E3 2015: OMG, They Did It...Final Fantasy VII Remake IS REAL!

For the first time at any E3, I'm actually speechless.

I really don't know what to say.

Square Enix, do I love you again? I think I might just.

During Sony's E3 press conference tonight, the ultimate reveal has taken place: Final Fantasy VII remake! And it's coming to PlayStation 4 first, which does imply it's a multiplatform project (perfectly fine with me), and we don't have any gameplay or a release date. The CGI trailer they showed off proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Square Enix has remade this RPG classic from the ground up. Looks wow.

I just have one problem left: If they effed up the gameplay; if they turned it real-time, I'm just going to go jump off a bridge. I'd imagine they can't possibly screw things up that badly (hell, offer a real-time option if you want, but do not eliminate the classic gameplay). But you never know.

I'm petrified to find out.

Of course the first time I talk about Shenmue at all in years is me saying two days ago we have to give up on ever seeing Shenmue III, so of course it gets announced tonight.

Let's see if this works for Half Life 3:

Half Life 3 is never going to happen, we need to give up and move on...

I called this one too! ;)

Just kidding of course, and that's not *quite* the whole truth. I certainly didn't expect it this year, but I absolutely did think this would happen some day because the fan demand (read: fan dollars) has been too much to ignore. I think it only took this long for SE to announce it because of the FF XIII quagmire -- they created far more assets than they could possibly use in a single game, hence the XIII sequels nobody asked for, because they needed and wanted to ensure a maximum return on their work. With that finally off the table, they can divert some attention to this.

It's years away -- if we get this in time for the 20th anniversary of the original FF VII I'll be thrilled and surprised -- but it warms my black heart to know this is finally happening. MUCH more to say about this, but I'll sprinkle it out in different comments and threads over the days, weeks, months and years to come :):):)

When we saw that Lifestream flowing from the mainscreen - E3 2015 Sony Conference | Never Forget.

I need a new pair of pants. I can't believe this, like really can't believe this.

Now as for people wondering if they are going to change the gameplay.

It is being called a remake, and to be honest the turn based gameplay of the original was great but it was easy to break the game and make it a joke.

They are going to do one of two things, reworked it and keep it turn based with the materia system. Or they are going to make it an action RPG.

I really don't care because I like both action RPGs and Turn based games. As long as whatever system they have in place is refined and balanced and fun I'm down.

Anyone expecting turn based combat is going to be sorely disappointed. This is a remake, when you see films remade they often change the source material to suit a more modern audience, the same will apply to this, be ready for that.

Certainly caught me by surprise. When I saw the lifestream I thought it was just the PC port to PS4 we heard of last year. Then we got more CGI visuals and the narration made it almost sound like a sequel, so I was thinking another CGI movie in the style of Advent Children but as soon as the narrator finished, it hit me and a rinse of excitement flowed as I realised it is the genuine remake. I'm genuinely interested to see what comes of this, changes will be made, I cannot stress that enough, but I can embrace it just like S-E is willing too. All for this.

What I would love to see it's FF13 battle system implemented, as an option to turn based of course.
With the difference that you would control all character, not just one obviously.

I am extremely happy for those whose hearts sunk when this was announced. You all waited years upon years for this remake.

I personally would have preferred Final Fantasy 8. FF7 was my least favorite from 7-10. The fact that it's my least favorite doesn't mean it was bad it's just I enjoyed the others much more.

I played them in order -- 7, 8, 9 & 10. Unfortunately didn't get to play 12. I think when 12 came out I was too busy playing other RPGs such as Dragon Quest and Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (both of them), Devil Summoner and Nocturne.

9 was my favourite of those batches.

I personally hated 8 because the characters I couldn't relate to, not nearly as bad as FF13s but boy did squall whine. Also the Junction system was convoluted and again not balanced you could completely break the game and be OP with a little planning, or if you didn't understand it could actually get stuck in the game.

I loved the world though.

Dragon Quest 8 and SMT:Nocturne were incredible games.

I can't wait to see what kind of narrative mess they wind up with, given what the original story was, how much they've retconned it, and how they'll try to balance that.

