Who Would Be Your Dynamic Development Duo?

Holmes and Watson, Frodo and Sam, Han Solo and Chewbacca; the world of entertainment is full of fantastic duos.

Every now and then game developers have each other's backs too. Square-Enix and Tri-Ace brought us a pretty solid Star Ocean this generation. Platinum Games picked up and dusted off Metal Gear Rising for Kojima Productions and delivered a great action title. I couldn't help but notice the marked improvement in the storytelling of inFamous 2 after Sucker Punch got an assist from Naughty Dog. So why don't we see more developers teaming up for epic productions?

Each developer tends to be big enough to handle one game at a time, maybe two at the most, and they have big obligations to publishers along with complicated contracts. So maybe having a pipe dream is just for fun. Most of the time we hear about a game and which developer will be attached to the project and then we proceed to make exciting assumptions based on what we know about the developers (if we know anything about them).

Sometimes though, it's more fun to think about what a dream team might be able to achieve. In some ways it seems that certain developers could just complement each other so well that it's a crime there are so many barriers to collaboration. That's why we'd like to hear about who your dynamic duo would be and what they would produce.

In the shooter universe maybe Call of Duty could really get a boost from a single title made by the collaboration of Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Or perhaps you'd like to see Insomniac and Guerrilla Games engineer the triumphant return of Resistance on PS4. (Actually I wouldn't mind GG teaching Crytek a thing or two about AI while merging awesome graphical capabilities.)

Where RPGs are concerned I know I'd love to see Level 5 hook up with Namco Tales Studio for a return to the Rogue Galaxy universe. Or perhaps Bethesda and Bioware could find a way to create an open world RPG with a strong overarching story.

Or maybe you're a racing junkie and want to mix the best of the Burnout and Need For Speed worlds.

Personally I think the creator of Dishonored, Arkane Studios, could achieve something completely amazing if they could somehow work with Bioshock's Irrational Games. I also kind of like the idea of Insomniac coming back to Sony after the Fuse ...situation... for a project with Naughty Dog that brings third person action to new heights.

The ultimate combo for me is literally impossible, it would be Squaresoft from about 1997 and the team at Konami who made Suikoden V in 2006. It would be an unstoppable Frankenstein of Final Fantasy and Suikoden that would redefine turn-based combat and make everyone cry about every 15 hours :)

Who do you think would make the ultimate dynamic developing duo? What might they make?

Related Game(s): inFamous 2, Final Fantasy, Suikoden V, Call of Duty, Resistance, Dishonored, Bioshock

I'm gonna go with ones that already happened. Level 5 and square enix but for final fantasy instead of dragon quest, tho dragon quest would be fine too. And Bethesda and obsidian again cuz new Vegas is blowing my socks off right now and I want a sequel. Throwing darts at a dartboard I wanna say: kojipro and naughty dog.

Guerrilla Games and Quantic Dream should team up and make a killzone game that's part movie and part FPS. More specifically a Killzone prequel. Then they can go deep into the story of the Killzone universe and show everyone exactly what went down. GG put up a really important back story explaining the beef between the Helghast and other colonies. Let us play as Helghast and ISA. Guerrilla Games handle the gameplay, Quantic Dream handle the cut scenes.

American McGee and Insomniac should work together to make an Alice game. Let American McGee handle the story and art while Insomniac gets in touch with their platforming roots and use their well developed shooter skills to create fun gameplay, the only thing Alice needs to be a 10 in my book.

This is just pure having fun with this thought, but a Bethesda team thats on their A game and Gearbox. Bethesda creates an open world in a way that draws every persin into exploring every aspect and always deep and rich with amazement. Where Gearbox does co-op and fun like no one else. What Gearbox has done with Borderlands is amazing. I dont play many games more than once through and I havnt put Borderlands down since I bought it.

Combining the huge open world experience and leveling of Bethesda with Gearbox way of incorporating co-op and managing to create something that never gets old... yea thats what I want.

That would be fun.

I'm going to be the oddball one here, but if I'm to pick a duo, I say PD and Kojima Pro... lol. Don't get me wrong though, I don't want a racing game out of this duo, but they are both on a whole 'nother level in terms of Japanese Production in video games imo. I've seen enough stuff from Western Developers, and I'd like to see Kazunori Yamauchi's vision outside of cars (which he has hinted before), and with Kojima alongside, I think we'd be up for a very unique experience.

That said, I think the talents behind PD are very much underrated. People often say Naughty Dog and Quantic Dream are the ones really pushing the PS3's power, but I personally think PD have one upped them in this regard. As for Kojima, same thing with the Fox Engine. With great minds and talented developement teams, it makes for a good combination.

Quantic Dream is an honorable mention for me. Their vision are essential in the video game industry, but just in terms of what I like to play, I would have to put them aside because they're really on a league of their own. I'm not sure pairing them up with anybody can be a good thing or whether if it would even work.

"perhaps Bethesda and Bioware could find a way to create an open world RPG with a strong overarching story" - this combo was obviously my first thought. It'd be insanely interesting to see the result of such a collaboration.

But other great combos, let's see... How about Crytek and Eidos Montreal? A Deus Ex/Crysis merge could be utterly spectacular.

But above all I would love to see a collaboration between Naughty Dog and... Pretty much any other developer that creates games with a storyline.
Just to see what *else* Naughty Dog can create, other than their very strict way of telling a story. What could come out of that? I have no idea. The end result could easily be bland (there's something about sticking to what you know), but it could also set the bar for others to follow in *other* areas than their trademark linear story-telling.

When a company like ND is continually setting the bar in terms of overall quality, they dont need to justify going outside their normal zone. But they will have released 4 games this generation 3 of which are in the same franchise. They really havn't uad the opportunity to try anything else.

It probably wont ever happen but if it did, im certain they would tell a story iin an open world like no one else has achieved.

No of course - with their success they don't *need* to do anything different. I would just love to see that happen, is all. This is a "what if..." scenario, remember?

But from the reviews of The Last Of Us I've read so far it seems to me to indicate that indeed they *have* expanded on their formula, and for that I salute them.

developers, id be interesting to see a open world simulator racing game with the destruction and jumps criterions been famous for with burnout.
that would be the perfect game!
games though id love to see insomniac work on the mercenaries series.
fuse is the perfect foundation for that game, quirky weapons, zany humours characters, 4 player co-op.
insomniac and mercenaries, a mach made in heaven!

Bethesda and Naughty Dog for me. A world of Bethesda with the technical perfection of Naughty dog. Both have awesome stories, music, combat systems, etc. Though I'm not a fan of FPSs, Kojima/Irrational and Guerrilla could make an excellent FPS with an unsurpassed story.

Just to be a little different, I'll go with Rocksteady and Ninja Theory. Ninja Theory seems to have something holding them back from success -- it's hard for me to pin down what it is, but I get the feeling that Rocksteady could help them solve it.

And Rocksteady has excellent storytelling and design mechanics, but doesn't have terribly strong character animations for capturing a wide emotional range. I think that element could take their games up a notch.

bioware, naughty dogs, take two, quantics dreams, and bungie are among the top for me. They would join forces to make a great mmorpg/fps or 3rd person title. That would boast a great storyline with depth & emotional moments. Awesome graphics and game mechanics that would redefine the gaming
