Ubisoft's The Crew Looking To Challenge Gran Turismo And Forza?

Ubisoft may have a hot new racing IP, and they could reveal it in a few weeks at E3.

According to The Examiner citing Jeuxvideo and Futura-Techno, a game called "The Crew" is currently in development at French studio Ivory Tower, which is conveniently comprised of former Eden Games employees.

It seems this new IP will be another cross-generation title, as it could be slated for both the current set of consoles as well as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In checking the developer's website, we find a variety of open positions, including a senior gameplay programmer who will work with "next generation technologies." Other reports say "The Crew" will be a simulator, so it will compete against the likes of Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport.

The staff has experience with all sorts of racing games, including Need for Speed and Test Drive, so these should be the guys to do it. We're just wondering how a multiplatform simulator will compete against the exclusive GT and Forza franchises... I'm not talking about sales, of course; I'm talking about quality, which is always critical for simulators.

I tend to believe that a good game is a great thing but with Gran Turismo, Forza, Drive Club and now this, how many driving games is too many?

Bold move by Ubisoft, no doubt, but if there isn't going to be another Test Drive or Driver game to go alongside this, technically the amount of racing games are still the same. It's not like Ubisoft never made a racing game. They simply chose this over Test Drive or Driver to start then next generation cycle.

Not an easy genre to do. Need for Speed Shift tried this attempt, even with a known sim developer that is SimBim, and it's not exactly a total success, particularly in authenticity. You either reach that level of elitism, or it would just be another arcade or semi-sim game, and that's an area where most racing games already lie. If the guys behind this have done nothing but Test Drive, I won't feel too confident about it.

Good. I want racers to stay alive and well. Anyone excited for Grid 2? It looks pretty slick.

Playing it now ....and it is slick.

Although it seems a little unfinished somehow.

Ubi wants to be a Juggernaut that steps into the super big leagues when Activision collapses under the weight of a dying CoD. You need a racing franchise to do that. Good risk.

One day when I can afford a wheel I'll get into certain driving games, but I can't deal with it now.

We like to think of them as huge, but CoD has become their main property for consoles on which all success depends, looking into the future I see that as a shaky foundation to maintain a house on.

I've never played Forza, but I have played Gran Turismo and picking Polyphony Digital as your competition is not something to take lightly. I believe there is some awesome talent out there and PD happens to be sitting at the top of the list.

oooooo, test drive?
so this will be the spiritual successor to test drive?
always wanted another test drive game, shame the last one was so god dam buggy and unfinished!
IF this is a open world sim than sweet, this could do really well if the polish and quality and attention of detail is there.
if not, if its just another track sim i cant see it doing so well.
dunno where but i remember hearing the guys who did driver SF are doing this, hope not we NEED another driver game!