I think there was enough that it can be done. I'd like to see them do more than merely translate the dialogue to English, though. I'd like to see them have translators and accomplished professional writers help out.

I don't think it's appropriate to ask Cloud's voice actor to try to say "Let's Mosey" in character....

I'm not talking so much about the dialogue, but the fact that most people who love this game didn't even understand the story when they first played it, and thought Sephiroth was the villain; they didn't even realize that, except for flashbacks, you never even see the real Sephiroth until you get to the North Cave. He'd been there ever since Cloud tossed his punk ass into the lifestream in Mt. Nibel after Sephiroth stabbed Tifa. All the other times you saw him, you were seeing, and speaking with, Jenova.

How the dialogue was translated was probably at least partly to blame, but it's more that the story itself is a mess, and one of the most revealing cutscenes in the entire game is one you'll never see unless you get all the way to disc 3 and, instead of going into the North Cave, backtrack all the way to Nibel, go downstairs, past Vincent's tomb and into the lab and activate the cutscene.

But Sephiroth proved so popular as a villain that Square retconned the shit out of FFVII with subsequent movies and games, basically making him the ultimate evil dude as opposed to just the strongest of the Jenova experiments.

So do they tell the original story, with better dialogue, pacing and editing to make it clearer? Do they retcon it to fit their previous retcons? Will ultra FF fanboys allow Square executives to live another day if they change even one iota of story or dialogue?

This remake is going to be controversial at best and a hot mess more than likely. I'll still buy it, and play it, I'm not trying to be a hater, but one way or another lots of people are gonna be RAGING.

It is going to be a mess.

But in terms of writing and production, no game excelled in those days when compared to today. We all know that. FFVII was hardly one of the worst; in fact, it was by far one of the best, simply due to scope, characters, and ambition.

Sephiroth was an experiment. I have no idea why we had to know that at all. The discovery that he was really a Jenova experiment is part of the twist; otherwise, there's no mystery, no aura surrounding that character. The puppet-master is never half as interesting as the puppet, so the idea that Sephiroth isn't the "real villain" is meaningless. Square Enix didn't write the entire story as a mistake. They knew precisely what sort of feelings Sephiroth would create and they were right. They didn't create multiple emotional scenes with that character for no reason.

You really believe Square Enix was surprised that everyone gravitated toward Sephiroth? And that they scrambled to take advantage when they noticed? I mean, you can't be serious. Throughout the entire FFVII adventure, it was painfully obvious that the writers had set out to create a legendary character. They had that planned from the start.

You keep complaining that it wasn't clear. You've been told a hundred times by fans of the game that it was never supposed to be clear, that it was a twist to the story, that it added necessary mystery to Sephiroth's character. No, we don't want to know all the villain's reasoning and influences right out of the gate, and we certainly didn't need another mindless rule-the-world moron like Kefka, who was predictable and boring.

Everything about how the story is presented could be upgraded. But the belief that the story itself is just broken is, in point of fact, wrong. Hip and trendy to claim, because people want to sound smart, trying to prove to everyone else that the game really isn't very good, but still wrong...as "hip and trendy" so often is.

Oh cool we're back to where your opinions are fact. I love discussions where your opinions are fact.

I haven't been "told a hundred times that the game wasn't supposed to be clear". Maybe you told me once and that counts 100 times over, or something, but I don't even remember that. The problem isn't that it wasn't immediately clear who Sephiroth was, of course the twist itself was intentional. The problem was that, due to poor translation or simply poor storytelling, a lot of people didn't even understand the twist. The game flat out tells you "I've been Jenova this whole time because I'm a mimic who can change how I look and sound blah blah blah" and people somehow completely missed that. They show Sephiroth chilling inside materia in the North Cave and it didn't register. The twist isn't the problem, the problem was how the twist was done, and what Square did about it after the fact with follow ups in the same world.

