Can Any Game Compete With MGSV For Game Of The Year?

Many are saying it's the hands-down winner, and they're convinced no other game - even ones that aren't out yet - will be able to touch Kojima's latest masterpiece in the 2015 Game of the Year race.

But is that really true?

Well, so far, from a statistical standpoint, it is. Currently, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain holds a 95 average at Metacritic, the highest average for any game this year (not counting remasters, HD upgrades, and various re-releases). Only Bloodborne and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are close, as both hold a 92 average.

At this point, many would put Batman: Arkham Knight in the running as well. Looking down the road, perhaps the only game capable of going toe-to-toe with MGSV is the hotly anticipated Fallout 4; historically, this series has scored off the charts (with the exception of the merely average Fallout: New Vegas). Other big titles include Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Star Wars: Battlefront, Mad Max, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Need for Speed and Just Cause 3. But it's unlikely that any will score in the mid-90s.

But here's the more interesting question: In your mind, which will be most deserving of the best overall game of 2015? Will it indeed be MGSV? Or will you retain a very soft spot for the likes of Bloodborne, The Witcher 3 and Batman? Can we really say the new MGS has this prestigious award all locked up?

Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 will probably be its main competition. Arkham Knight doesn't deserve it. It's a great game in theory, but between the misleading marketing because their grand mystery was obvious to every batman fan on the planet, and the absolutely shameful pc port, it really doesn't deserve to be considered, in my opinion.

depending on how it turns out upon its release, i think fallout 4 could have the edge in terms of what would be MGSV's main competition.

Also 5 days to go people!!!

Once I play MGSV I'm sure it will make me reconsider, but I have to go with Bloodborne. And I really don't think anything will top that experience for me this year, even considering how awesome this year is turning out.

Fallout 4 could end up making it a three-way race for me, personally. We'll see...

Oh, and I spaced out completely on Persona 5! I know it's a somewhat niche title for the mainstream sites to pick (especially in a year with as much quality as this one), but for my personal GOY it will most definitely be in the running...

I look forward to Kojima taking top honors, slaying 'next-gen' experiences like Batman, Bloodborne, Witcher, Fall Out, and Devil's Third with a cross-gen game.

Fallout 4 will get the majority of GOTY votes from the media, I'm almost certain. Unless of course it turns out terrible (very unlikely). I imagine MGS will get a considerable amount of GOTY winnings as well. At this point there's not just one GOTY winner because every gaming media outlet has one.

'Fallout 4' is definitely going to give it the most competition, but the reviews for 'The Phantom Pain' so far make it seem like topping that will be difficult for any game. 'Fallout' has more mainstream appeal, but 'Metal Gear' is (historically) far more technically proficient than the former.

Fallout 4 is going to win. I don't know why this is even a question.

Dishonored Definitive is my GOTY though. Well...crap. Bloodborne. Whatever. Until Dawn is great too.

Nothing for me. However after a very drab year for releases it looks like it's finally getting interesting. Beyond The Phantom Pain you have. Fallout 4, Until Dawn and Star Wars Battlefront . All games interest me and I'll be picking the up (apart from Fallout 4 as I'm waiting for the DLC edition next year). But nothing will surpass The Phantom Pain, it's going to be such an experience... Gosh only 4 days now :)

I just think they're all winners, Ben. Seriously though, if Fallout doesn't beat it, I don't know what will.

i have to say my first thought was fallout 4 but bloodbourne, the witch 3 and batman i think will probably be close between them.

and to a lesser extent Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Star Wars: Battlefront, Mad Max, and Just Cause 3.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Need for Speed are really not contenders to me they are prestigise enough for GOTY no affense they came out all the time, yeah i like AC better personally if haven't read between lines already.

you really want one of those games that comes out one every so often hence why i say fallout 4 but bloodbourne, the witch 3 and batman will be the front runners so far.

thats my 2 cents on GOTY centenders thus far.

happy gaming

The Order is obviously getting game of the year guys :P(just trolling but I did love The Order)

I think it is kind of unfair most GotY games that release closer to the end of the year get picked because they are the most recently played.

However, I think that Bloodborne, the Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 and MGS5 are all great contenders even though we haven't played FO4 yet.

My personal GotY is Bloodborne, everyone here knows I have a dirty soft spot for these games. But on top of that it's level design, and pacing are just so fantastic. I think it deserves it because while it has elements of souls games it is the only title in that list that is technically a new IP.
