The Witcher 3 Patch 1.07 Has Upgrades But Frame Rate Drops
The latest huge patch for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is now available, but is it the upgrade everyone wanted?
Well, that depends. On the one hand, we get several big additions that significantly alter the experience. On the other hand, Digital Foundry finds that frame rate in the PlayStation 4 version takes a hit. Here's part of the unfortunate analysis:
"With the new patch installed, the PS4 version doesn't get off lightly either. A route through the bog shows frame-rates lower than our original 1.05 test, where its lock at 20fps holds more consistently as we pass through the boggy thicket. On top of that, even traveling through simple countryside roads (or Novigrad's central city) continues to produce single-frame stutters every few seconds - a rough point we had hoped would be ironed out by now.
Overall, little has improved in PS4's bid for a smooth 30fps reading here, and in fact, the tail-end of our Novigrad test shows dips to 25fps as we hit the marketplace - something not seen on the last patch."
On the plus side, we get a personal stash, much better inventory management and menu organization, and several big control tweaks. The horse handles a little better now, and you can choose an alternate control scheme for Geralt. This removes his tank-like momentum-based physics and allows him to react faster. I suppose one could argue that turning on a dime isn't realistic, but neither is any other aspect of a fantasy RPG.
If you're still playing the game, have you experienced frame rate issues after downloading the patch?
