Cross-Gen Titles Ease The Pain Of No Backwards Compatibility

Sadly, the PlayStation 4 will not feature backwards compatibility (at least, not in the truest sense of the term; i.e., owners being able to put actual PS3/PS2/PS1 discs in the system).

That's annoying for many gamers, especially because this generation has lasted quite a long time and chances are, we all have pretty hefty backlogs. That really can't be helped and upcoming cross-generation titles won't alleviate that frustration.

However, given that we can anticipate so many blockbuster cross-gen games for this particular console transition, not having b/c doesn't seem quite as painful. It will also prompt more early adopters of the new platforms, because they have fewer reasons to hold on to their old systems. This year, it's very possible that the biggest games on tap will be available for both current- and next-gen platforms, and that should be viewed in a very positive light.

It has been confirmed that Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and now Call of Duty: Ghosts will release for the current batch of consoles, as well as the PS4 and new Xbox. Furthermore, many are already getting excited for pure next-gen titles like The Witcher 3: Big Hunt, Thief and inFamous: Second Son. More will undoubtedly be unveiled at E3. Combine that with the possibility that Battlefield 4 and Grand Theft Auto V might also end up being cross-gen games, and you've got a more agreeable situation in my mind. It makes for a less abrupt switch.

I don't really know of many PS3 or Xbox 360 games that I'm really going to want after the PS4 and Xbox 720 come out. Do you? Beyond: Two Souls is set for October 8, and that may indeed be the very last PS3 game I ever play. Beyond that, everything I want should be on the next-gen systems, and that makes the console transition a lot easier. Besides, as time goes on, backwards compatibility becomes less and less of a deciding factor. Me, I'm thinking about just having my PS4, PS3 and PS2 all hooked up so I can play any PlayStation game ever made whenever I want. ;)

The loss of true backwards compatibility definitely hurts, however I still have all the systems in which to play the respective games on. Plus being a collector of games and their systems I am not worried about shelf space like many others.

Gaikai is confirmed is it not? I can't remember...and so long as that is going to be apart of the PS4, it along with these cross-gen titles makes this almost a non-issue for me anymore.

The only thing I like from cross-generation games is the prospect of getting a better PC version than I ordinarily would. Personally, one of the last types of games I'd want on PS4 would be a game co-designed for 2 generations. On PS3 it would feel like the lesser version of the big brother and on PS4 it would feel like a constrained version of what it should be.
As for what game's are coming beyond Beyond? It's hard to say as of yet because most publishers aren't interested in announcing next years projects until this year's are nearly finished and out to market.
Gran Turismo 6 is probably the furthest one out I can see. I don't think that even has a firm date yet.

Speaking of cross generation gaming... I fully expect GT6 to be found on all of Sony's systems to advantage of the all the potential customers.

Akuma its a sexual reference. He acts all noble like a jedi when he roams the streets, and when he beds a lady he apparently uses hate, anger, fear and lightning to pleasure her.

Initially I was hoping for backward compatibility, but as time has gone by and new titles for the next gen has been known, I gotta say I really don't care much about b/c after all.

The only games I'd want to keep from my stack of PS3 games are the good ones I never got to finish. But I'd probably not have the time to return to them anyway.
So yeah, maybe it was smart of Sony to not bother with B/C after all. Let's look ahead instead!

GTA5 MUST be released for the PS4 too. It just have to happen. They probably just hold back the info about it to make the best sales possible on the PS3 version first.

But I will not buy GTA5 for the PS3. No sir, I am waiting.

If they don't make GTA V for PS4, are they going to wait another 2-4 years to get one on the next generation? No way, I agree it has to hit PS4

It doesn't because only few titles will release cross gens. Whenever I want to relive a Metal Gear game or the entire series I have to keep or buy a PS2, take it out and connect it to play MGS for PS1, MG, MG2, MGS2 and 3 for PS2 and disconnect and store when finished, and then same with PS3 for MGS4. It's ridiculous. At least release an add-on so I can have real BC on one console.

I think some gamers on these sites don't release how important BC can actually be, at least in the first years of a new console, and I think even more with how games are now or at least PlayStation games/exclusives. I'm definitely going to want to relive all the Metal Gear games, having to rebuy PS2 and PS3 is ridiculous. I'm also going to want to relive the Uncharted series, God of War, Infamous, LittleBigPlanet and a lot of PS1 and PS2 games.

Some people really just look for what's best for these companies instead of looking for their best benefits and others just look at their situation and don't look at the big picture.

I might not get a PS4 for a while because there is huge amount of PS3 games I haven't played yet and a lot of huge games that are PS3 exclusives and that are cross gen. I would love to play them in PS4 with the new and improved controller which was long over due and all the new features and I would get a PS4 early if I could play all my games.

Wow, the PS2 really spoiled the heck out of gamers, didn't it?

Are you aware that that remains basically the ONLY video game system in history that was 100% backwards compatible from start to finish? The Xbox 360 only does a small amount of software emulation for old Xbox titles (which doesn't even work that well) and the PS3 doesn't do it at all now.

When we were growing up, it was absurd to think that a Nintendo cartridge would play in the Super Nintendo, or that a SNES cartridge would play in the N64. In the 70s, 80s and 90s, nobody once entertained the possibility, and such was gaming life.

I never said cross-generational titles would help with a desire to play old classics; I said precisely the opposite in the article. But that's the way it has been EVERY generation for three decades, for the most part. On top of which, it's not "only a few" titles that will be cross-generational. It's essentially the biggest games on the horizon, which we absolutely have never seen before heading into a hardware transition.

Nobody is "looking at what's best for the companies." This is a purely logical assessment.

I appreciate your value for BC, but your run through of the Metal Gear series is flawed. Thanks to the wonderful 'Metal Gear Solid HD Collection' You can play the whole series on the PS3 alone:

MGS1 - PS1 Discs or off the Playstation Store
MGS2 - PS3:Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
MGS3 - PS3: Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
MGS4 - PS3
MGS: PEACE WALKER - PS3 : Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

The only game you missing is Portable Ops... which quite frankly is understandable if you have ever played it...

small pebble in the pond.
there may be some cross generation titles, but thats irrelevant for the thousands of titles that wont be playable on ps4.
exactly why $ony really needs to bet the farm on gaikai, that way they can have every single game ever released under the playstation brand available.
but thats assuming they can get the service working properly, and im not so sure they can.
one thing that worried me about that, gaikais CEO kept saying some day.
some day.
some day.
some day.
when $ony says some day, than dam you know its a long, long, LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way away!!!!!!

The problem is I wouldn't want to buy the compromised version of the game. it's clear a game like Watchdogs is developed for the PS4 in mind, so to buy it on the PS3 wouldn't seem right.

Then the problem if the PS3 version is pretty much identical it makes the new console look bad. I remember when the XBOX 360 was launched all it had were XBOX 1 ports like Gun, Call of Duty 2 & Tony Hawk's: American Wasteland. If there going to release a new console just do it. I hope Metal Gear Solid V remains a PS3 exclusive mind you as I don't want to have to buy a PS4 for a year or two at least.

It would be nice to have PS4 & PS3 cross buy games like with Ps3 & Vita. Too much to ask for I suppose.

Cross gen releases; yeah that's the spin/ticket....they'll buy that. Like the lemmings they think (in Sony/Microsoft's mind)/ "know" we are.
