Donate $3,000 To Shenmue III Kickstarter, Get Ryo's Jacket

This game is going to set a Kickstarter record that will never be topped.

After the Shenmue III Kickstarter was announced during Sony's E3 press briefing, the world went totally nuts.

Now, the immensely successful campaign has brought in over $3.2 million, which means the game is already funded (they needed $2 million). And yeah, there's nearly a month left so there's no knowing how high this number can go.

One of the initial backer rewards was Ryo's original jacket, which was worn at a press event 14 years ago. That one-of-a-kind item is gone now, of course (it went to the first backer to put up $10,000), but you can still grab that iconic jacket. You just have to donate $3,000, which will net you a replica of Ryo's jacket...think it's worth it?

Maybe not, but we know everyone will be anxiously awaiting Shenmue III. Next up on the Stretch Goal list is a Skill Tree System. They'll probably hit that by tomorrow.

I never played this game. Why was it so good that people get crazy about it? And crying on youtube?... that's just beyond me.

Shenmue took an open world experience to new boundaries. It isn't merely a sandbox game where there it nothing to do. in the city almost every store you can enter and interactive with various objects and games. The world is structured by a calendar and dynamic wether system and it is great to see the world react to this - for instance, near christmas time you see the city get into the christmas spirit.

But at the heart of the story you follow a young man seeking revenge for the death of his father and it's superbly told as you investigate the surroundings to learn more about what happened. Sure some of the voice acting is awful but Shenmue's attention to detail and charm simply cannot be denied. It's the single reason I still have my Dreamcast.

Vivi, the 'open world' term wasn't even part of gamer's set of definitions back then, at least widely. This game came well before titles like GTA3 or the explosion of sandbox style gaming experiences.

The team tried to invent a name for the type of genre this sort of game belonged to. They called it F.R.E.E.
Fully Reactive Eyes Entertainment.
Obviously this term never caught on and we just refer to these as open-world games.

Also, I think the term QTE's or 'quick-time-events' originated here. I believe that's what Yu named them and this did catch on as a gamer definition.
The game was before it's time in ambition.

I don't want a $3k jacket, all I want is a physical copy on PS4!
