Has Any Game Felt "Next-Gen" To You?

Yes, it depends on your own personal definition of "next-gen."

But it goes without saying that most gamers haven't been blown away by this generation's software offerings to date and in fact, many will say they still haven't seen anything they'd consider "next-gen."

Well, maybe there's just no pleasing people. One could argue that From Software's excellent Bloodborne is a perfect example of next-gen gen greatness. Or, you could make the claim that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is, despite its technical shortcomings, the most ambitious and most impressive title of the generation thus far. Both games certainly couldn't have been produced on last-gen consoles, that's for sure.

But maybe you saw a title before either of these and you said to yourself, "now that's what I call 'next-gen.'" If so, what was it? And if you haven't seen such a game yet, which will be the first to blow you off your chair? Waiting on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End or something like that?

Infamous SS was my first.

There's just no way the PS3 could've done something of it's immense city scape scale and visual detail. This is made even more apparant when compared to the first year of PS3 games. Pop in the first Infamous on PS3 and just look at how muddy and unimpressive it looks by way of comparison to Second Son (a first year PS4 game).

game design wise, perhaps (that's something more power just can't buy). but in terms of technical prowess there's just no contest.

So far Witcher is the closest because it spreads great graphics across a huge world without compromising. Previous to this game, big open world RPGs had to sacrifice a lot just to get that big world and big worlds reached their limits.

While we still need gameplay improvements, so far Witcher does the most in one game that's newly possible.

While I think Witcher 3 looks good there were compromises to it's graphics quality because of it's big world.
This was at the heart of the big upset of the VGX trailer. Initially the game was using rendering technology similar to that of the next Uncharted game. They had to ditch that because of it's scale (so they say). You'll also notice, games like the next Uncharted and even AC Black Flag use heavy amounts of 3D modeled vegetation.
Sadly, Witcher 3 uses tons of cardboard (last gen) vegetation. It animates in the wind nicely though so the trade off was likely worth it. I just wish Witcher 3 looked better in more of it's indoor lighting conditions. It doesn't look bad, but I'm not impressed by them.

and I don't mean to say the cardboard implementation looks bad. It looks really impressive actually, especially in motion against the atmospheric effects. It's just the means of producing the vegetation is done with positioned and layered rectangles/planes with opacity maps of leaves and stuff applied to them (hence why the leaves themselves or even like flowers look paper flat). With the game being from the third person it really masks the fact that it's using this approach.

It's just sorta cool with some games these days trying to implement actual modeled vegetation. Complete with modeled individual leaves.

EDIT:
But my biggest pet peeve. Bending armor. Sorry but every time I see steel armor plates or anything really solid and sturdy BENDING with the body I just cringe.

I still say it didn't make anywhere near the kind of compromises we see in PS3 RPGs. The dialogue, cut scenes, NPC states, quest variety, and lack of pop-in is a lot.

Even a conversation with a talkative NPC is an interaction with a character and not a standing drone whose appearance and voice has been repeated many times over.

Bending armor is ugly, I haven't seen any yet except with my first outfit but that was tight chainmail.

Wait, so WEWM loves pointing out how games don't feel next gen to him. Meanwhile, witcher 3 has bendable armor? You serious dude?

The Order 1886 visuals (obviously) and execution of narrative, Bloodborne for its fantastic design and gameplay mechanics, and most definitely Witcher 3 for its world and excellently crafted side quests, despite technical issues. This generation is going well indeed...anyone who says differently is just incapable of being satisfied.

Killzone Shadowfall, Infamous second son, Bloodborne, and The Order 1886.

The order is easily the most detailed of the bunch while killzone pays attention to the little things like different sounds the bullet casing makes dependent on where you are. Bloodborne for its gameplay and infamous for all of the above.

It's fun. Lacks content and the graphics could be better but it's fun and original. The lack of content will get better though. Nintendo is pretty good at free content updates and downloads this gen.

Techically speaking - everything that came out so far and it's not PS3 or other remaster, qualifies for this CURRENT-GEN.

I think the massive leap that was the ps2-ps3 transition had everyone's hope far too high. There just wasn't/isn't going to be that big a leap from ps3-ps4.

It's not just that generation, I think. Before that, the jump from 5th to 6th gen was also pretty amazing, suddenly characters in game no longer looked like weird, animated origami. And the generation jump before that moved us from mainly using 2D to 3D graphics, that must've seemed insanely awesome at the time. If anything, every jump since that one was less impressive then the last. I agree with your general point though, people keep expecting the amazing changes from before and there just isn't going to be one like that unless there's a new big technological breakthrough.

The ps2-ps3 jump is the first one I experienced as an avid gamer so that's why I mentioned it but ya the previous ones would have been a giant leap too. This one is all about small details.

i think the witcher 3 and bloodebourne were both right up there and maybe infamous it was bad either tbh but im sure we're gunna think other games are more and more "next-gen" as we go as is usually the trend with consoles as it has always been

happy gaming
