PS4 Price Drop Likely To Arrive With The Next Big Exclusive

Everyone is wondering when Sony might drop the price of the PlayStation 4.

Well, they have every right to wonder.

The system just lost out to Xbox One in North America in the month of April, and it remains $50 more expensive than Microsoft's machine. On top of which, the lack of top-tier exclusive software is definitely hurting the console's immediate growth potential. Bloodborne was great but it really only appeals to a niche hardcore crowd; it's unlikely that the game will boost PS4 sales through the roof. If you wanted Bloodborne, chances are, you already had the system.

That's why I think we can expect a price drop whenever the next big exclusive drops. Maybe we have to wait until Uncharted 4: A Thief's End but I get the feeling we'll hear about a permanent $50 price cut for the holidays. That's when Sony might launch a new God of War or Gran Turismo (watch E3) and if that happens, it makes perfect sense to see an official price drop for the only console that can play the game. And given Xbox One's lineup (Halo 5: Guardians, Forza Motorsport 6 and Rise of the Tomb Raider), Sony might not have a choice.

Yes, PS4 is in the lead right now. But it can't maintain that lead on nothing more than general word-of-mouth and future promises. That act is already starting to wear thin.

In Canada, the PS4 is currently $100 more expensive than XBOne.

Good ol' Canadian dollar. Price of games rises when it's weak, but doesn't drop when it's strong.

It does drop when it gets past a certain threshold, actually. I thought the same thing once. I think it was Xenris that pointed out to me the history of game prices in Canada.

This time, though, it's because the American dollar is recovering. The Canadian dollar is strengthening as well internationally. It's just that the American one is getting back to normal. Aside from game prices, though, it's better for Canada's economy for the American dollar to be stronger. Because then they give us all their manufacturing business.

I do seem to recall, back in the 2007, when the Canadian dollar was at par, and became worth more than the US dollar, Sony had to drop the price of games from $70 down to $60. This was also when I got my 60 GB PS3.

I'm hoping the plus reqirement to play online will be dropped. I know, it's a snowballs chance in hell it will happen, but I'm hoping still.

I do not think Gran Turismo 7 will have an appearance at E3 this year.

The sales on GT6 did not match what was anticipated and it seems to have had an impact on the way PDI does things. The genre is way to competitive nowadays.

As a result, I fully expect PDI to revolutionize the genre when GT7 is released.
