Okay Rocksteady, It's Time To Leave Batman Behind
Yes, Batman: Arkham Knight is stellar. It only proves once again that Rocksteady is a top-tier developer.
However, doesn't it behoove us to ask such a talented team to branch out? Shouldn't they spread their wings and apply their obviously prodigious talents to something new?
I'm all for giving the fans what they want and I was the first to applaud Rocksteady's return to the Batman franchise. Arkham Origins just wasn't up to snuff and the franchise needed a rejuvenation that only Rocksteady could provide. I think that much is clear now. Arkham Knight is, in my mind, the definitive Batman game and quite possibly the best superhero game ever devised.
Okay, so you've scaled that mountain. You've planted your flag and gamers everywhere should be mucho appreciative. So, what to do now? I suppose you could tackle another superhero game; we've needed a fantastic Superman game for decades. But personally, I'd like to see these guys try something entirely different. Like what Guerrilla Games is doing with Horizon: Zero Dawn (talk about a departure from Killzone, right?). Great developers owe it to themselves to try their capable hands at new ideas and concepts, and we all benefit when that happens.
Well, ideally. I guess Rocksteady could try an RPG or a platformer or something and it could end up sucking. Then we'd all be yelling at them to make another Batman. But isn't that a risk worth taking? I think it is.
