PSXE Poll Update: Open-World Is Great, But We Need Variety

The open-world structure is currently dominating the videogame industry.

The question is, are you okay with this? Well, according to our latest poll, most of you are just fine with the trend, provided developers still work in a wee bit of variety.

It certainly seems like any big-budget AAA production these days is open-world and if it isn't, there are complaints. Even traditionally linear franchises like Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy are going open-world, and most new IPs announced in the past year or so also follow the popular formula. Even the upcoming Uncharted 4: A Thief's End will offer more open-ended exploration.

This week, let's talk Rise of the Tomb Raider. Will you buy it when it eventually comes to PlayStation 4, presumably around the 2016 holiday season? Or do you just not care, perhaps because you can't stand Microsoft's role in all of this?

Open world can means different things to many. In a FF the franchise has always been narrative driven with tightly bound areas to explore to progress the story. Yes, it opens up to being open world like when one gets an airship or something but it really isn't the same thing as how games like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, GTA, and RDR defined "open world"
The term open world didn't really exist until they defined it with said franchises.
Because if we start thinking open world only means eventually going anywhere whenever you want during the end game then games like MGSX, resident evil, Metroidvania's, and Metroids must be considered open world as well. I think that would be misleading.

I'll let Tomb Raider land and then when the millions of unsold copies stack up and go for $40 I'll get it from ebay or something. F8ckers.

They should sell it to us new for that much on day one after the anal rape they committed.
