5 New Pieces Of Final Fantasy XV Info Gleaned From Gamescom

You've seen the new DAWN trailer but Square Enix didn't stop there.

During their Gamescom 2015 briefing, they unveiled a multitude of fresh Final Fantasy XV details, including story and gameplay info.

Director Hajime Tabata filled us in and here's a breakdown of our favorite points:

1. Everything you saw in that DAWN trailer was taken from in-game footage.

2. Lunafreya (or Luna) will be a very important character; Tabata says: "She's not one of those weak, vulnerable heroines that need protecting. She has her own will and determination, and she has very strong inner strength. She really acts of her own initiative to achieve her goals."

3. We still don't know if airships will be included. Tabata says they're "still looking into it," which tells me the game isn't even remotely closed to finished.

4. The Cross Chain system, which allows Noctis to team up with another party member for joint attacks, won't be the same as what you saw in the Episode Duscae demo. There will be more options for attacks in the final game. Oh, and we're getting yet another demo; Tabata says the team has already finalized the content they plan to include.

5. Tabata claims the villain is going to top all previous villains in the franchise. That includes Sephiroth, Tabata...you're aware of that, right?

Topping Sephiroth isn't hard, because he was just an emo puppet. With the exception of Kefka, and maaaaaybe Seymour, FF villains are for the most part one dimensional in the most boring and cliched ways. Jenova is too weird and vague to even care about, we don't even see the real Ultimecia until the final form of the final boss, Kuja and Brahne are cartoons, Garland's greatest weapon is his ability to bore you to death, Yu Yevon is an Ultimecia retread, the only thing I even remember about Vayne is his name, and I don't even remember that much about XIII's villain because that entire game is best forgotten, save its battle system.

All that said, as easy as it should be for Square to back up their talk, I'm not optimistic. I think this whole game is going to flop. I'm hopping it flops so bad Square is forced to acknowledge that they suck at FF now, and either put the brakes on the franchise or give it to another studio, like Eidos Montreal, to develop future installments.

Don't forget that in VIII Seifer and Edea were stand-ins for the final boss until disc 4

Edea is no longer a villain after disc 2 and even joins your party for awhile. Seifer is just every annoying douchebro you met your freshman year of college.

I maintain that VIII wasn't meant to have a focus on the "villain" like a game like VII was to begin with. The story was more about the main characters battling fate itself, imo. Which is why Ultimecia is more or less irrelevant aside from being the means to an end of conflict. (I felt the real final battle was depicted in the final FMV as opposed to beating the last boss, for example)

What's cliched is the belief that you need a single solitary "villain". Not the existence of one. Seeing Sephiroth as a one dimensional emo villain is part of the problem. He's a puppet of Jenova, a physical manifested representation of what is Cloud and isn't (a sort of underlying father/son type dynamic, if you will) and an interesting depiction of what happens when a character with a personality disorder does when given god-like powers and a reason to be selfish against a purpose he grew up believing was his destiny to serve.

But then I like to evaluate characters far more than plot points.

I mostly agree, especially in regards to VIII. The problem with Sephiroth isn't just that they made him an emo puppet (I was mostly going for brevity), but how it was handled overall.

It's not a big deal for the most part because these games don't ned to rely on the villains for a satisfying story if the main party is fleshed out and their storyline is interesting, but talking up the upcoming villain as if topping previous ones is a big deal strikes me as strange.

I would agree with that. I like breaking down villains like Kefka, but none of them are exactly selling points, imo.

Unless the next CG trailer for the FFVII remake shows Sephiroth turning and walking into flames... That image is probably the only marketable image of a villain for the franchise.

Kuja still my favorite villain in Final Fantasy games. Even with all he did you still feel bad for him towards the end after all is explained. Still hoping for Final Fantasy IX with trophy support on PS4..

So... the first demo was more of a way to sample feedback and encourage Type-O sales?
