Another Industry Analyst Predicts PS4 Will Come In Under $400

Earlier this week, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter said he believes the PlayStation 4 will debut at only $350.

Now, another analyst also thinks Sony's new machine will hold a price tag that is below $400. This time it's Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, who projected the PS4 price in a note to investors today.

Bhatia believes Sony was hurt by launching the PS3 at an "extremely high" price point ($600) and that the company will not make the same mistake again:

"Given that experience, we believe Sony will aim to keep the price point for PlayStation 4 below $400."

However, he added that because the PlayStation Network remains free, the company is missing an opportunity to subsidize the next-gen system via subscription model. Of course, there's always PlayStation Plus, which he might be missing. He also said Sony might stick to the sub-$400 price tag, even if it means losing money on every machine sold.

As for the other manufacturers, Bhatia said Nintendo "is in a tough spot," as if we didn't know that already. Expectations are low but at the end of the day, "never write off Nintendo." Then there's Microsoft's Xbox One...which requires an online connection every 24 hours, and you can only share games with people who have been on your Friends list for 30 days, and you can only do that once. There are many other mandates, restrictions, and requirements for the the console.

It isn't going over well with gamers. And it's going to cost more than the PS4? Okay, sounds like a plan, Microsoft.

If this is true, then we will all be treated with a generation much like the PS2 generation where everyone had Sony's console and microsofts console was completely out of sight... Sounds like a dream.

I miss those days. :)

My plan has always been to buy a console only when a must-own exclusive is released, and even though I'm sure one will eventually be released for the PlayStation 4, if they do indeed launch the system at $400 or less, that's it. I'm sold right there.
It's obviously still very early, but this is definitely looking to be the most one-sided generation I've yet to experience. Every generation prior, I have slowly but surely purchased all the then-current generation consoles. But right now, nothing on the Wii U or Xbox One has sold me. Sony had better do right by us with this position they now hold.

There is no way the PS4 will cost more than $400, with AMD's APUs being really cheap (compared to an Intel's equivalent). The only reason I see the PS4 costing more than that is if it came bundled with something or it being a "Premium" model.

With all this momentum, Sony may as well just already unlocked the "Generation in the Bag" platinum trophy.

BTW Ben, I expect to see an unboxing on the PSXE Youtube channel. That thing is starting to get cobwebs already hehehe just saying.

I agree and have thought this for a long time now. The models will be as follows:

PS4 Basic 500GB HDD - $399
PS4 Deluxe 1TB HDD and PSEye - $499

Completely reasonable prices for a console that seriously will play everything under the sun.

Lets examine the facts that are available thus far, shall we?

1 - The PS3 has surpassed the 360 in global sales and despite coming out a year after the Xbox.

2 - Sony has done everything right in terms of making the PS4 an attractive and affordable asset for developers.

3 - The XBone has shot itself in the foot with a 24 hour or else procedure that frankly shocks me.

4 - The PS4 is rumored to be under $400.00 and if true, the PS3 launch debacle will be erased.

I can't help but feel that Sony is on the verge market domination PS2 style.

Look at how they're dancing around the issue of used games, loans and rentals. They're not doing much of anything right; they've even cancelled the one on one interviews with the execs that would have followed the E3 conference. On second thought, that last one might have been the only smart thing they've done in the last month given the mixed signals that came from the Xbone reveal.

You are absolutely correct Kryten1029a. The cancellation of some press events by MS kind of shows me that they lack some confidence.

It also shows me that MS has some supreme arrogance.

I think they cancelled the post conference interviews because they (MS/Xbox) won't be able to control the message. Given the community reaction over the past week and especially with the "clarification" yesterday (which posed even more questions), I'm sure they felt that the media wouldn't be asking the questions that they want to be answering.

I think they also stated that MS will come out with an economy Xbox One lower than Sony. A more TV/Movie/Music oriented console with possibly a smaller hard drive. Might be cheaper without the Kinect but Kinect is 100% required for this gen due to MS commitment to voice and motion control without a remote or controller.

Whether has something similar planned who knows. Not sure where Sony could cut back and hard drives really are not the expensive these days. Would be interesting if Sony would consider adding a free 1 yoear membership to PS Plus with every purchase for up and until Xmas. Granted not sure whats going to be in the PS Store for the PS4 on launch.

There are definitely going to be some surprising reveals at E3.

Lets see how long this ride is going to be.

