Guerrilla: Here's Why There Are No Guns In Horizon: Zero Dawn

It turned lots of heads during Sony's unbelievable E3 2015 press conference and the more we hear about Horizon: Zero Dawn, the more promising it sounds.

There's still lots to learn but this open-world action/RPG is going to have a boatload of personality, and its originality should shine through as well.

In the latest Edge issue (as cited by GamesRadar), Guerrilla game director Mathijs de Jonge spoke about passing on the concept of guns in the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive:

"What we saw with these prototypes was that as soon as you give someone a machine gun, it’s just spray and pray. It just becomes a cover shooter. We wanted the player to feel primitive, so we decided that the tribes would have very limited knowledge of technology. They don’t understand what’s going on with these machines, or how they work."

To drive this point home, Guerrilla showed Edge a four-year-old prototype of a Killzone 3 character model battling an early version of the Thunderjaw (that awesome beast we saw in the Horizon E3 demo), and that prototype featured a machine gun as opposed to a bow and arrow. It just didn't work out, as the machine gun nullified a lot of the beast's power.

I think the approach is sound and really, not every major new game needs to have guns. Horizon: Zero Dawn could be an absolute masterpiece; I have lots of faith in this development team.

I agree that not every game needs guns, but if they were to have them in it you would simply retool the defensive and offensive aspects/buffs of the enemies to get players to use other weapons.

Guns can be in a game but not be the dominant weapon it just requires incentives from the devs i.e. Mirrors Edge trophy for beating the game without using a gun.

And i'm sorry but after refreshing my memory by watching the trailer again i feel they put their foot in their mouth. "They don't understand whats going on with these machines" yet there somehow smart enough to shoot of a weapons platform and figure out how to shoot it while under pressure, and in the meantime cannot figure out how a simple firearm works, i call bs.

You're thinking along the same lines I am. I like that they're going for no guns, but a more believable reason would be welcome. Like maybe they can't get proper penetration because they don't have the resources to produce strong, smaller munitions so they just make them bigger and shoot them from a bow because utilizing ballistics for that large of an object would be too cumbersome. Something like that. Guerrilla can be pretty bad about glazing over dinner details. I'd like to see that change.

Cavemen could build guns if we gave them a giant machine dinosaur?

Interestingly, the original Mirror's Edge prototype had no guns available to the player. Sooomeone forced them in because they thought that every game needs guns to be appealing *cough*EA*cough*

The Mirror's Edge reboot with no guns is a return to the original vision that the designers wanted to create.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Guns in games are boring.

What is Guerrilla Games consistently well known for? Bar-raising, immersive visuals and technical design? Check. Solid gameplay check. Engrossing narrative and character development? Nope. I hope that changes, though.

maybe not character development but I thought Killzone 2 had unusually good story/narrative for being a shooter at least, most cutscenes were enjoyable to look & listen to etc, at least from the Helghast perspective & Visari, maybe not as much the ISA and the sometimes annoying 4-man-buff-team you're playing with..

I agree. The story does tend to reel you in. And some of the voice acting talent is exceptional. Problem is the characters tend to fall flat, and the stories tend to go out with whimper rather than a bang.

I don't have a problem with the prominence of guns in video games, provided it's handled with care. But I definitely appreciate when developers push themselves to get more creative by going without.

Guns, unless ammo is withheld for suvival horror purposes, making everything a spray n pray game. We have those and they are fun but I'd rather try this new hunting thing.

It's called innovation.

thats actually a really good angle to go with i think mixes things up a bit and yeah, quoting ben here below i could work really well.

yeah i would agree with pritty much all of that, and it could really be a fantastic game.

I hope they have knives or swords that way I can try to take down a big ass mechanical T Rex after tripping it up with a trap or something. Kinda like an AT-AT as I hop on it's back Shadow of the Colossus style.
