If Xbox One Can't Make A Run At PS4 This Fall, Just Give Up

Month after month, PlayStation 4 continues to outsell Xbox One in the U.S. and in most countries around the world. There are a few hiccups here and there (like back in April) but for the most part, this generation has been pretty one-sided so far.

With PS4 surpassing 25 million units in only a year and a half (very PS2-like, believe it or not) and Xbox One coming in at only about 13 million, Sony has a substantial lead. However, if Microsoft is going to close the gap, they have one opportunity: This holiday season.

PS4 doesn't really have any high-profile exclusives to help drive hardware sales this fall; once Uncharted 4: A Thief's End got delayed, I knew Xbox One had an opening. Toss in Halo 5: Guardians, Forza Motorsport 6 and Rise of the Tomb Raider and honestly, Microsoft's console should - by all rights - kick the crap out of the PS4 during the important holiday season. Hell, Xbox One is still cheaper, too. It should be much easier to sell consumers on Xbox One as opposed to PS4, right?

Here's the thing, though: If it doesn't happen, Xbox One may as well just throw in the towel. If it can't take advantage and really create a surge, I can't envision a more opportune moment in the near future. Once we get into 2016 and the PS4 exclusives start to hit hard, I think that system will once again soar. There's also the distinct possibility that the arrival of the Nintendo NX might have a negative impact on Xbox One sales (and PS4 sales, I guess). But no matter what, I don't think there's a better time for Xbox One to stage a comeback.

If that system doesn't pick up some big market share before 2015 is out, this console war is over. Sony wins.

Maybe its just me, but I seem to care a lot less about the "console wars" this generation. I'm glad Sony put out such an awesome console, but at the end of the day all I care about is if I'm having a good time playing games. I'm not too worried about if Xbox is failing or winning.

@JaredRocks
I argee with you but the reason i dont care about the "failboy" Wars is i own both consoles so i can play games like Halo 5, Forza 6 and I dont have to wait a year to play games like rise of the tomb raider

Both consoles are doing well, even if they fail to catch up and lose the war this generation The XB1 is still selling really well. The PS4 is rivaling PS2 in sales even without that top tier exclusive yet.

I think you are on to something.

The 3rd party games coming out this fall are mega hits in their own right. Plus, take a look at all the PS4 Bundles that are sure to come out.

Sony has gotten this far being more expensive and without a huge exclusive and I bet that Sony believes they don't need one either.

Bill makes billions off of the United States government and has many ties within. He has plenty of free cash to fight for many years. Whether he does or not we will see.

I just wish Nintendo and Sega would merge with Sony. But then again without competition we would not get half the stuff we have now.

Gates hasn't been the CEO of MS since 2000 and hasn't been the Chairman of the board since 2006.

Let them[ms] have the holiday season, let them have about 3[?] months in a year and Sony will have the other 9 months,so the gap between them will only grow.
I mean this gen is about 2 years old,all MS can do is damage control in the USA and that's it,imo Sony has allready won[25 mil.-13 mil the gap is very very big].
But also xboxone is doing great, and they keep on pushing[mods/bc/low price]and in the end it's good for us gamers that they do[It's better that Sony has some competition, even if it is MS].

There is no console war. That's a load of BS. With both consoles being so similar this gen and on the lower end of the PC master-race argument, this gen is all about the games. Console war might have got some clicks last gen but it's just tired and played out this gen.

Besides, wasn't PS3 doing what XBONE is doing now (sales wise) when that first came out? I certainly remember all last gen having to hear about how PS3 needed to catch up with the 360 and by the end of the generation it did. We're barely even two years into this new gen and XBONE isn't selling too bad at all. And I think MS are really doing a solid job re-building the XBOX brand after it's disastrous XBONE introduction to the world.

So no, XBONE don't have to win anything this Christmas. Both consoles are doing their own thing and there's room for both. And when Nintendo release their new console there'll be room for that too.

It's a marathon not a sprint in the life span of console gaming and everyone wins.

(Except maybe PC gamers having to put up with games built around the inferior spec'd games built around consoles. But they get to buy their games cheaper so it all works out in the end).

No, 360 was more cheaper than PS3, it was when Sony dropped the price and started to get good exclusives when it catch with the 360, also it had Blu-ray and was a more powerful console, XB1 already drop in price and isn't more powerful than the PS4 or offers something new like Blu Ray was on those days, the only way they can beat Sony it's if they release a lot of good exclusives and I really doubt that gonna happen.

The XB1 even with being cheaper gets less quality multis and this it's the gen of the multi's, Sony just beat them with no chance to recover (just wait to see what happens when the PS4 drops in price too), even the biggest MS fanboys I know are buying PS4's this year.

The only good thing MS has it's a pseudo-backwards at the end of this year that gonna eat your HD, better buy a pair of externals if you plan to get those 360 games on your XB1.

Unlikely, it's painfully obvious the X1 can't catch up anymore though that doesn't mean the X1 will die, it can't catch up but it would sell.
Just look at the PSP, it can't win against the DS but it is by no means a failure after selling 80 million units.

"Phil Spencer: I honestly don't goal the team on how many units Sony sells. I think about what we're going to do, and how many Xbox customers we have across 360, Xbox One and Windows - thinking about the combined community of people on Xbox and playing those games, and that number's never been bigger."

I'll be surprised if XB1 doesn't win the holiday season. But I don't care much, either way.
