Have We Seen Any Instant Classics So Far This Generation?

There are some games that you play and you say to yourself, "This is an immediate classic. I'm going to remember this for a long time."

Now, of course, we're not always right about that first impression. We can't predict exactly how we'll remember a certain game, no matter how good it is when we first play it.

That being said, has any title thus far this generation dropped your jaw? Have we seen a game that would qualify as an "instant classic?" Obviously, we can't count remasters and remakes, so games like The Last Of Us: Remastered and the recently released PS4 edition of Journey don't qualify. It has to be new and never-before seen, and it needs to have that special something that sets it apart from the crowd.

For some, it's the PlayStation 4 exclusive Bloodborne while for others, it might be the hugely expansive The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (despite the preponderance of bugs and glitches). But I get the distinct feeling that many will say, "nope, haven't seen that 'instant classic' yet." Maybe that's because it hasn't happened and we're still waiting... If you are waiting, which title do you think will be the first to instill in you that feeling of awe and wonder?

not yet, but i think there are a few games coming up that are showing promise. Fallout 4, mgsv, and even the new sw: battlefront (although i feel they could have made it better if they added a few features such as space to ground battles, iron sites, and more without DLC...) but only time will tell. Perhaps we'll be surprised in the future.

I think Bloodborne is an instant classic and I havnt even played it yet. I think Destiny fits the bill to despite by complaints about it. Destiny will be around for a long time because of its instant success.

Bloodborne.

Dying Light may have a fanbase community now, but its not enough to make it a classic in my book.

I feel like dying light may qualify as a cult classic though.

Maybe, but I can't help but feel that no matter how good the game is it would be way better if it weren't cross-gen. Either they're different games, or the previous gen one is holding back the current gen one.

Sorta depends on how one defines instant classic. If it means critically acclaimed and sold well then it's easily Bloodborne and Witcher 3. There's too many mixed views about the batmobile in BAtman AK for it to be widely considered I think.

EDIT: cross gen games like AC4 Black Flag should definitely be considered instant classic.

Don't care what anyone says, Order 1886 was an instant classic for me. (After I played it anyway). Transistor might be too. Oh and Geometry Wars 3!

Instant Classic means it is something you can already tell is going to be remembered fondly 10-20 years from now when people look back at this generation of gaming.

Also for AK, it's always going to be remembered as one of the worst PC ports ever made (from what I've heard).

Bloodborne, hands down. It's not a perfect game (what is?) but that atmosphere, art direction and gameplay is just... wow. That's going to be a special game to revisit years and years from now.

Bloodborne for sure and then I'm going to go out on the indie limb and say transistor. I'm not a gigantic fan of parts of its combat system, but I just really like the concept and art direction and the story. P.t. was just a demo, but I think people are going to talk about it for a few years at least; so I'll give it the classic badge too.

P.T. will be a classic legend. The days when horror greatness might have reigned. So I keep it on my hard drive for posterity.

Bloodbourne. What it does with minimalist touches becomes even more apparent when playing much more elaborate and extravagant games (kind of like Journey in that regard i suppose). I also believe Arkham Knight, while receiving wide critical acclaim, has understated quality, and the imbalance of batmobile playtime has been overstated, but to each his own. Upgrade the batmobile early, and utilize the skills and weapon enhancements (like distraction shots, and drone hijacking), and it actually can be very enjoyable. Something always grabs my attention with each sitdown, whether it is some level of texture detail unseen before in gaming, some subtle but innovative real time in-game cinematics, or something else. Though, Bloodbourne is my favorite so far, Arkham Knight I think is the first full blown next-gen game as far as technical achievements go. I'll have to get Witcher 3 on pc at some point. I figured a game with a heavy action side to it required a more fluid frame rate for the combat.
