Yamauchi On Gran Turismo 6: "We Have A PS4 Version In Mind"

Yesterday, it was announced that Gran Turismo 6 would be launching on the PS3.

The press release didn't mention the PlayStation 4 and that was a big question on many a gamer's lips: Is the latest entry in the award-winning racing simulator franchise going to hit Sony's new console? Pretty please?

Well, maybe. Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi told GameSpot that his team "has a PS4 version in mind for the future." However, it seems clear that if a PS4 version does arrive, it would be at a later date, as the designers are focusing on the PS3 for the time being. Said Yamauchi:

"...for this holiday season we thought that it would be best for users to release the PS3 version. I thought the best scenario would be for the game to come out, and we're planning to have new content, and DLC every few months.

Once the players have thoroughly played out the game, if the PlayStation 4 version just came out naturally in the process, we think that would be the best scenario for the game."

The Polyphony boss did say that player progress from the PS3 version would "probably" carry over into the PS4 version, which sounds like a darn good idea. Lastly, Sony revealed that GT6 would receive a demo in July, which is pretty early, considering that the launch date isn't until some time this holiday season. We just can't wait!

I hope they go through with it. Just think of how beautiful it will look, how smooth the gameplay will be and how realistic it will be...to the point you feel like you're literally in the car.

...I think I just came.

Aha, a special PS4 version somewhere down the line with extra content and better graphics makes sense as a way to squeeze customers out of some extra cashola before making a true next gen game out of it.

I read somewhere that GT6 is using 'adaptive tesselation' during replays. This allows for smoother meshes. Basically cars that have far less noticeable edges. Whoopie doo! What does that have to do for PS4?

A lot actually.

This suggests to me PD was smart and created their car meshes in quads. Basically every polygon face is bound by 4 vertices. This makes subdivision, like tesselation, a breeze getting nice results fast. It's a very effective way to increase polygon count quickly. This means PD won't have to remodel every freaking car for the next-next GT. Instead they can use the premium models from PS3 and apply the subdivision algorithm and get impressive results. I really don't think an upgraded GT for PS4 is as far away as it could seem.

Thanks man. Here's an example of the female I'm modeling in quads. I put together real quick.
Just with a click or two I massively increased the poly count.

That's pretty cool! :D Looks good so far even though you said you put it together quickly. I can't wait to see when it is finished.

I'll buy a second copy of GT6 if it makes it to PS4, if Polyphony waits to do GT7 on PS4, I'll manage to find the will to live somehow.

whats the point?
no one is going to spend the premium on a new ps4, and the higher price of a ps4 game, just so they can replay the game they have played for 100s of hours already!
either make GT6 a launch window title, ie within 3 months of release.
or dont bother at all!
much better off just releasing a prologue type game, maybe a early window into GT7 for ps4.
they need to show off a game made for ps4 to get people interested, a ps3 game with sprinkles on top just aint gonna cut it!

I would imagine many PS4 early adopters will just wait on the PS3 version altogether. Then when the PS4 version releases they'll engage it at that time.

If I could, I'd have given you 5 thumbs up. I feel like I'm repeating myself too much about this subject.

Again, even if GT6 is cross gen, it won't be anytime soon because of DriveClub. It doesn't matter how quick they can do it because DriveClub just NEEDS exposure and time by itself. It doesn't matter if it's arcade either because it involves real, high detailed cars, just like GT. It would waste early, potential sales for the game, which is the time when it's more profitable at full price.

How can you release a game on the PS3, and months to a year later, release a high definition version of it? That's not really going to get people excited. Like said above, unless it's within 3 months, it wouldn't be plausible. In one year or so, those who already played (or watched youtube videos of)) GT6 to nearly its death would rather see an all new game altogether whether it'd be GT7 Prologue or GT7 itself. Unless GT6 on the PS4 will have an all new structure, menu, advanced features, and physics, it'd be pointless. Then again, would you call that GT6?

its GT dude, 99% of people are not going to be able to wait for the ps4 version!
obviously depending on how much after it releases.
plus if $ony is smart they wont mention a ps4 version until the ps3 version is out, that way forcing people to re buy it if they want it on ps4.
i cant see this being a launch title, $ony wont want it because of the money they have spent on ps3 development, and they wont want it again because of drive club.
the developers wont want it either simply because the sheer amount of work required, and GT is not exactly a quick easy turn around game.
they would be much better of releasing 6 for the ps3, then once the ps4 releases and drive club has had its fair shot, release GT7 prologue.
if PD is going to work on a ps4 title, it needs to be something that will truly show of what the ps4 is capable of.
a cross generation title rushed to release is going to do one thing.
hurt $ony, hurt PD, and hurt customers, there is no good thing about releasing GT6 for the ps4!
