Wolfenstein: The New Order Announced

It's long past time we got a decent Wolfenstein. ...hey, that rhymes, doesn't it?

Today, Bethesda Softworks, a ZeniMax Media company, has announced Wolfenstein: The New Order, a new shooter scheduled to release in Q4 2013. In development at MachineGames, the title seeks to offer players "a gripping and dramatic experience," and the debut announcement trailer has premiered at GameSpot.

If you're not familiar with MachineGames, the studio is apparently comprised of "seasoned developers known for creating compelling, critically-acclaimed story-driven games." The New Order is a re-imagining of the franchise that started it all; if you've forgotten, the original Wolfenstein is credited as being the very first FPS. It didn't even have a Y-axis at the time but hey, it was pretty special. Now, this reboot - if that is indeed what it is - seeks to reclaim lost glory. Said MachineGames creative director Jens Matthies:

"We are excited to bring a new chapter of Wolfenstein to gamers everywhere. As fans of the series, working on this game is an honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure experience that will make FPS fans proud."

The last Wolfenstein didn't turn out too well, but I distinctly recall loving Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the Xbox. That game was great. And yes, if you're wondering, the new title is slated for both current and next-gen consoles as well as PC.

Oh great more Zombie Nazis......

In all seriousness might be cool for a trip down memory lane if they include the original with it, sos we can play again.

you can, they released the original on PSN when the last one released.

Ya can't get enough of those as far as I'm concerned, that is if they even use zombies which is unlikely.

I thought they were onto something with their ideas but that game lost its fun half way through, I sold it. It was poorly realized.

hahahahaha.

I went and read the PSX review for the last Wolfenstein.

In the comments section there is a few people that are still around, yourself and World included. The funny part is, you posted 2 comments on that article totally bashing the crap out of the review, saying how much of an awesome game it was.

Good to see your opinion hasn't changed in the 4 years since then.

poorly done is a excellent way to describe it.
one thing i HATE about journalist this gen they fail to acknowledge that.
wolfenstein, alpha protocol, just cause 2, mercenaries 2, mafia 2, perfect examples of games that had unique cool fresh ideas which were allot of fun, but were really poorly implemented.
so reviewers just slanted them on that, they dont care that at least developers tried to do something different!
churn out yesterday, and the day before, and the day before, and the day before, shooter, 9/10!
actually try to do something different and unique 5/10!
sigh.
dont care what was done, just how well it was done.

always said raven software is one of the best developers out there!
such a crime they are owned by antivision.......
speaking of raven, wonder what there working on now?
hope its a new singularity, pop that as a launch title for the ps4 that would be SWEET!
one of the VERY few shooters that actually managed to have a decent story line!

Have you checked out the trailer?

Looks like the Nazis have mechs now.

Definitely looks like a different take on it, I am very interested now.

Yay! I guess this has nothing to do with id? Wasn't that Chris Carmichael's first big project? I still need to play through the easter egg level on Rage. I sure hope this turns out to be awesome ! Also, it would be blasphemy if this didn't get a PC version.

I know they are primarily a publisher now, but I wonder if their influence over the development of the game could make for a lazy PS3 version.

I want a modern take on it.

or like a steam-punk Dishonored style world.

Either way, hopefully it will be awesome. The previous wolfensteins weren't all that bad. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was heaps awesome!

ahhhhh wolfenstein!
nice to see the series back!
makes me wonder though what it would be like, how it would be different if id were working on it.
sad, i wish zenimax would expand that studio 10 fold theres just so many awesome franchises they own that NEED sequels!
we need a rage 2, we NEED doom 4, we need quake 5.
but sadly we probably wont see doom 4 for at least another year, and the rest well at this rate for another 5!
