If The New Xbox Was Cheaper Than PS4, Would You Consider It?

At this point, everyone seems to love the PlayStation 4. But there are two things to consider:

Firstly, the new Xbox hasn't even been unveiled yet. After Microsoft officially announces their new system next week, you might start seeing a lot of very positive headlines, and that will result in some tough decisions for gamers come fall. Secondly, as always, price is an issue.

Sony has made it clear that they don't want to be exclusionary this time around. They wanted to give developers an accessible yet powerful console, they opted for affordable PC components, and they've said the price of the PS4 will be quite reasonable. Perhaps there will be two models, one priced at $400 and the other priced at $500. That's just a guess but it seems perfectly plausible, and it's also quite plausible that the new Xbox will have an identical price tag.

But what if it doesn't? What if Microsoft goes even further? What if they produce at least one version of their new system that comes in well below the PS4? Would that entice you to pick up the Xbox 720? Thing is, money is tight for many, and not everyone can afford to buy a next-gen system this year. They definitely can't afford to purchase both. And if it comes down to price, if a gamer says, "Okay, I can only afford one, and it has to be the cheapest one available," does that not give Microsoft the edge...?

hell no, they loved to make exclusive accessories like memory cards and any external drive was limited to 16GB last I check along with limited support for 3rd party devices, I loved having the options my ps3 had with blutooth sync, flash drives and hdd's big as I like
MS will have to make some insane exclusive attempts to get me, as most I'll own both

If the Kinect is bundled along I don't see how it could. And seeing that Xbox LIVE is $60 a year it's hard to really come in cheaper.

I'm curious about MS's in house launch line up and how it'll stack up to PS4's.
It may be that Sony has KZ, Infamous, Drive Club and Knack as their early lineup, and other than that third-party ports of this-gen games. Really things are closing in fast, we're ETA in about 6 months.
Let's hope there's playable demos at the least for e3.

They will probably do that subscription plus cheap console deal to screw people. So no I won't fall for that. Plus you have to figure the hardware is going to be questionable, more people than I had thought are going to hold the RROD against MS this time.

Either way, I'm looking forward to the unveiling just as a gaming enthusiast I find it a curiosity to watch MS drive themselves into the ground in every single endeavor they have lately.

It's pretty much the same model as a cellphone. Subsidized hardware in exchange for a contract. I'd just as soon bite the bullet and pay upfront but I can see how that might appeal to some. They did the same thing with the 360 and it wound up being about $40 more expensive overall. Not the best way to get a piece of hardware, but at least you're aware of what's going on from the beginning.

No. Because I will not fall for MS BS. What many people didn't realize is that the PS3 was more of a one time investment in its early days. But if you bought a 360 and then bought all the accessories to make it comparable hardware wise then the 360 would cost more.

The $500 20 gig PS3 was the absolute worst investment anyone on this Earth could have made. No HDMI cord, no headset, no rumble in the controller(it was a last gen feature no one wanted, right?), and disc space that would soon become obsolete unless you wanted to continually uninstalling and reinstalling game data. It's definitely better now, but early on it wasn't worth it.

KidPresentable, the heck are you talking about? It was by far the best & cheapest blu-ray player at the time (still is), Full PS2 backwards compatibility, 4 USB ports, HDMI, fully upgradable HD, and last but not least the best-looking PS3 model to date. What's not to like?? One of the best investments I ever made.

No HDMI cord? really, a $2 item.
No headset? Couldn't care less.
No rumble? buy extra controller, "problem" solved.

Microsoft lost me as customer when it comes to video game console indefinitely.

The ONLY way I would ever make the switch to an XBOX is if Gran Turismo went there exclusively, and since we know that is never going to happen... yeah, you get my point.

I would get it if the 720/Infinity is less or equal to the price of the PS4 on two conditions:

1) The transition from the 360 is smooth. I can transfer all my game saves, Gamertag w/ friends list, XBLA games and it's nearly 100% backwards compatible.

2) The launch games are of great quality. If Ryse is controller based, I think that will be enough.

I'll eventually own all 3 systems but I'd like to maximize the amount of games I get so it's a WiiU and PS4/720 combo is how I'm going until holiday 2014.

