Will Shenmue 3 And FFVII Remake Attract Brand New Fans?

Ever since they announced Shenmue 3 and the Final Fantasy VII Remake at E3, I've been wondering:

Is there any chance these new incarnations can attract the younger generation? In other words, will either game appeal to anybody who is unfamiliar? If you never played the original games, what are the chances that you're going to care?

I guess there's a slim chance. Square Enix has already said the FFVII remake won't be the same game, which probably means they're planning some real-time action-oriented mess that doesn't even remotely resemble an RPG. But whatever. It's what they do. As for Yu Suzuki and Co., I think they might produce something that's closer to the original game(s); it might be better that it didn't hit the $10 million goal, actually.

If Square Enix wrecks FFVII, nobody will want it. The fans will just ignore it and try to pretend it doesn't exist, while newcomers will only see "Final Fantasy" in the title and likely be scared off. If you want the action crowd, it's hard to convince them to buy a franchise they've always associated with role-playing, no matter how flashy and bombastic you can make it. As for Shenmue 3, I have a bad feeling it can only be effectively marketed towards Japanese gamers. Young American gamers will only see "some old Japanese game" they don't care about.

But who knows, right?

I haven't played previous Shenmue's and I won't be playing this one either - just not my thing, so the answer is "no".

I'm sold on FF7 whatever the outcome will be.
So you are WRONG.

I don't know... the problem is that there is still not option of getting a HD remaster of Shenmue 1 & 2. I think that is still vital to the release of Shenmue 3. So ppeople can gather an understanding of just how much of a step forward the game was - While we have sandbox titles today, Shenmues environments feel alive, with the active time system set to calander dates. But at the heart of Shenmue is a compelling story of a man seekign vengeance and what it will lead to we will have to wait and see :)

As for Final Fantasy VII... I can't tell, this will be very different to the original, think of it almost as an adaptation in up to date technology rather than a piece by piece remake. Different battel system, no world map, voice acting you may not like. It's going to be a tough journey, but one I am still encouraged by.

Definitely. I, for one, had completely missed what Shenmue was before all this. If I get into it, then that's one new fan right there! lol

FFVII will attract new fans because it's a legend in gaming. Even those who never touched it have heard of it. And it's story is alluring as well. It's not exactly Shakespeare, but it has all the key components of Melodrama. And people are suckers for textbook fantasy melodrama... just look at Star Wars.

If FFVII is turn based at its core (ya know despite whatever new bells and whistles exist) then you'll see new fans.

People who don't yet know this kind of battle is much more epic, intelligent, strategic, cinematic, and generally more cool than just whacking the bad guy will enjoy and wonder why it wasn't done before.
