Fallout 4 At 1080p/30fps On Consoles, PC "Not Limited In Any Way"

If you're wondering about the technical benchmarks for Fallout 4, Bethesda has some info.

During a new Digital Spy interview, Bethesda Creative Director Todd Howard said the anticipated RPG sequel will run at 1080p and 30 frames per second on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Later, the team clarified on Twitter, saying the resolution and frame rate won't be "limited in any way on PC. That isn't too surprising, nor is it surprising to hear about the 30fps as opposed to 60. Open-world games typically run around 30, as it's exceedingly difficult to hit 60 for a really huge, expansive game.

Fallout 4 is scheduled to launch on November 10.

Honestly since 30 FPS gives video a film quality (what they normally use in theatres). it fits the gritty world in a unique way.

No, 30 fps, or 29.97 fps ntsc is the standard for television. Movie theaters are mostly the 24p standard, much more dramatic, blurry effect. All movies get converted to the ntsc standard when they get shown on television.

30fps is absolute peasantry. The sooner people stop with any excuse for 30fps the better.

I seriously did not actually expect you to say that comment in my wildest dreams :D

Thats good. Limitations are overrated, especially when PC games get 35 patches every day. Boom.

Just to be a bit pedantic to what mr Howard says: The limits are defined by the hardware - so of course there's limits on the PC version too. It will just vary depending on the rig.

I really can't wait to return to the wasteland. But now that I've watched the videos over and over I am a *bit* disappointed that there's a dog companion this time too - it feels a bit repetitive, they could have come up with some other pet I think.
A cat would have been sleek - a cat that could reach places we could not. Or something.

But yeah - I really look forward to live on the wasteland again.

The limit on PC games is really only theoretical, since you could put together a PC with 4 GTX Titan Zs in 4-way SLI with 16GB DDR4 RAM and a Core i7-5930K @ 3.5Ghz and still probably break the FRAPS counter even at 4K.

Basically no one is going to do that, of course, but for all practical purposes there's no limit, because they're not limiting it via software like they are on consoles.

Not entirely true, it also depends on if the game is built to take advantage of the hardware. That's why it's generally accepted it's pointless to buy an i7 for gaming. It's only very recently that games take advantage of it.

True, just saying for all practical purposes there is no limit, because you'll get to a point where the extra performance is all academic. If I load up Half Life 2 on my current laptop I'll get like 970fps, which is a pointless number because anything above 60 doesn't really mean anything unless you're on a monitor with a higher refresh rate.

It's all semantics, really, but fun to talk about :)

This game is going to be great. I don't expect perfection (it's Bethesda we're talking about here), but it'll be damn close.

I have a beast rig. Played witcher 3 and arkham knight on max settings, 1080p average 65fps on the latest 4ms response time, Samsung monitor. It's not that big of a deal compared to watching PS4 footage on YouTube. Difference is my rig cost 2 grand vs my ps4 at 400. PC master race my nuts. I just love consoles simplicity. It's priceless.

Btw witcher and Batman I got for free from by the nvidia promotion.

I7 5820k
32gb Ddr4 2400 viper ram
Gtx 970
Msi x99s gaming 7

Plan to sli the gtx 970 once Windows 10 and dx12 releases.

But yeah, computer mainly for media editing but it can run games pretty good too lol. I can officially say I'm not bias when I think console gaming is better. Sorry pc folks. The extra frames, complexity, ultra resolution, and especially freaking cost doesn't justify the slightest bit for me unless you have other uses for the computer.

The cost of another gtx 970 is like another ps4 lol, but I'll do it anyway just because my computer is set up for it and dx 12 will combine the vram. Seriously they latest game is already reaching close to the vram limit of each of the 3.5 fast vram of the gtx 970,'I'll need to sli to play future games. The PS4, I wouldn't have to worry cause devs will optimize for us. Woot.

Nice what was your old card?
Wow that SLI is going to be something man enjoy.

How the heck did that cost you 2k just wondering.
I'm sure I've seen park pickers and other builds for a bit less.

I'm with you on the unneeded fluff of 4k and similiar ultra res and fps higher than 60. Who the hell should care about that. All we need is 1080 60fps -- and I wouldn't give up that 60 for anything.

Games by Naughty Dog and likewise console devs will always trump anything on PC anyway for quality. It's bind-boggling how elitists always try counter that.

That rig wouldn't have cost you more than $1,000 to put together yourself (32GB RAM is overkill). Comparing every part in a computer to just a console is kinda weird, too. You need an HDTV for your console, and if you want to play online you need a $50/yr subscription.

All told, the prices are perfectly comparable unless you play on an old, junk TV, and with most games you'll get way, way more performance out of PC. The PC vesions of Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight are a mess. You can only get 60fps on Knight by editing the .ini and even people on GTX 970s are reporting they can barely hit 30fps because the game is so poorly optimized. WB literally changed the minimum and recommended specs for the game one hour before release, and are now suggesting everyone play at 720p with every setting on low until they fix things.

It's kind of pointless to put a frame rate cap on a PC game because removing it is a simple matter of changing a number in a file.