It would be like shopping at Walmart for 10+ years, why try a different store if Walmart hasnt done anything to make you WANT to seek someone else?

Or having the same guy fix your car for the last 10+ years... would you suddenly let the new guy who opened up shop next door that you know nothing about work on your car when you already have someone you know and trust doing it?

Real gamers are able to save what it takes to buy the console they want. It's unrealistic to think that MS would release a console with roughly the same performance at a much lower price.

A casual gamer, or parents that don't game themselves, might be tempted to go straight for price. But then there's the WiiU who got that area covered, I guess...

could reverse the question and ask if it was significantly more expensive the answer would still be the same.
but no one can answer that question, because no one knows what it will offer.
that said though i cant see the xbox being the same price, especially if the rumors of the controller being the same as the 360s, theres only DDR3 RAM so, so, SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much cheaper than GDDR5.
not to mention the ps4s controller has a lightbar and touchpad in it thus rising expenses.
only thing that could cause the xbox to reach the price of the ps4 is if its bundled with kinect, but then 50 bucks says the ps4 will be bundled with their camera as well so your back to square one.
ill be surprised if the next xbox is not cheaper!
plus, $onys pretty good at ripping their customers off!
look at their TV and laptop range, at least a good 300+ bucks more than the competition spec for spec.
sometimes even worse, a friend of mine bought a samsung series 9 TV, one whole range above my TV, and it cost him 200 bucks LESS!
WTF!?
better TVs cost LESS money!?
oh right its a bravia....... that explains it!
$onys worse than toshiba!

I care about games more than the system that they're running on. There are at least two PS4 titles right now that I'm pumped for (Watch Dogs and Infamous) and nothing that I've seen from Microsoft has really roused much enthusiasm from me.
XBL works as a service and it would be hard to leave my achievements and friends behind, but Microsoft burned a lot of goodwill with me when they didn't smack down Adam Orth harder. They could very well lose me forever as a customer and they'll just have to #dealwithit! At this point, price wouldn't make a huge difference.

No. MS got into the game for one reason only: Destroy Sony. They had no love for the gamer. Just money and power. They saw Sony doing really well in that corner of the technology world and set out to beat them. No different than any competitor, really, but MS always goes that little extra bit further and that is what turns me off to them. That jealous, disgusting monopolizing company will never get my gaming dollar.

Gears of War & Halo - there's the 2 reasons to buy an Xbox as your secondary machine.

Also - media streaming is better as I prefer the windows media centre interface.

But the PS4 will always have gaming superiority over Xbox - way too many annoying kid's and teenagers on Xbox live which is why so many of us play COD on PlayStation instead

If illumiroom is indeed a feature, it would then have to;
- not require Always On connection
- support used games
- have a price drop after first couple years
- not force the Kinect down my throat

Then I'd consider one. Until then, I'll stay with PlayStation and PC gaming.

Either system would have to be substantially less than the other for price to be the deciding, or much of any, factor. If the next Xbox was like HALF the cost of PS4, sure, it might go with that one first (I'm buying both eventually regardless, so I'm not too worried about jumping on board one and not the other at the outset of the next generation.) But I expect they'll be very close, so nope, could care less if one is, say, $50 less than the other, I'll go with the one with the best games, serves, infrastructure, prospects for the future, etc. And with the big caveat that we really don't know what the next XBox is going to be at ALL at this point (until next week, anyway) Sony has done a very nice job convincing this potential customer PS4 is going to be a great buy right out of the gate with an excellent future ahead of it for years.

Looking at what the PS3 and X360 launched with, their capabilities, was the 360 ACTUALLY cheaper? A coworker bought a 360 about the same time I bought my PS3, after all the add-ons he had to buy to make it as capable as the PS3(ok, he didn't HAVE to buy them but come on....) he ended up spending almost $150 more expencive, and that wasn't even getting a game w/ it. I wonder what proprietary add-ons you'll have to buy to make the 720 fully functional.

Anyways, I dispise micro&soft so much I will never buy more than I absolutely have to(mainly their OS and Word/Office programs due to work and support for other programs) so their next XBox and all future ones are out of the question.