Keep Playing!

I think it will, probably, come out at 399. I think that is what I paid for the original Playstation. I was so excited to get it too.

But if this system comes out at 350 or lower, (Especially 299), Sony will rule the damn gaming world with an iron fist.

I just hope they don't surprise us with some kind of optional DRM for gaming companies like MS.

End of line.

Well, if you think about it, PS2 and the PS1 released at $300? AT the time, they had current tech DVD and CD respectively. Now that blu-ray is current tech and no longer the new thing, the price will solely be based on the gpu and cpu amongst other hardware stuff like HDD, and they're all relatively cheap. I don't see under $400 to be unlikely. It's just a matter of whether or not Sony wants to make a lot of $$ straight out of the gate, or go for the long run again by breaking even, or even a loss for every launch units.

Microsoft has been slowly digging the grave for the Xbox One ever since their console reveal.

Most of the damage came post-reveal, with all of the mixed and contradictory messages that the various Microsoft spokespeople gave to journalists over the following days.

And to top it all off, they have been scrambling around trying to do damage control from their own screw ups by backtracking on previously given statements about the Xbox One, and then backtracking on their backtracking.

All of the info about the Xbox One is such a jumbled mess right now that I genuinely have no clue what info is real, speculation/rumor, or false anymore.

I've tried VERY, VERY hard to give MS the benefit of the doubt with this Xbox One, but what the hell are they doing?? When you have your customers saying "Don't do this" you turn to these greedy publishers and say "#&@$ you! These fans have been putting money in our pockets and stuck with us through the worst failure rate of any consumer product ever. They are who we cater to." It's like they are taking the devotion of people who stayed as stupidityand gullibility. I know I stayed because the 360, for the first five years, offered an unmatched GAMING experience. I only had one red ring but MS took care of that, no charge. I do appreciate that but, damn, these restrictions are getting TOO crazy. The reason why I play on consoles over PC is the simplicity. I just want to sit down after a hard day's work and play what I spent my hard earned money on. That's it. What if their servers go down or what if they just get out of the business if Sony and Nintendo trounce them? Can I no longer play the games I plan on investing thousands of dollars in? Screw that!! It pains me because I want to support Remedy and the other devs. I want to get a freaking Crackdown 3 because the Crackdown series is grossly underrated because ill take fun over a forced dramatic story ANY day of the week. But I just can't do it. Now the ball is in Sony's court. Step up and say NO to DRM across the board. I already no Nintendo isn't gonna go for that crap. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the highest pirated console game of all time, fitting for one of the best games of all time, but even they don't care about letting people give friends games. If Sony doesn't step up, I may just have to stick with the Wii U. Hell, maybe even get a gaming PC at least through all that BS, Steam is cheaper for games. A lot cheaper. Freaking sad times to be a gamerĀ

Yeah, no, the 360 was never "unmatched." Unless the only thing you played was Halo, Gears and Forza...all of which are destroyed by Uncharted, Killzone and Gran Turismo. But whatever.

Killzone destroyed Halo?? Hey, Ben, I was a little bummed about the most favorite hobby in my life being hijacked and perverted by greed, but that chuckle felt good.

What part did it destroy? The awesome four player co-op? The non linear fire fights? The awesome level editor.and created game types in Forge? The sheer possibilities of each mp match with the amount of weapons and vehicles at your disposal? Varied enemies, not just guy with Red eyes and sniper rifle and guy worth red eyes and machine gun? I'll give you they managed some fantastic graphics but the game is linear as all get out. So great graphics. Yippee? The game is boring, especially 3. Like I said, I want my games fun. I like the extra effort that Guerrilla put into the story of 3. I still go around saying "This is an OUT. RAGE!" But for game play(the most important thing) Halo leaves it in the dust.

Killzone 2 and 3 had better gunplay than any of the halos combined. Yes, I enjoy halo enough but no way in hell does halo beat killzone in any department. Also, halo is linear as well. Most games are. It isn't an open island like far cry 3, you still go to the same destination and there really aren't any options on how you would want to do sections. Shoot, move, shoot, move like all other fps games.

Give me a break. I played Halo 4; felt like I was back in 2005. It did absolutely nothing new.

