Will Fallout 4 Leap Over The Bar The Witcher 3 Has Set?

Yeah, I know what the naysayers are saying: "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt didn't set any bar!"

Well, for the sake of argument, let's just assume it did. Let's say the huge ambition on display in CD Projekt Red's massive open-world RPG is now the high watermark for the genre.

Fallout 4 is now on the horizon and I'm just wondering what people think of the game's potential. Die-hard fans of Fallout 3 are already calling the successor a guaranteed masterpiece, and many are convinced it will - at the very least - be more stable and reliable than The Witcher 3. Not sure if that's a safe bet, though, because games like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls have hardly been immune to such problems.

Of course, Fallout 4 is still a ways off so it might not be fair to compare it to The Witcher 3 when it comes out. Then again, maybe we won't see anything between now and then that really blows us away, and the comparison will indeed be apt. What do you think?

Being that the two franchises feel so different, I hope they both stay away from each other's 'bar'

Unless that bar is the size of the world or the graphics or something it doesn't seem fit to compare the two. They are different animals.

Should compare it to skyrim. The witcher 3 is good but not as great as Skyrim was/is.

The Witcher 3 blows skyrim out of the water IMO.

Skyrim has more customization options for your character but, TW3 has it beat in everything else.

So sorry to say but The Witcher 3 is what Skyrim (Elder Scrolls franchise) should aim to be from now on.

1. I personally don't like exploring such a huge world in first person.
2. The setting in TW3 is so much better. You hav swamps, rain, thunderstorm, forests etc.
3. The story in TW3 is so much more enganging
4. The fighting while can be argued but TW3 feels and plays better.
5. Should I continue?

I wish Witcher had a 1st person mode. Some of the immersion gets lost being from the third person imo.

Anyway, I really wouldn't want a Bethesda style RPG to try and be more Witcher'esque or Bioware'ish. There's plenty Bethesda fans who have expressed upset in Witcher 3 because it's much more constrained by way of comparison.

Their objectives are different. I'd be bothered if Fallout or Elder Scrolls all of sudden started defining a bunch of things for you. ie. level capped quests and a shift to more 'on rails' progress.

They need to stay true to what they are or there'll be hell to pay.

and rest assured new Elder Scrolls games will have plenty of 'weather' effects. Keep in mind we're comparing last gen to the current gen here.

The Witcher devs were inspired by Drive Club's weather afterall.

Agree on all points, Temjin. I would add one big advantage Skyrim has to Witcher 3 is the sense of height that it has. It's spread out across a continent, yes, but you also get to climb UP huge mountains, and you explore caverns far DOWN beneath the surface. That sense of depth, for lack of a better word, is something that Skyrim did better than any game I have ever played. I am in love with Witcher 3, but even four years on, there are things Skyrim did that no game, anywhere, has eclipsed.

This game is a near-certain masterpiece in waiting, my only concern is with Bethesda themselves who have a worrying record of churning out lazy ports. Hopefully they have improved on this foul habit that plagued some of their PS3 ports in the past and they start to put some care into all versions of the game.

If you're not going to go through some considerable time or effort to give each console version a stable port then don't bother. Fallout 3 played like an airborne turd on PS3 and probably shouldn't have even gotten a PS3 release due to how much of a mess it was and the PS3 version of Skyrim was aids on a disc when it was first released until it was patched to death.

The game will be grand, you can safely bank on that but a game of such greatness deserves stable quality results on all platforms it's released on, and it's passionate fans shouldn't make do with any less.

That aside, this is the game to watch out for at E3.

I just know that Fallout will make me forget all other games this year. My GOTY is set.

But technically Witcher will very likely be a better "showroom object". I just could not care less, nor will any glitches bother me. Oh no.
Not while wandering the wasteland with my trusted dog as company, my home-made weapon over my shoulder, and with places to go and things to see and weird new characters to approach with caution - some of them whom will become my friends.

It'll be great.

Fallout had always been a firm favourite of mine, the witcher is superb.. But they're both very very different games. It's like comparing GTA5 to the Witcher, just because the movement is similar... Lol

fallout 4 will absolutely not release this year. what we have just seen will be from the opening movie. i doubt we have seen anything that was actual finished game play.

most likely we will see more at e3 this year but not much playable. (i hope for game play footage) this is the first trailer and as hopeful as i would like to be, the game will release late next year.

e3 next year will be the show to watch. they need the time to build the hype. a few months is not enough.

ill take your bet beam as i know i will win it. i would be glad to lose the bet to you. (i wont)

Edit: i have confirmed that bethesda is showing off fallout 4 at e3.

I'm with Beam on this one -- they've been charging ahead on this full steam for four years and were clearly waiting to show it until it was nearly ready. Early hints and clues suggest they will release it later this year. I happen to think they would have told us if the game wouldn't be ready until 2016 already to keep people from getting their hopes up. Why wait to unveil a release date if the release date is a disappointment? Better to get bad news out of the way, and Bethesda knows this.

I say we're all going to be playing Fallout 4 this fall :)

if you look at bethesda history, they typically announce a game a full year before release of a game. they give one video they release details of the game. they then release a second trailer followed by a release date and possible a third trailer.

we have just got the announcement. meaning they are most likely 1 year from completion. e3 will show some game play and tell us what is going on in the world. we wont get a release date til later.

i would love to be wrong.

So, let's make a bet out of it then!

One PSN game, loser choose but it has to be a title the winner don't already own?

(we can gift games via PSN now, right?)

S&S: I think probably early November, or late october (later to be postponed to november).

While I love Bloodborne, The Witcher 3 and I'm sure Fallout 4 will be great. The game of the year will be MGS5.

Let's not forget that.

I don't know. I'm sure MGSV will be great but don't you think with the game moving into more 'open world' progress it puts itself in a highly competitive category?

@Temjin, no question the broadly-defined "open world" genre is very competitive, but I found Ground Zeroes to still very much feel like Metal Gear in the best way -- a guy on a mission, sneaking past sentries, moving deeper and deeper into enemy territory. It's that uniquely MGS feel that I know and love so much, and I don't think a more open structure is going to eliminate it.

Having said that, Game of the Year is going to be very, very competitive this year, especially if Fallout 4 really does launch this year. Is it me or is 2015 shaping up to be a most excellent year for games, from beginning to end?

Why do the character models in that Fallout 4 trailer look so plasticy! I hope it's "footage taken from an unfinished product," and will be cleaned up because they look like garbage. And that dog looks like something from the last CoD game on PS3.

If the game runs and plays great, I don't see why you should get hung up on character models.

Yea, they don't look too great, nor did the dog by current gen standards.

I expect those things to improve. THe star of the show was the cool locales.
