May NPD: PS4 Back On Top, The Witcher 3 Dominates...Duh
Guess the world makes sense again.
According to the NPD Group's monthly sales report, Sony's PlayStation 4 has returned to the top spot in North America.
Microsoft's Xbox One claimed the #1 hardware spot in April but the PS4 is back on top. As a Sony spokesperson said:
"As we head into E3, we would like to thank gamers for making PS4 the top selling console and the leader in software sales in the U.S. in May. PS4 continues to be the cumulative sales leader in the US and globally with more than 20 million consoles already in the market. We are truly humbled by this success and we look forward to sharing what's next for PS4 at our E3 press conference on June 15."
Overall hardware sales fell 18 percent to $153.6 million ($186.4 million in May 2014), and NPD analyst Liam Callahan says this is due to a decline in last-gen console sales, which were down 45 percent year-over-year. Current-gen hardware sales were "stable" and portable sales were up 41 percent, mostly thanks to the new Nintendo 3DS.
On the software side, CD Projekt Red's well-received RPG, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, was atop the list. It also had the best-selling first month unit sales within the RPG genre, which is impressive, considering the game didn't launch until May 19. Here's the Top 10 for last month:
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Mortal Kombat X
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
- NBA 2K15
- FIFA 15
- MLB 15: The Show
- Super Smash Bros.