It's not even the biggest problem with the story, though. That belongs to what happened to Cloud and why his memories were all FUBAR. To get the full understanding of that you have to do something no rational person would even suspect they needed to do, because this was back when game guides weren't so much a bonus accessory so much as a necessity if you wanted to get the full experience. Thankfully the internet and GameFAQs put an end to that nonsense, but not before Square and Brady Games gave one last valiant effort to gouge people by selling us a FFIX game guide for $20 that literally did nothing but tell you to go to PlayOnline and sign up for an account to get the actual walkthrough. Remember that one? Ah good times.

I kinda disagree. And I'm definitely not one of the folks that didn't see the whole story. I've done everything you could possibly do in that game. And I even got the Golden Chocobo without a guide (I'll always be proud of that). I've read the translations of all the mangas, the blu-ray version of AC, Crisis Core, read the story of Before Crisis, played Dirge of Cerberus to completion, .... just.... everything. I know this game inside out.

Bio, I don't believe the sephiroth you see before the north crater is not the same sephiroth to the point that it's actually Jenova. Sephiroth is Jenova's mimetic legacy, as were all the clones, with the exception being that Sephiroth was injected with jenova cells directly into the fetus well before he was born. He grew, even before birth, with the influence of jenova.

The Sephiroth you see while he is in the crater is the same consciousness he coursed through the lifestream after being tossed in like a ragdoll. Not the same sephiroth, but still the same. Not specifically jenova.

Cloud was given high concentrations of jenova cells, which is different from the failed clones. The failed clones were merely jenova'd. Cloud was jenova'd while becoming a sort of adult test tube baby in mako for 5 years. Cloud and Sephiroth are unique from the other experiments in that they were done differently. (Same applied to Zack, but he died before he could become that strong) Sephiroth isn't just a puppet controlled by Jenova. He genuinely hates everything. I would say it's more accurate to say he's a partner with Jenova, and that they need each other to achieve their goal.

Ben, I continue to play through FFVII once every 2 years since it came out. And while I do hope it retains a turn based system, it definitely needs an upgrade, and trying to release it now with the exact same system couldn't possibly be as successful as doing something a little new. Personally, I don't care what they do so long as it's good. Besides, even if it's the most amazing game ever made, it's doomed to get criticism from a group of gamers no matter what it does.

So for me, just make it awesome. They've done a ton to the story, but I don't personally feel it's convoluted. (It makes complete sense to me) But I do agree with you that it wasn't meant to be clear. In fact, that's something every FF has done prior to FFX-2. They always have fill-in-the-blank endings that aren't 100% easy to figure out without looking back at the clues.

Anyways, I just can't believe for a second it's an immediate guaranteed failure. It can't be the exact same system, because it only works for those of us with nostalgia. Keep the core, sure. But it needs improvement. I, too, hope for a turn based system, but I don't for one second expect or desire them to make it a carbon copy of the original.

Bio: I keep waiting for you to look up the definition of the word "opinion." You and your ilk seem to believe that if anyone makes any statement whatsoever, it's an "opinion." Somewhere along the lines in your education, teachers failed you. Either that, or everyone's self-esteem on the Internet is so bad that if they're proven wrong, they simply can't handle it. Hence, everything ever stated is an opinion, to protect their fragile self images.

It isn't an opinion to say that Square Enix intentionally placed Sephiroth at the forefront of the story for a reason. That's a fact. It isn't an opinion to say that Sephiroth is a beloved character for a reason, and it's not because everyone was just duped. It isn't opinion to say that for the time period in which FFVII launched, it had by far and away one of the best stories in existence. If you want to avoid acknowledging this to suit your own agenda, that's fine. Doesn't make it any less true. Mediocre compared to now? Yep. But that's obviously not what you're trying to say.

You didn't get what I and others got out of the FFVII storyline. That's fine. That right there is an opinion. Me saying I like the game is opinion. This is not the same as the statements above, which are all correct, and not open to subjectivity. All you're doing is trying to say that anyone who liked the story simply isn't as smart as you. If you'd like to clarify that, by all means, but anyone reading that will come to the same conclusion: You know more than they do.

Underdog: Don't bother. Bio obviously knows more than everyone about FFVII's story. And that includes those who wrote it. And as he's never admitted being wrong a day in his life, he's not about to do so now.

