Should Black Ops III Be Scared Of Star Wars: Battlefront?

Yes, I know. There's zero chance that Star Wars: Battlefront outsells Call of Duty: Black Ops III.

But that's not really the question. Years ago, EA said they just wanted to keep chipping away at the FPS monopoly Activision had generated with the massive blockbuster that is Call of Duty. EA knew no Battlefield would actually outsell any new CoD, but they were content with taking the slow road, with eating away at the lead.

According to the evidence, it appears they've done exactly that. Despite the resurgence that was Advanced Warfare last year, it's undeniable that the lackluster Ghosts entry caused CoD to take a step back. Now, Star Wars: Battlefront looks fresh and exciting, and everyone seems to be talking about it. The interesting part about this is that both titles were just recently revealed and it seems clear that Battlefront dominates the buzz at this point.

I know Activision hasn't kicked in the marketing blitz just yet and we still need to see gameplay and get more multiplayer details for Black Ops III. But all things considered, I get the feeling that more gamers are intrigued by Battlefront and despite what should be a valiant effort by Treyarch, many other gamers are just a little tired of the CoD franchise.

What do you think?

Battlefield Hardline didn't sell hard. But with the hype the movie has, I'm sure Battlefront will get some big numbers just by being a movie tie in.

Prebought both and will give both attention. Now if only Sony get of their asses and make me able to hide my online status so I don't get bombarded with COD invites everytime I log on.

I really can't wait for CoD to no longer be a thing. I loved the first 2 Modern Warfare games but enough already.

I feel the same way about social media. I loved Friendster and My Space in high school, but enough already. Millions of people enjoy it though, so you gotta let people like what they like and not hope what they like ends because you don't like it.

That's a really weird analogy, MK. It would really only work if I said I couldn't wait for videogames in general to no longer be a thing. The rampant milking of CoD and the influence its success has on games in general can be frustrating for people whose tastes don't stay static for a decade or more.

In the case of your analogy, it would be like Facebook coming out with a 'new' FB every year, that you had to sign up for all over again, starting from scratch, and everyone did that, so other companies just tried to create Facebook clones instead of trying something different like Twitter or Tumblr.

I was merely trying to say you shouldn't wish something that millions of people enjoy to go away simply because you don't like it. Unless you want everyone to be like you. It was just meant to be an example of something I don't like, but don't go out of my way to rip down others for.

I think it still works anyway. The comparison to what you said would be the whole internet not being a thing anymore. Social media is a very popular internet activity, but not even close to the whole internet. Comparable to CoD and the rest of gaming.

I agree that CoD has had a negative influence on other games, especially FPSs. But I believe that to be the fault of pubs and devs trying to copy it and not CoD itself. You can't blame shoddy copies of something on the original. That's entirely the fault of the forgers. By the way Facebook started as a clone of My Space, that started as a clone of Friendster, that started as a clone of a real social life.

As for it being static, in many cases that's true, but a lot of people like the way it feels and you don't want to fix what's not broken. At this point I look at CoD kinda like a sports title. I already really like it, just make some tweaks, fix some balancing issues, and give me new rosters, or in this case, new weapons and maps.

I'm not ripping on anyone for liking CoD. It's perfectly natural for people to want more of what they like in entertainment and less of what they don't like, especially when something they don't like has become so ubiquitous and pervasive that it is (in their opinion) negatively affecting other things.

If I was hating on all videogames, you might have a point, but I'm not. I dig videogames, that's why I'm here just like everyone else. If I didn't like videogames, I'd never play them and then it wouldn't matter to me who liked what, because it wouldn't affect me. That's how it is for you and social media. I don't like horror movies so it doesn't bug me that Twilight turned one of the scariest types of monsters ever into one long All American Rejects music video. That kind of hate, just giving people shit for liking something different, I could understand taking umbrage with.

I DO like games, including shooters, though, so CoD's continued milking and lack of innovation does bug me, and I see nothing wrong with saying so. Sorry.

If you don't like it stay away from it, why is that so hard?

Zero chance? I think you are really underestimating the Star Wars fans out there. I don't know if it will outsell black ops but I would not say it has no chance.

No.

They will both likely sell well within their expected margins. It's not like many people only be able to choose one game this year.

Normally I would agree that it has absolutely no chance but I think with the new Star Wars movie coming out it has a small chance (like 1%) but still a chance. But it will almost certainly do very well.

I don't think so.

I still play CoD a lot and the consensus I pick up talking to people is not a lot of them are getting SW, but almost all say they're getting BOIII. I think both games have different audiences really. I'm definitely getting both, but I know a lot of people getting one and not the other.

The only thing cod has to be scared of is that for every older or even late teen that abandons the game, 5 prepubescent children with headsets pop up and keep said older gamer away, but money talks unlike those parents to these children about half the profanity and racial slurs even i did not know existed before encountering some of these hooligans online

One thing I have noticed over the past 2 years is that no game has to be afraid of another game. There hasn't been one single instance of one game franchises release hurting another game franchises release.

It's not like movies. People will typically only go see one movie every now and then, because it's so damn expensive and inconvenient. Games are completely different.

The only thing that a game franchise has to fear is itself. That seems to be the one thing killing franchises.

The majority of sales would be from COD fans, and COD fans will always be COD fans.

I will probably play BLOPS3, since BLOPS2 was one of my favorite COD games. But I ain't hyped for it. Haven't even finished Advanced Warfare yet.
