Ubisoft Predicts Big Things From The Next-Gen Consoles

Things could really pick up in the next generation, if Ubisoft's predictions come true.

The publisher revealed their plans for E3 and as part of that announcement, CEO Yves Guillemot stated his high expectations for the future. In fact, he believes that it will be a "pivotal moment for the video game industry," and next-gen hardware sales could really surge.

Based on past market trends and their own internal estimations, Ubisoft believes that within two years, the next-gen console user base could be double that of the current generation (in the same amount of time). The publisher wants to capitalize on this by utilizing "cross-studio collaboration." We have no idea how many units the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will sell, but it seems possible that both could sell relatively well in the first couple of years. Well, provided Microsoft somehow picks up the pieces of their unveiling event last week. They need to fix things first.

We'd also need to see a serious uptick in Wii U sales, wouldn't we?

I think PS4 is going to do very well because it is focused on gaming, even all the nicknacks and paddywacks of social stuff are still basically a focus on the games. It's a living room PC for gaming and it does other stuff so that could spell big success.

Wii U is sort of done with and will be forced to limp along. Xbox One is going to have to fool a lot of people into thinking they don't already have a cell phone/pc/laptop/tablet/cable box etc to make those kinds of sales. We sort of already have enough boxes that do media stuff for us, making it so you can switch between them quickly isn't going to wow anybody.

Well to have the full Xbox experience. You need 3 different devices. Which ruins their "one box to rule them all" thing.

Probably more than that actually.

Unfortunately, I feel the xbox one will sell more than we're thinking/hoping. I think I'm pretty smart and wouldn't buy an xbox now, but when I was 13, I wasn't. All those kids and their cod bs are going to have mommy buy them the next xbox. I would love to be TOTALLY wrong though.

You Stay Classy PSX...

World--

I'm not so sure that big X1 sales are guaranteed. Both Nintendo and Sony know how possible it is to go from first to last place in the console market in a single generation. Microsoft may be about to experience the same thing. "Too big to fail" doesn't apply in the world of consoles (if it indeed applies anywhere).

And it's not like Microsoft isn't capable of laying a huge egg in the marketplace.

We'll see, all the PS4 games unveiled looks pretty awesome indeed.
Though kinda disappointed at the graphic of KZ:SF.
It a next-gen game but the graphic leap from KZ3 ain't that much.

yea, good luck with the double install base within 2 years.
ill be surprised if the install base for ps4, wiiu and xbox one is the same than the ps3, 360 and wii within the same 2 year time frame, let alone higher, let alone double!
speaking to people i just dont see and hear the excitement and enthusiasm i saw when this generation was entering.
when the ps3 and 360 released everyone was so excited to see what they could do, all the new possibilities.
now its eh, so what, that means shinier worlds?
oh joy, said sarcastically.
even the owner of my local EB who im really good friends with couldent care less.
bit of a concern when the future of your business rides on something you couldent give a flying f*ck about!!!!!

Your comments are consistently negative. If new hardware pisses you off and if you think the next gen only holds the promise of "shinier worlds", you really should consider finding a new hobby.

Well, he is right in a sense. Both systems have shown what they can do with new tech, but zero in terms of enhanced gameplay. As for the two games we've seen that are exclusively next gen, Killzone looks like the same gameplay, only slightly prettier. And Knack? Come on, that gameplay looks PS1 era. Wonderful 101 makes that game seem pedestrian and that's on considerably weaker hardware. I'm not saying this is indicative of the next gen, but, nothing they've said or shown makes these systems an incredible leap ahead of what's available now. Consider that, inevitable price drops, and an amazing current gen lineup for X mas, why would anyone think these systems are going to explode out of the gate?

So they're expecting the PS4 and the X1 to sell... roughly 40 million consoles a year apiece?

This on top of Microsoft's estimate that this generation will see more than a billion console sales, which exceeds the combined total sales of all consoles in history, ever.

Either I'm missing something in the marketplace that justifies these extraordinary predictions, or we've got some seriously deluded executives out there right now.

MS also thought they'd shift more copies of FFXIII back when we thought it would be good.

No, wait... 40 million a year would only slightly exceed the current user base in 2 years. They said double. That's close to 80 million a year for both the PS4 and the X1.

The mind boggles.

I don't suppose they think the WiiU is going to suddenly sell 100 million a year to exceed its predecessor. Where are these projections coming from?

You're reading it wrong.

He's talking about the first two years of the PS4/XBO doing double the sales of the XB360 and PS3's first two years. Which might not be that far fetched given at the very least the PS4 is going to be significantly less than the PS3 and games are going to be coming out quicker.

I think a whole hell of a lot of people will buy the Xbox One, but I don't think America is even ready for it. Budget cuts and congressional austerity have infrastructure going nowhere. Broadband coverage is terrible here everywhere but at city hubs. This system does so much that depends on infrastructure working in a country where it is just constantly not working.

Did i misunderstand the article? I thought they meant double the sales in 2 years compared to this gen's systems after 2 years..
