Mirror's Edge 2 Spotted Again, Xbox One Exclusivity Rumored?

Last week, a NeoGAF user spotted a listing for Mirror's Edge 2 on the German branch of Amazon's website.

Now, a second retailer listing has arisen; this time it's on the Italian arm of Amazon, as cited by OXM. And because both times the listing only encompassed Microsoft platforms (Xbox 360 and Xbox One), the assumption is that this sequel will be exclusive.

Wait a minute. The author of this article at OXM decided not to mention that Mirror's Edge is an EA property? And that EA simply doesn't do exclusivity for the sake of profit? Unless EA dumped the IP and someone else picked it up, wouldn't you say the chances of Mirror's Edge 2 being exclusive to the Xbox One are...um...zero? Microsoft might have the cash to make it a timed exclusive but even that would be a stretch. Third-party exclusivity is rare for a reason.

I say a bunch of Xbox One ''exclusives'' gonna be timed, that's how MS promote things, remember when they announced Rising first? they made it sound/look like it was a 360 exclusive lol.

I also doubt Mirrors Edge sequel gonna be exclusive.

Ya MS has a warped definition of "exclusive"

Also the only reason X360 had exclusives was due to cash, PS3 had them because the 360 simply couldn't play some of their exclusives.

Sony's definition of exclusive: You can only play it on Sony consoles.

Microsoft's definition of exclusive games: You can't play it on Sony consoles, at least not a first.

You know what really surprises me? That PSXExtreme gets more articles that involve Xbox One than PlayStation 4.

It's all free marketing for Microsoft. Even if the articles are negative, it is still free media attention.

There's been no official announcement so I don't think we should read too much into this. But I agree if it is in fact an exclusive then it's probably no longer owned by EA.

Oh. My. Gowd...

... One horrible, horrible thought struck my mind just now: What if the next Mass Effect game is a Xbox exclusive too, just like how the first trilogy started?!

Something will die inside of me if that turns out to be the case. Seriously, that will be one major blow to my gamer face.

Again, it's EA. And the way the BioWare bosses speak, they have no intention of limiting their scope.

But wasn't it also EA back when the first Mass Effect were released?

They were working on Mass Effect when they were purchased but it was EA when they released, yeah. My problem was that the insane development cycle will work against the game and diminish it. The Extended Cut for Mass Effect 3 showed what Bioware could have done with even two more months time. If that had been the ending shipped, then the controversy would have been considerably muted.
Bioshock Infinite proved that if you're going to go with a mindf**k, out-of-left-field ending then you need to take the time to think through all of the implications of what you're doing. EA didn't give Bioware that option with ME3 and it showed. Also, it's being developed by Bioware Montreal and not the team in Edmonton. If I buy ME4 then it'll be after I've read reviews and at a steep discount.

... ergo, EA has already signed an exclusive deal at least once before.

I am not assured here.

Well ok, but why can't that happen again? What's different from then and now? EA was in the picture back then too, if they let MS publish a game made by one of their developers then, why not now?

My first worry regarding the next gen is hereby born.

I think the thing was that EA didn't pick up the franchise or Bioware until after MS published the first. And the the reason the second was exclusive on 360 for a while was, I'm assuming, that when EA bought the franchise one condition upon the sale was timed exclusivity. But that's a condition. EA already owns Mirror's Edge 2.

It can't happen, Beamboom. That was a very different time in the industry, when major third-party publishers could afford to release big-name titles for only one console. That was a common thing in those days.

I'm sure you've noticed that it basically doesn't exist anymore. The only games that are exclusive come from studios owned by the console manufacturers, almost without exception. No chance in hell a publisher like EA or Activision agrees to keep one of their games on only one manufacturer's system. They'd lose far too much money; I can't imagine the mountain of cash Microsoft would have to cough up to make this happen.

And with Mirror's Edge, I doubt MS would even think it's worth it. It's not a big enough name to dump that amount of money into. Be reassured. :)

You're talking about a company sitting on a huge warchest that spent $50 million for timed exclusivity on DLC for GTA IV, so it's not out of the question. They're more than able to hand a publisher $100 million and say "Make us a game." I don't think they would do it with a niche title like Mirror's Edge, but they could.

I just so look forward to get it confirmed on E3.
A big, fat PS4 logo at the end of the Mass Effect unveiling and my heart rate can return to normal.

Good luck playing Mirror's Edge 2 with that Xbox controller.

Too early to make assumptions at this time.

The other thing is...I don't know why they'd want Mirror's Edge 2 as an exclusive. Not that the first one wasn't good-I loved it-but it did release way back in 2007 and it's not like it has a huge fan base. So while there may be a few hardcore gamers who will really want it the majority (which is clearly what MS is going for) will not really care. Therefore, I can't see it being worth the money to make it an exclusive.

In a way makes sense, just watch all the bad decisions they are making with the xbox One, they going for franchises that are niche would be logic xD.

p.s. I also like Mirror's Ede but it isn't a system seller.

Considering that Respawn's unannounced Titan game is being published by EA and is exclusive to Xbox, I don't think you can say they never produce exclusive titles.

True, but it would be beyond peculiar to take a once multiplatform game exclusive for EA. Ubi tried it with Conviction and kind of squibbed it in sales.

Yeah, I don't think it's particularly good business, but we'll just have to wait and see how deep the partnership is between the two. If you think about the depth of Microsoft's recent payouts (400 million to the NFL and 3 billion to AMD), who knows how much they could have lined EA's pockets to garner these exclusives.

And if you think about it, their DRM policies aren't that far apart either. Nice little evil union I would say

Bayonetta on the Wii-U. Mirrors Edge 2 on the XB1? What's next? I hope this next generation sorts itself out. I don't want to start a franchise on one console then have to finish on another. Or in the case of these two games, not continuing at all! If the rumors are true of course.

might just be a rumor, didn't somebody say that M$ might
steal multiplat games and make them exclusives.

multiplat games may sell more but on the flip side, M$ has "very"
deep pockets.

Hell no!!

Hell better not!!

I loved Mirrors Edge. Has to be one of the defining games of this gen. They tried something different and for me at any rate they succeeded. Like others I wished the game was bigger or longer, but it was a fun playing it.

Whether the plans are next gen, most likely, I hope they do not change the gameplay too much.

Keep Playing!

At worst it's a timed exclusive. One way or another it'd probably come to PC anyhow for those who dual platform PS4 and PC
