft, damned arrogant bastards...

Hi everyone, I've been reading the occassional article here for about a year now. Even though I have a 360, I like the topics and perspectives covered here and sometimes I play my brother's PS3. I must say though, on every article about next gen consoles it's a little humorous seeing the unwavering platform dedication. Still, I enjoy seeing ideas from the other side of the fence.

For what it's worth, the determinant of my next gen console won't be so reliant on hardware, but rather the games to be released. Also, excuse the perhaps slightly over-zealous praise, but I much prefer the 360's social party feature over PS3's lack thereof and I hope something just like it will appear on next generation systems. I thought the PS4 launch game lineup video was pretty exciting, especially the Infamous one, but I suppose it depends on what Xbox has to offer. Gears of War was my favorite game from the Xbox (surprise surprise) but I don't think that will make it over to the next gen, seeing as they've milked the franchise for all it's worth already. Still, in the end, a game is a game; to each his own.

I have nothing but respect for you and your comment. You prefer social features and really enjoyed the 360 exclusives, so yeah I would be suprised if you didn't pick up the next Xbox.

Yeah fortunately and unfortunately you will see diehard Sony fans here, but being that it is a Sony centric site that should come as no suprise. I wish more Microsoft fans like you frequented sites like this because I believe we could have conversations rather than back and forth rants. Stick to your gut and buy what you like the most, not what others want you to buy.