Killzone 2 produced an definitive shift in the FPS genre. It gave us realistic weight and heft, enemies with vastly improved AI, and a far more diverse atmosphere than any of the cookie-cutter atmospheres in any Halo. KZ3 tried to be too much like CoD but even that ripped was far more advanced. Oh, and Resistance had VASTLY better stories and weapons that were so unbelievably superior...it's what Insomniac does, after all. No weapon inventory was better than what was in R3, IMO.

But hey, take Halo if you want. And then explain to me how the 360 was "unmatched" when it had to face Uncharted, Heavy Rain, God of War, Gran Turismo, inFamous, Metal Gear Solid 4, Demon's Souls, LittleBigPlanet, MLB: The Show, Journey, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, etc. And now The Last Of Us and the upcoming Beyond. The 360 just got sadder and sadder with every passing year; the PS3...the opposite.

The fun part is that as the years went on, the PS3 outstripped the 360 in every possible genre category. FPS...no, Resistance and Killzone were more than a match for Halo; TPS, no, Uncharted kicked the ass of Gears; sports, no, MLB: The Show was the highest-rated sports franchise of the generation by a long shot; racing, no, I'm sorry, pure racing enthusiasts know that Forza isn't a patch on Gran Turismo, action/adventure; inFamous and R&C vs...uh...not sure the 360 had any exclusive action/adventures. Pure action; no, God of War owned all in that category and again, can't think of any 360 exclusives in that category.

Thrilling drama? Heavy Rain. Innovation? LittleBigPlanet, Journey, Killzone. I'm sorry, but it was never a competition. You were REALLY deprived if you thought the 360 was "unmatched" in gaming. It's too bad, really...you had all of three franchises to play over and over again for five years.

How did that not get boring? I want to play the best of the best; my time is limited. Sticking with the 360 would've meant missing 90% of the best of the best.

@sawoa
Uh..what? You mean, how I can take down a Scarab by driving underneath it taking out its legs with Gauss rifle on the warthog, or jumping from a Hornet right onto the deck, or if I feel really ballsy, I can hijack a chopper or a ghost, find a slanted rock , go full blast and land right onto the deck. No options? No options? lol. Come on!! Killzone is a cover based shooter, which really only works if the enemies are coming from the front. Halo is wide open and meant for you to move and improvise with the weapons and vehicles at your disposal. Not to mention Forge where you can create and share your own maps. Guess that's worthless, too? Ok.... I can agree that the shooting is more satisfying in Killzone 2. I did enjoy the weight the guns had.
@ Ben
Huh? Killzone is so uninspired and made by decent developer who unfortunately doesn't even know how to program vehicles unless they are on linear rails. Killzone's so great but Sony was giving the MP away because the game is so irrelevant in the eyes of PS3 gamers. Innovation? Zero. Thrilling drama? Alan Wake. On the level of Heavy Rain? Hell NO, but definitely a great game in its own right. There's a reason why GT5 rated LOWER than Forza. It was a half, lazy effort from a dev stuck in the PS2 days. They were so stuck in the PS2 days, they even brought 800 cars from the era. lol.

There is a reason why I said 5 years.I probably should tweak that down to about 4 and a half. Why you believe I hadn't owned a PS3 since its launch is a mystery to me. Because I speak highly of one does not mean the other was crap and worthless.I just believe one was a bit better. Before Heavy Rain released I was still firmly leaning towards the 360 but Heavy Rain changed that. There is no a game this gen that I have more adoration for.

Before then, I loved the variety. Dark survial horror in Condemned: Criminal Origins. Quirky fun games like, Fable, Rockstar: Table Tennis, Dead Rising, Earth Defense Force 2017, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Project Sylpeed, Crackdown, Viva Pinata. True Ace Combat in Ace Combat 6, great bloody action in Ninja Gaiden 2. Crazy fun snowboarding in Amped 3. Awesome RPGs in Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, The Last Remnant, Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery, MagnaCarta 2. On top of that XBLA was tremendous. Shadow Complex (you know that big budget 2D game you were searching for?) has more gameplay (about 15 hours worth) and more enjoyable than a game like Flower to me. 'Splosion Man, Trials HD, Castle Crashers, and Ikaruga. You'll notice ALL of these games are between 2005 - 2009. It was just a much better environment for me as a gamer. Now it is TOTALLY changed for me. Sony has hit full stride and has no signs slowing down. I was really looking forward to MS bouncing back, but as I said above, they've gone too far with their limitations with the One and have pretty much turned me off from their new system.

