Ultimate RPG GotY 2015 Battle: The Witcher 3 vs. Fallout 4?

Last year's best role-playing game was a no-brainer in our opinion. It just had to be Dragon Age: Inquisition.

But things could be a lot tougher this year. Perhaps the final battle will come down to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and the upcoming Fallout 4.

I know many want to toss Bloodborne into the mix as well, but perhaps some see it as more action and less RPG? One could argue it relies more on the dexterity of an action aficionado than The Witcher 3, even though both offer real-time combat based on a solo individual.

Anyway, for RPG purists, I think it really will come down to Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3. Which one do you think will get the nod? And here's another question to throw a wrench into the works: Should we consider The Witcher 3 as it is at the end of the year (all fixed and improved), or do have to only consider the launch product? That's an interesting question, really... I'm not a big fan of the Fallout series but chances are, it's going to bring down some huge scores and hopefully, it'll be a lot more stable than The Witcher 3 was at launch.

What say you?

I feel like there's a bias towards Bethesda's stuff. FO4 may have that going for it.

While I don't doubt Fallout 4 will likely be great and possibly goty worthy, I do wonder if it can feel as significant to the RPG scene as Witcher 3 has. Basically, Witcher 3 doesn't feel like just another bigger-badder-better open world sandbox. I feel FO4 will have to do more than that to earn itself top honors.

As for the bugs. idk. It's subjective. I feel like things should be observed from a "launch window" perspective. Basically, the state it's in from about 1 month from launch. Yea, it's arbitrary but that's my notion on the matter. I say this because it's more or less the norm these days that the early-adopters have to deal with bugs for a few weeks. That and the greater majority of those who experienced the game probably happened within the first month or two.

Bloodborne. But I'm sure Fallout 4 will blow me away too. When it comes down to it, Dishonored will win my GOTY.

Ben said he didn't want to include Bloodborne because it was too action'y

'Fallout 4' looks awesome, and I wouldn't try to predict the quality of the final product so early, but the contrarian in me wants to instinctively side with 'Wild Hunt.' Bethesda's initial take on the 'Fallout' universe was great, but I do think the 'role-playing' involved combat too often, where I think it could be more balanced.
'Fallout' will undoubtedly be more popular, but I also imagine many players not getting much deeper into the experience than just killing random NPCs. As much as I like having this freedom, I just don't think it's as engrossing as what 'Wild Hunt' has to offer.

I don't think you know what you're talking about. Having put 100's of hrs. into all these games, I can confidently say Fallout has always had way more things to do by a large margin.Witcher is big and incredible but Fallout has more quests, weapons, items, places, bigger more open world, equipment, and a way deeper customization especially with base building now in 4,etc.

Gonna say Witcher 3 for now, because Fallout 4 is not out yet, so i don't know what to say about that, i wait until i get my hand on Fallout 4 to see it myself. Although i know Fallout 4 will turn out great...

@Temjin: Vivi and I know that.

What we are saying is that nothing else matters in the face of MGS5 whether it's an RPG or another genre.

I'm pretty sure that's what Vivi meant. Correct me if I'm wrong, Vivi.

Structure wise, I don't see The Phantom Pain and The Witcher 3 being much different really, with The Phantom Pains new open world and mission/quest structure. I know it's weird to,call MGS and rpg... But if The Witcher 3 is then I don't see The Phantom Pain being any different really.

With all due respect to the very good Witcher 3, Bethesda games stand apart. And for all the advances it brings to the open world fantasy genre, it's still standing on the shoulders of Skyrim, in my opinion. Fallout games are something singular, really, almost a genre unto themselves. Time will tell if it delivers, but I for one am betting on it being the best RPG of the year.

Question to those who have played Witcher 3..

Can you create weapons and a base in that game like we will be able to do in Fallout 4?

There's some weapons and armor crafting, though I don't think it's nearly as robust a system as, say, Skyrim. Others who've played deeper into the game than me may beg to differ, though (I'm taking an extended break to play Arkham Knight which, if anyone was wondering, is bloody fantastic ;)

You can create weapons but not nearly at the level of customization Fallout has.No there are no bases.

I didn't read too much into Fallout 4 yet, but it seems like it's very much like the previous Fallout. What's different about it?

Also, I should've hopped on that Pip boy limited edition when I had the chance...been out of stock for awhile :(

I was so let down by dragon age. It started good but then I figured out there was absolutely no nice girl in the game... lol the gay guys had more make-up than any woman in that game and the only one with a bit of class was bald and wearing the hat of a power rangers evil summoner...

So long story short got to more than half the game then I quit because social justice warriors ruined the game and there were no more pretty woman in the story lol
