Bethesda: The Doom Brand Lacks That Recognition Factor

We oldsters will always say Doom is iconic, even legendary.

But because we haven't seen a new entry in almost a decade, the brand's recognition has slipped, and Bethesda believes this will be a definite hurdle for their upcoming reboot.

In speaking to MCV, Bethesda marketing boss Pete Hines noted the following:

"Your average first-person shooter gamer does not list Doom amongst his or her favorite or most beloved first-person shooters, because there hasn’t been one for a decade. Doom is fast-paced, very visceral, and sort of incentivizes you to be aggressive. If you are low on health, the best way to stay alive is to find a demon and kill. If you stop taking fire for a little bit, your health doesn't go back up."

In order to deal with this issue, Bethesda will roll out a bunch of marketing campaigns and events. He added: "If nobody knows about it, it's like a tree falling in a forest while nobody is around." Isn't it odd that a franchise like Doom faces this obstacle? To those of us of a certain age, it's almost conceivable.

The Doom reboot is slated to launch in the spring of PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Now i know this new Doom sticks to its roots as a corridor shooter which is great to the original fans, but i actually really like Doom 3 and how the pace of the game was :( It added to the horror and the scares when they popped up out of nowhere. Can anyone suggest similar games to Doom 3? I have played all the Dead Space ones already.

FEAR 1 and 2 were great. F3AR was more on the casual side. I love F3AR to death, but its definitely easier as you have regenerative hp and less progressive AI. Something FEAR 1 was known for, and thats its AI. I seriously reccomend checking out Fear and Fear 2. Fear 3 if you enjoy fast paced fun shooting games.

Doom 3 was good initially for all the reasons you mentioned, but I couldn't help but get bored after a while and pray for it to end.

It went on too long and got too repetitive. You knew a monster would pop out of a stupid place like a cupboard so you ended up walking backwards ready to shoot it when it did, all the while hoping the next dreary dull corner was the end of the game.

I like corridor shooters so long as something exciting and new is always happening, but if that something has been copy pasted over and over, then their idea of "happening" gets dulled.

Actually they said they'd open it up more than D3 since Doom typically opened into much bigger outdoor levels after the first episode.

FEAR needs to return.

they are right the DOOM name has been out of the game for awhile so they do need to bring the DOOM name back into the publics news/info waves and that it gets the traction it deserves.

happy gaming
