Could You Have Predicted MGSV After Playing The Original?

Yeah, I know. There's really no way to predict the future.

But when we were younger, we always liked to theorize about the future of the video game industry. There was a time when all of us were convinced that nothing could get better than Super Mario Bros. on the NES. After all, we were coming off Atari and Colecovision, so SMB was like...wow.

If we're being honest with ourselves, there were probably many times when we said, "it can't get much better than this, can it?" But obviously, technology won't be stopped and here we sit in a new virtual world. Therefore, it's always fun to look back and try to remember: What were we predicting in terms of franchise futures? Could we have predicted where Final Fantasy would end up? Probably not. What about Metal Gear Solid? Could we have predicted how MGSV would look over 17 years after the original blew us all away?

And when I ask this, I'm not talking about the technical side, per se. There's also the gameplay style to think about. The original MGS was a top-down pure stealth adventure and if you forget, MGS2 was completely different. Perhaps we could better see the future after Sons of Liberty on PS2 in 2001...? And here's another question: Is MGSV indicative of the direction fans of the original wanted to see?

It's worth asking, at any rate.

All I can say is that Peace Walker made me just a little worried for Phantom Pain. Since when do I have to grind missions to level up my base enough to get the gear I need to get passed a boss section? I don't want to grind to get stuff in a MGS game. That's blasphemy.

That made me quit really.
(sure. the fact that it's levels felt like a pre-ps2 game and it didn't help without the awesome MGS-grade cinematics also contributed to quiting)

off topic but did you build your pc or buy pre built?

My current PC is pre-built with builder parts.

Years ago I would asymble my own. there's a warning there though, be certain your RAM and mb/chipset are compatible. And I don't mean in the general sense. I've ran into headaches with latency timings on supposedly compatible ram. This would cause strange unpredictable behavior. This was with an AMD nforce2 board. Which was a while ago.

On my last PC I turned to Ibuypower on recommendation from a friend.
They're a company who uses builder parts to construct your machine. Their customizations are excellent. I got to custom pick pretty much everything for it. Their markup was also modest. I calculated only 10 or so percent markup compared to me just buying all my parts myself from newegg.
Their only down side, at the time, was that it can take about a month for your machine to be built and arrive at your home. I'm sure that varies on how exotic your build is.

I love that I can look at my beloved fighting games and think they're faithful and true even now to their roots.

yea and racing is still racing. mortal kombat and street fighter have come a long way but are pretty much the same games which is cool.

what if we could have had the user generated level sharing of excite bike like we have now with lbp? or the same concept with mario brothers? little mario bros anyone?

i think we were VERY limited in our views of what video games could and would be in the future

When i first completed MGS1 i knew there would be a sequel and i pretty much bought the PS2 for that very reason. When they showed off the tanker demo of MGS2 at E3 my eyes nearly rolled out of their sockets, there was nothing else at the time that even came close to how good MGS2 looked and played in that demo. It looked that good to me i honestly thought it would end after MGS2.

But i was well and truly wrong, and I'm glad because otherwise we would have never seen MGS3 Snake Eater which imo is still the best MGS to date.

I've only ever played MGS4, but this reminded me of when I first got a gaming console (ps2) I was playing NHL 2002 and I can actually remember thinking WOW this looks so realistic. I just went back and looked at some screenshots and WOW it's amazing to see how far gaming has come graphically.

Does anyone know how long before games are expected to achieve photorealism? Because it seems like they're almost there.

Certainly not from the story side of the series. The open world aspect was hinted at all the way back to MGS1. I'm not saying I saw Phantom Pain in even the slightest sense, but it kind of makes sense being able to look back now.
