Can Too Many Promo Vids Make You Lose Interest In A Game?

These days, few people even write text previews for video games anymore.

And the reason is simple. Well, there are two reasons: First, nobody reads (a sad and depressing fact) and secondly, there's usually a ton of gameplay information and media floating around. That goes double for highly anticipated games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Hey, I'm no anal retentive spoiler freak. I don't think seeing one video will totally ruin the experience for me and in fact, I tend to watch more trailers than I ignore. But at some point, don't you just start to say, "yeah, I'm tired of seeing it; I want to play it"? This is an interactive entertainment medium, so it stands to reason that such lamentations are common. Nobody wants to watch most of a game, especially when it's something like The Witcher 3, which is just begging for interaction.

And of course, other huge titles have gone through the same promotional blitz. I understand the idea behind such an approach, of course, but at some point, I say enough is enough. When we've reached that point, we don't need to see any more of the game. We're done. Just release it. Wouldn't you agree?

Of course people still read. The problem with most previews is that they are just based on a video clip that everyone can watch or have seen already.

Had previews been based on what they were based on back in the good old days, an actual hands-on preview by the journalist and thus potentially containing new information, it'd be an entirely different matter.
But a write-down of a video-clip on youtube... I mean... Come on. When was that interesting to begin with.

No, they don't. The minute you go over a certain word count online, everyone disappears. And that word count has dropped precipitously in recent years; there's a reason the digital mantra right now is "shorter and punchier."

No. Nobody reads. Especially online.

Well sure, but that's a different topic. Texts needs to be shorter online for a range of reasons.

But you claim that's why people don't write previews any more. And that is based on a wrong assumption of the unwillingness to read.

Write a "preview" well within that word count and people will *still* not read it if all it offer is a write-up of a publicly available video clip. Cause why read about someone else watching a video clip, when you can see that clip yourself? That really is the core of the problem here.

Publish a preview based on a real hands-on session, fill that preview article with news and information not everyone can see for themselves by watching a game-play video, and you'll see it being read, just like other articles that features something of interest.

I'm annoyed by the CoD Blops III adds plastered everywhere, especially my phone. A whole page ad takes over my screen and I have to try and finger pick that little x at the top right. Half the time I miss the x which causes me to be taken to some other site while my phone stalls for a second to load the page. Arghh

i guess for me it depends some times yes sometimes no but tbh it could get a bit boring but its like the old saying goes to much of any good thing isn't good and i'll leave it there