As for the combat mechanic, I know they can't leave it exactly the same. But they should give players options, like the classic and modern movement systems in the Resident Evil remakes. People often forget that the default setting in FFVII is actually real-time; not in terms of character movement, but in regards to moves. Leave it on Active and an enemy can move the instant its bar is up; you have to switch it to Wait if you want true turn-based. Hence, even the original wasn't pure turn-based.

I'd be happy with a system like the one in FFXIII-2. I think that would work quite well.

I wasn't trying to imply you, or anyone here, didn't understand the story, Underdog, it's just more of a general observation from the past 18 years of internet talk.

As for this "It's not meant to be clear", I think there's an important distinction between ambiguous and confused. There's narrative value in ambiguity, leaving things open ended and up to the audience to decide (best recent example I can think of is Inception - was Dom dreaming or was he awake? Did the top ever stop spinning, does it even matter?), but confused stories are altogether different. The whole point of stories in art is to evoke a reaction from the audience, but if your audience can't understand your tale because you're deliberating trying to vex them, the only responses you can truly effect are confusion and perhaps irritation. Ambiguous endings are different because we understood the story and concluded it on our own, and how we choose to do so says as much about us as the story we were told.

I don't think that was the goal in FFVII at all. I think they were trying to tell a very clear story with some twists, and I think they believed they revealed and explained those twists well. I would disagree with them about how successful it was, based on how many people completely whiffed on several aspects of the story.

But for the sake of not rehashing the point over and over, either one of us could concede the point and IMO it really wouldn't matter overall to the problem I see which is the constant reworking of the story in follow ups within the same universe. Some of the changes in the subsequent games/movies/etc. are small, like Sephiroth intentionally throwing himself into the lifestream, and some completely rewrite large chunks of the original tale and basically reverse the roles of Sephiroth and Jenova.

So my initial question/observation remains - how do they handle the story in the remake? Do they stay true to the original and piss off fans of the extended universe? Or do they stick to the changes they've made and piss off fans of the original? Do they try for a balance between the two and piss off everyone?

Like I said, one way or another someone's gonna be raging.

As for the battle system I'd love to see them meet everyone halfway and give us something like the gambit system in FFXII. A nice balance between old turn based and the new real time fad, with lots of flexibility in between.

I never even addressed those first two points, and wouldn't even argue them. Sephiroth is obviously cool, and obviously lots of people liked him. I liked him, too.

To say it's a FACT that any story, in any medium, is "far and away one of the best in existence" is so laughably ironic I want to assume you're trolling but you do this so often that it can't be. Seriously, dude, calling your opinions facts a) doesn't make them facts because that's not how facts work and b) doesn't ever have the effect you intend it to.

As an aside, I don't actually think the endings being unclear is a good thing. I do think it's on purpose, because it's a regular practice for them. For me to accept open endings that don't close out characters, there needs to by more done to tool the viewer with what they need to accomplish that on their own.

So yeah... I still say it's on purpose. And to be honest, probably the only reason I disagree is because they did that for most of the FF's, so I'm looking at a trend. (Perhaps on it's own, I might be inclined to agree with you. So I'm admittedly looking beyond the game itself) But I also don't think it's a good thing for these games. But that's definitely just my opinion. Perhaps others got all they felt needed from it.

I didn't really view the end of FFVII as unclear. I get why people would think that, but I think the final scene with Red XIII and his kids 500 years later kind of made a need for character resolution pointless. It was like "It's 500 years later, everyone in this story except Red is dead, so it doesn't really matter what happened to them. What matters is that the planet survived them, and Shinra and Jenova".

Which I kinda liked, especially because JRPGs in general and FF in particular have planet saving as such a frequent theme, only to ignore the actual planet when it's time to tie things up in favor of showcasing personal relationships. This ending made it pretty clear that, yeah, this really was all about the planet all along.

So, in other words, you still have no idea what an opinion is. And you obviously don't feel like reading, as I simply said FFVII was one of the best stories available in this industry during that time period. Which it was, comparatively speaking (and nothing more). If you want to play the card that there's no such thing as "good" and "bad" stories, go right ahead. It's really just too stupid to dignify with a response.
