Sony Bosses Reply To Fans Concerned About DRM In PS4

After all the ruckus surrounding the Xbox One and how it will approach used games (not with a fee, as initially rumored, but with online "spot-checks"), PlayStation fans started to become a little cocnerned.

After all, we don't know everything about the PlayStation 4 yet, and there's a decent chance Sony might implement a similar pre-owned DRM schme of their own. In fact, Game Informer's Geoff Keighley says Sony will indeed follow that path, if his sources are correct.

Unsurprisingly, PlayStation fans everywhere began a "No PS4 DRM" campaign, which has gained plenty of steam. It started with a NeoGAF post and has since been making the online rounds. The good news is that Sony upper management peeps are taking notice, as noticed by Gameranx. Sony Hardware Marketing boss John Killer said on Twitter:

"This is why I love PlayStation fans- the passion bucket overflows #playstation"

SCEA producer Nick Accordino stated:

"Humbled by the outpouring of passionate PlayStation fans and their willingness to talk to us directly. Please know that we hear you."

Sony senior business development manager Shadid Kamal Ahmed added:

"To all the fans, with a special mention to the GAFers, I *love* your passion. It convinces me that the path I chose 31 years ago was right."

Sony hasn't announced their plans for how their new console will deal with used games. But right now, it's clear what the gamers want...or rather, what they really don't want.

Things should stay as they are with an online pass system to use the psn features!
I don't want to have to install entire games to my HDD from disc & i want to be able to swap games with my bro's & mates without any DRM hassle.
Keep things the same Sony & you'll mop the floor with the competition next gen & win this gen!!!!

I don't know why people are ok with "online passes." They've caused me soo much trouble and I've ended up not buying any games new that use an online pass and not at all if multiplayer is the main feature.

If they want to charge for used copies to play online then they should leave out that feautre and sell online as DLC or something so I don't have to buy it.

@firesoul... Errr... It is an online pass. You don't need to buy it if you don't want to play online. -__-

That's all fine and dandy when I am buying a game like uncharted 3, but sometimes I do want to play online....

If Sony listens to the fans and allows used games on the PS4 without any kind of "checks" or fees, the PS4 will win the console war without a question. Common Sony, I know you will do the right thing.

I'm still kinda worried over this and I hope Sony doesn't go the way of DRM, it'd be a big let down for me. I mean its already not backwards compatible with PS3 games and u can't carry over ur digital contents from PS3-4

Imn worred too blaqsmyth. Sony better not screw up like MS has. If I cant have full control over my used games I will go back to Nintendo.

What worries me is that if Sony and MS stick together and goes through with this DRM crap, then, eventually, people will give in and not care.

Ben, I'm not completely up to date with Geoff Keighley and his job listings, but I think that should probably read GameTrailer??

I hope they are truly listening, as everyone has showed MS, we don't want this crap anywhere.

Used games will eventually die when physical media does, so please just let it be for now!

John Killer? So he's often referred as Mr. Killer? Sweet. I sure Sony is watching on the do and don't of what Microsoft is doing. My worry is this whole DRM and used game thing is more driven by the developers and both MS and Sony will probably do to make them happy to get their games on their respective consoles. My 2 cents.

The developers are indeed the ones pushing for DRM as they are against used game sales. The hands of Sony and Microsoft are being forced. At some junction, it will be a moot point as all games will eventually be released digitally rather than physically anyway.

Publishers are the ones pushing this. That's an important distinction. Publishers are the ones who have been doing everything they can to ruin gaming for the past few years. Developers are at the mercy of publishers and are forced to do as they're told--apart from indie, self-published developers; otherwise known as the one saving grace of the industry, these days.

I find it hard to believe that Sony's hand would be forced by a publisher.

At the end of the day, the publisher wants to maximise it's sales, so the publisher can't do anything about it. For example:

EA demands DRM.
MS says okay, Sony says no.
Fans love Sony for it, and the PS4 goes on to sell 10million consoles in its first year, while the Xbone only sells 2million.
That means EA is depriving themselves of 10million potential sales.

Those numbers are obviously an example, but even IF Sony sold less than the Xbone, publishers cannot deny themselves of the amount of revenue they would get from a console.

If PS4 does lock things down with online DRM nonsense, I'm not touching it, and I've been a loyal supporter since PS1. They can say we'll follow where ever the games are, but I've got an entire wall of games right now, and honestly don't need any more. If Sony and Microsoft want my business, they're not going to accomplish that by putting up artificial barriers.

I have plenty of consoles, a nearby retro game store, and no tolerance for DRM scams. Your move, Sony. "Do the right thing."

DRM will be the future unfortunately. One day physical games will no longer exist, that is the day DRM will rule.

Thankfully an all digital future is still a long way away.

Says who?

Just like Online/used games DRM nonsense, abandon physical discs and I'm out. There's no benefit for consumers for an all-digital future.

Sony has the chance to completely own the next generation.

Everything about the Xone is well to be frank pretty terrible. It is like a console that you buy that then gives you all these rules and tells you what to do.

The PS4 looks very promising in terms of specs and features, and if Sony is smart and keeps the online free and DRM minimal they are going to win the respect of pretty much every console gamer regardless of previous brand loyalty.

This is from the Kaz Hirai parody twitter account. Pretty funny.

"CEO Kaz Hirai:
Sony has seen your #PS4NoDrM hashtag and took note. We now have absolutely no intention to release Dr Mario on PS4"

Sony's fanbase is said to be one of the most vocal on the internet. And many "opposing" fanboys and self-decrared unbiased gamers have been saying Sony's fanbase is one of the worst when it comes to trolling the other big 2 and the likes.

But there's no denying that it's also the most dedicated of the big 3 as well.

Nintendo probably comes second. With MS a distant 3rd.

I don't agree with the trolling fanbase.

Considering the majority of the 360's fanbase is 12-30 year old males, who are notorious as the biggest trolls on the internet, and most of their fanbase is in america, home of bullying and the birth place of trolling.

I would definitely say the 360 has the biggest troll fanbase.
