Source: PS4 Won't Be Digital-Only, Will Launch Next Year

As time goes on, we're bound to hear more rumors concerning the next PlayStation console.

The latest may come from viable and legitimate sources, though, as the Wall Street Journal reports.

First up is the apparent fact that Sony considered a purely downloadable machine, one that would completely eliminate physical media. But the company decided against this idea, as they were forced to question "the prevalence and reliability of Internet connections around the world." Secondly, sources "familiar with the matter" have said that Sony is currently aiming for a 2013 launch, although they didn't go into specifics. Analysts have said we shouldn't expect the PS4 to arrive until at least 2013, so perhaps Sony is going for a holiday release next year.

As always, anything with "unnamed sources" must be considered rumor, and we probably won't hear anything about the PS4 at this year's E3. But hey, we can be patient, right?

I don't mind them announcing the PS4 but they sure ass hell had better have some kick-ass games to go with it. I don't have a problem with them getting to the party early this time around.

Maybe you can tell why the hell they canceled the best show on TV in the past 30 years?!!!!!!! I am still pissed at Fox for canceling Firefly. I still watch the episodes a few times a year and have seen Serenity over 20 times. I hate Fox and all those pussies that didn't buy the rights to Firefly from Fox!!!!

I haven't been watching a lot of American television when Firefly was still on, but the show kept getting mentioned by sci-fi fans. I'm probably gonna check it out in a few weeks and I'm looking forward to seeing it. But doing that might also mean I'd get disappointed that it did not get a second season. Ahh well, at least Fox had the guts to renew my current fave TV show (Fringe) for a final season despite its abysmal ratings.

It doesn't help that Fox played the series out of order, the very first episode wasn't even shown first, and they kept changing the time slot for it. It had really low ratings as well unfortunately, due in part to the issues listed above. Fans knew it wasn't getting the ratings that's why they campaigned for another network to pick it up, which did happen. But ratings still stayed to low for the series to continue. Even the movie was a flop in theaters, bringing in less than it's budget. Unfortunate, but it lives in cult status now and how flourished very nicely because of it. The pen & paper RPG was decent, and still waiting for the MMO to be finished.

Thanks for the info, it's so sad. I really enjoyed everything about it. Nathan Fillion was amazing! Would love to see him in an Uncharted movie if that ever happens.

Sci-fi still runs marathons.... they should have bought the rights. Fits right in with their stuff. But I only think if they did do it now alot of the characters would change.




Also I get that Fillion is a good actor and kinda a cult hero.... but Nathan Drake ? Doesnt sound like him and when I see Drake/Fillion to me I dont see the same guy.

Firefly unfortunately is done... Forever. It was such a good show. I just starte watching it last year on Netflix and I'm not sure why Fox cancelled it. In fact I'm not sure why people go to Fox at all. Fox cancels everything.

Even now if they tried to bring it back it would be completely different and there would be... Well watch the shows and watch the movie - Serenity - and for those that don't know, will know, it wouldn't work after all that.

They're too busy giving us wrestling, ghost hunter shows, and crappy "movies" to be bothered with buying the rights of good shows and working with them.

I know exactly what you mean CrusaderForever, f**** awesum show what was FOX thinking. But we all know that most good shows get canceled at least once.

Plus its to be expected from FOX. I really do think that that network is run by chimps. Theyve canceled all their good shows: Family Guy (twice), Futurama (twice), Firefly, now they are even threatening to cancel Simpsons (though theyve been dicks to the Simpsons crew for years already).

Pretty sure there's a few others slipping my mind, but yeah FOX is the most contradictory network ever theyve got such great shows yet they got out of their way to bury the shows in the ground.

I am ready for the PS4 at any time. This holiday season would be fine with me. It doesn't mean they are going to stop supporting the PS3. They cannot and I must stress, they cannot be late to the party this time. Nintendo, who cares about Nintendo, just don't over look Microsoft. Nintendo has the child and casual market cornered. It's the hardcore gamer that is the true prize and Sony knows this.

so they will stop supporting ps3 with core games?because ps3 launched in 2006 ,they wrapped up the biggest games for ps2 in 2005 except for gow2 and japanese games which hadn't been localized yet like yakuza 2 in 2008.

I will get the PS4 no matter what, but I think that the PS3 is far from done. The PS3 already omits 1080 graphics. Anything more than that would be useless due to the fact that the eye wont notice it. Plus, think of all the money people have invested through the PSN store and all else that involves the PS3 itself. I'm sure Sony could add anything they want, with respect to software, functionality, and compatibility of anything just through a software update. Plus, keep in mind the type of media that the PS3 utilizes (blu-ray). There is nothing a step above that and there won't be for a while because it is too new. You know that software will look the same no matter what next gen device it is on too.

Good to know Blu-rays will still get some love next gen!

With the problems I've had recently with Steam not working or digital games not working cos of no internet connection for a few days, I'm a physical brick and mortar gamer through and through!!

Once I find it cheap enough, I'll be buying the disc version of Diablo III.

With all these rumours flying around, a PS4 teaser is becoming more and more likely at either E3 or TGS later this year.

The day everything goes digital is the day I quit playing games. Well maybe not completely but, there has been times throughout having my PS3 I was without Internet, for numerous reasons. It's safe to assume that would happen again at any time so...

Plus I like my physical media, and well honestly Blu-ray was a big investment and it paid off. Why bail on it after such a strong showing?

Regardless this is good news! Can't wait!

If indeed the PS4 is planned for release in 2013 (yippee!) then surely they must reveal that at this years E3 and not wait until just a few months before launch?

If true, this is definitely good news, solid copies are still essential for a consoles survival, take the PSP Go for instance...

As for it being released next year, I could definitely get used to the idea, depending on what new features it brings and of course; the price...

I don't want them to rush it but I do want them to beat microsoft to the start line this time.

I don't really give a lot of the rumors much merit. Until things are official on the console specs and release dates it's just speculation.

The main thing I care about it is the PS4 being a developer friendly system so I can kiss inferior multiplats goodbye forever. They sure do leave a a bad taste in your mouth if you have ever had a bad experience. cough- Fallout3-cough Bethesda can kiss my...forget it. This is a mature site.

To be fair that's not on the PS3. You can call it un-friendly or whatever, but the best developers out there constantly praise it and consistently push it. Ive been fine with Bethesda games, except for the Fallout 3 expansions, I couldn't even finish them. But if there is an inferior game, that's on the developer. They need to spend more time with it and it's obvious they don't when patches for Kinect use come out for games like Skyrim. So where do you think their resources are going? Not to the PS3.

I know at the beginning developers struggled, but Sony offered assistance. And honestly if a developer considers themselves great, they better figure it out, regardless of excuses because there are others out there -ND, Guerilla, Rockstar, irrational games, among others - that constantly are pushing the console.
