EA Sports' Next-Gen Ignite Engine Offers "Human-Like" AI

Amid all the Xbox One hullabaloo, EA Sports decided to announce a brand new next-generation engine.

It's called Ignite and it will power new EA Sports titles for the new Xbox and PlayStation 4. This year's crop of sports games will boast the fresh engine, so you can check it out if you purchase Madden NFL 25, FIFA 14, NBA Live 14 or EA Sports UFC. All of these will be available within the next year.

The Ignite engine improves rendering, run-time physics, animation, AI, locomotion and online systems. The publisher boasts that this new engine is capable of displaying athletes with "human-like intelligence" and the stadiums and arenas will be like "living worlds."

Said EA in a statement:

"Athletes in EA Sports next-gen games will be able to make intelligent decisions with human-like reaction times. EA Sports Ignite computes four times more calculations per second than previous consoles, unlocking nearly infinite potential for how players think, and enabling them to make more difficult decisions faster.

Players are alive with contextual awareness and instincts--thinking, anticipating, and reacting--just like real athletes, and players are conscious of their environment. In FIFA 14, for example, a player’s sense of urgency increases as the match draws on and a goal is needed, rushing to take a free kick, corner, or goal-kick if time is running down."

Sports games don't quite dominate the industry the way they once did, but several franchises are still immensely popular. And I'm interested to see the next step in realism and authenticity. How about you?

I don't really care about the sports games. I mean the engine does look kind of nice but i would have rather learned more about the frostbite since it is pretty awesome. But EA does worry me now as a company more than it ever did. I rented AO2 devils today and i went to check out and see if there was an online pass and... There was a microtransaction for hit markers. Seriously i didn't know what to say. Ended up not playing the game because i was so disalussioned by that. if they can get away with that whats to stop them from making you pay to reload your gun.

Well their market research apparently told them that everyone loves microtransactions!

They tend to exaggerate in their advertising. They have to sell a FIFA every year right? Take it with a grain of salt.

That's what I'm talking about. Finally there's room for some real AI.

They are obviously exaggerating, but I am very happy to see that the developers use this opportunity to spend the new powers on areas where it is needed the most. And AI is *definitely* one of those areas. It will benefit all games and genres.

Really, EA. You're embarrassing yourself here. Nobody believes that you have cracked the code on human intelligence and can now duplicate it in your sports games. Your hyperbole-based marketing does not help your cause.

so what can we learn from this? Apparently 4 times more calculations than just the AI part of current consoles are enough for human like intelligence...

Amazing what PR can come up with...

AI in Madden already plays dirty, they don't need more processing power for that. Don't ever play the 49ers in a "close" game in the 4th quarter. You will fumble when Patrick Willis, Navaro Bowman, or Dashon Goldson even looks in your direction.

I get Madden every year because I need a football game. period. 2K Basketball is the only other sports game I play.
