Does The Last Guardian Have Any Hope Of Selling Well?

I think we all know that, given the amount of money that will ultimately go into the project, The Last Guardian will need to sell very well in order to be profitable.

Sony made it plain that the new game has to outperform the likes of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. No surprise there, really.

However, is it really feasible?

In an industry ruled by casual gamers, it's hard to imagine a game like this becoming a runaway blockbuster. Granted, it won't have to reach huge Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed numbers to be profitable, but it will have to sell a few million at least. I just worry that we no longer have the audience for a game like that; an adventure that's more artistic and spiritual and cerebral than most other titles on store shelves. No guns, no violence, no explosions, no fast-paced bounce-around gameplay. And it's a new IP, too.

In a world where fast, flashy and dumb always supersedes intelligent and thoughtful, you can't really hope for much from The Last Guardian. You just can't. I hope Sony isn't being unrealistic in their internal estimations. They're usually not, though; they expected Heavy Rain to sell way less than it ultimately did but really, how many new IPs with very non-mainstream gameplay mechanics fare as well as Quantic Dream's masterpiece? It just doesn't happen that often.

Sony better remember to market the hell out of Guardian and I wouldn't recommend releasing it during the holiday season. The less competition the better. Even so, I wonder what the game's sales potential really is...

I agree with all that you said especially the fact it should not release around the holiday season. It should release sometime in the Summer where there's usually a game drought.

I think it is gonna get some poor ratings of what they showed at the E3 gameplay doesnt get any better .. or exciting for that matter. Ethird was not impressed.

The Team Ico games have more been puzzle games than anything else Ico was mostly puzzle and platforming and Shadow of the Colossus made combat itself a puzzle and the monsters the platforming stage.

Last Guardian likely won't be any different and looks like it will be a lot closer to Ico so if you have some time I suggest buying the HD remaster which can easily be completed in under 10hrs. Or just get the bundle with both, also I must say the 3D on Shadow of the Colossus was really well done wish we were still getting 3D games.

It is really hard to describe either of them I can just say they are quite pleasant and true works of art. The feeling and atmosphere each game gives off is astounding.

I don't think it's going to sell well at all. The majority of people that did want it lost most of their excitement long ago. Those that got some back from E3 probably won't help overall.

It's in a genre which won't see the sales Sony probably expects. Especially this long after development started.

I like to see originality in new IPs, but the fact that there will be zero enemies in the Last Guardian just kills it for me.
I know not every game has to be non-stop violence, but the world of Shadow of the Colossus already felt empty, and it still had a dozen bosses.
Wandering around an empty complex, solving puzzle after puzzle, hearing the same few commands rather than fleshed out dialogue, doesn't sound very enticing to me personally.

Have they confirmed this? There were enemies in Ico and we saw enemies in the original trailer for The Last Guardian.

I could be wrong, it's only something I read in a couple comments elsewhere. I assumed they hadn't made it up. If I am wrong, that bodes better for the game.

It seems it will have at least an armored knight, but either way I hope it's not as minimalist in that regard as what's been revealed so far.
I guess this dev isn't exactly known for much dialogue, but it would be nice to at least get some sentient characters outside of the main protagonist and pet.

And therein lies our problem. The comments alone prove how divided the community is when it comes to The Last Guardian and games of its ilk.
I played ICO and I wasn't thinking of guns or that I needed more enemies to fight. There was little actual conversation but it didn't feel that way. Even to this day, I find it difficult to express how great ICO is.
It is an innocent yet mature experience. See ...
Still, the average consumer is not interested in artsy games and to them, it may come across as boring and dumb. It's funny how some of us view that the other way around.
However, it is unlikely that Sony is going to have unrealistic expectations of The Last Guardian especially as they were totally rocked at the success of Bloodborne. If they do, then the team responsible needs to read some of the sites and forums.

I don't know... I mean, you're definitely going to get some astronomically polarized reviews. This is a highly publicized game, so some sites are going to want to us it to garner site traffic.

That said, I used to be super excited for this, but my interest is almost completely gone. Even watching it I thought it kind of looks like a remastered PS2 game. I think it's going to take some pretty great reviews from this site and the people here I respect to get me on board again.

PS2 remaster indeed! Unless they revamped the gameplay to better suit the next gen crowd, this present archaic style is only going to distract buyers. Myself included.

I was happy for the fans when this was shown. For me, puzzle based platformers are nice now and again but this is likely something I won't be dropping $60 on. I was one who grew frustrated when playing SotC and it was abandoned unfinished. I may revisit it someday in the form of its remaster. Like I said, I'm happy for the fans.

I also felt the Last Gaurdian visuals looked mostly like something from PS3 so technically it failed to impress me. It also doesn't help when 3 visual discriptions come to mind whenever I think of it. empty. yellow. grey.

Will definitely be buying this day one. Anyone who played ICO or SOTC will probably love this game.

For me personally being really excited for a game and waiting years does not kill my excitement. I want this game just as bad as I did all those years ago, and now that we have an actual release window I am even more excited!

If it's great and gets the proper amount of exposure, I think it'll do just fine. Besides, the game has that big adorable bird dog thing.

You know, they should make funny pet videos of the thing and put them on youtube. That'll get it selling.

To me, that bird dog looks like an homeless disease infested animal that roams the alleyways late at night. You know, the things myths are made out of in this world.

That thing is beyond bizarre.

yeah i think release timing is going to be critical and i'm sure they the team would be idiots to not be considering that or be thinking about that. and yeah i think it is possible to sell a couple million maybe more but don't be too overly optimistic they(sce)need to be realisitic about sales even with the budget for the game like guys(SCE i'm talking to you) even a modest profit here will be okay even if it is a bit more a long term thing like the tombraider reboot launch debacle by SE don't make the same mistake.

happy gaming
