Destiny's The Taken King DLC Will Offer Weapon Balancing

The huge upcoming expansion for Destiny, The Taken King, doesn't just include a bunch of new content.

It will also feature some significant balancing tweaks for the weapons, something the community will undoubtedly appreciate.

Those who play routinely probably know all about the power of the hand cannon Thorn, and the awesomeness of the Gjallarhorn rocket launcher. But Bungie has plans to even the playing field a bit, as they've outlined in their latest Weekly Update. They're putting a special emphasis on Auto Rifles; previously, they lessened the effectiveness of these weapons in competitive multiplayer and in The Taken King, Bungie will make them more capable again.

As for the Gjallarhorn, the developer doesn't like that this weapon has become a requirement for Raid and Nightfall groups:

"What we did not intend, and what we unfortunately saw, was pick up Raid and Nightfall groups gating participation based on whether or not players had this weapon. Gjallarhorn was so strong that for many people it had become the only answer to getting through tough encounters, and therefore they were less willing to spend time with other players that didn't have it."

You can check out the full list of tweaks through the link above. If you're a little behind, here are the content details for The Taken King DLC (which Bungie is saying is more like a whole new game), and don't forget about that sweet PS4 bundle coming this fall.

I don't think the fans are pleased. The patch aims at pve and people who abuse the guns skills, which is in the minority. Reducing range and ammo for the hand cannon for example is crazy, these are two areas that need increasing not reducing, the ice breaker going from 1 bullet every 5 secs to every 8 is just unnecessary.

Seems the destiny community is less than happy with the recent decisions that the devs have made, unless they do something positive it's totally going to bite them on the arse.

The Hand Cannons in PVP were way to overpowered. This was evident by nearly everyone running around with Thorn or The Last Word.

What is happening to the Ice Breaker isn't going to kill it either. A three second difference will not destroy the usefulness of the weapon.

With as many weapons in Destiny, there shouldn't be 5-10 super weapons that people use all the time. I look forward to this balancing.

No, absolutely these changes are not welcome. Icebreakers ammo regen needs to be faster not slower. And agree with Bunny regarding hand cannons. Gjallarhorn is sacred and shouldn't be touched. It's too rare and now it's going to be made run off the mill mediocre. The only reason anything is getting nerfed now with the Taken King coming out is to manipulate the community into buying the new over priced dlc because the old weapons just aren't going to be up to snuff.

I think there should be more of a push to make other exotics more unique instead of nerfing some of the more powerful guns. I understand thorn's tweak, but not the last word's. You have to take some time getting used to that gun. I'd consider quick kills with that as rewarding skill. There's a sniper rifle with a skill rewarding park that's also getting taken down a peg. I can't remember the name, but it seems like a change for the sake of change. The auto rifle bumps are welcome though and I'm glad to see that hard light in particular is getting some special attention. I'm not too worried about the tweaks though even if they will diminish my favorite hand cannons. Other weapons will rise in the ranks and I might end up using one of them more instead. On the bright side it'll shake things up and possibly even out the playing field so as to give some new comers time to learn while the veterans get readjusted and find the next gun everyone will hate/love.