If you're seriously going to put that anemic group of exclusives up against what most all critics and avid gamers consider to be the best of the best, I think we're done here. Viva Pinata? Really?

And that analysis of Killzone is piss-poor, to say the least. There's a reason why most every gamer and critic appreciated it for finally giving us a shooter that looked and FELT real. Not this running around, sliding-on-glass archaic garbage in Halo. Vehicles that can drive around? Ooh...with an environment that is pointless to explore and controls that were always questionable at BEST. The Wraith was always deplorable.

Lastly, please, PLEASE don't embarrass yourself at this site by saying, "oh, the critics loved Forza and GT5 was stuck in the PS2 days." Don't do that. The co-founder of the site, Arnold K., and me, are pretty big car enthusiasts, and we have explained in great detail in the past why game reviewers who are NOT racing and car enthusiasts don't have any business reviewing simulators.

Those who drive, those who know cars, know Forza is a flat-out joke as a simulator. That's why there's GT Academy. That's why people train with the GT simulator to drive in REALITY. That's why the franchise creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, is a professional driver himself. Who created Forza again? You're one of those people who don't even change his own oil and think they can judge a racing simulator, aren't you?

Here, educate yourself-

http://www.psxextreme.com/feature/666.html

And I'm well aware of the XBLA games that were good; I've played most of them. In the realm of exclusives, and I've already proven this three times over, it is...not...close. The best games of the entire generation are PS3 exclusives. In fact, all of the top 5 and maybe even 9 of the top 10 are. Uncharted 2, 3, God of War III, MGS4, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, and The Last Of Us beat absolutely everything ever released on the 360, with the possible exception of Alan Wake, which might fit into the top 10 exclusive list somewhere. Forza is a joke to REAL drivers, Gears gets trounced by Uncharted in every category, and the imaginative Resistance and intensely gritty Killzone...I'll take that any day of the week and twice on Sunday over the absurdly outdated Halo.

Oh, and I find it really amusing that you cite all these mediocre RPGs for the Xbox 360 (with the exception of Lost Odyssey) and completely ignore the ones on PS3. Valkyria Chronicles, the Atelier, Tales of, and White Knight Chronicles games, etc. The Xbox and JRPG vs. PlayStation and JRPG? Are you kidding? My once favorite genre has taken a dive, but I'm not stupid enough to turn to Microsoft for my fix. Good God.

Hey, Viva Pinata is pretty awesome!! lol. I dig that game something fierce. I'll definitely give you Heavy Rain. That's my top of the gen, as well. Uncharted 2 is definitely awesome. More enjoyable than any Gears game, I'll admit. But 3 was 2 in the desert, basically. No advancement whatsoever beyond graphics. And MGS4, a little heavy on the cutscenes and a little disappointed that after Act 3 it was pretty much boss battles with a few hints of infiltration, but an absolute epic, for sure. Haven't played Last of Us yet, but I'm hoping for big things. Can't wait!! But Resistance or Killzone being better than Halo? Not on any level besides, Killzone 2 having the great weighty feel. Maybe they are better than ODST but that's it. And that's a weak maybe. While Forza may be a joke to real drivers, they still produce a better video game. More diverse and fun. What games are supposed to be. And why it's rated higher. That's why you had the Polyphony guys taking notes and playing at the Forza 3 booth. Gotta learn a thing or two from the best. lol.

Those RPGs are all good to really great. None of them are mediocre. The only one I didn't like for the 360 was freaking Blue Dragon. SO easy and WAY too repetitive. I wanted to like it too. I didn't ignore those games for PS3. Valkria Chonicles, Disgaea 3 and 4, Cross Edge, and 3D Dot Game Heroes. I definitely love them and happy to have them in my collection. Hell,I even enjoy the Hyperdimension games for their goofiness. Why do you get so mad, Ben? It's like you get upset when someone like something you deem sucky. It's games, man. We're supposed to be having fun with this.

I don't know about anyone else, but as someone who is essentially rooting for Sony, all this news seems... a little too good. I find it very suspicious. It's almost as if Microsoft is going out of its way to hand Sony victory this coming generation.

I don't want to jinx things by saying that either Microsoft has a -crazy- ace up their sleeve, or Sony will somehow screw things up at the last minute by announcing some stupidly high price (unlikely, but it's not impossible) or unveils some hitherto-unknown practice that pisses people off. But damn... There's so much bad news coming out from Microsoft, and there's generally been nothing but good news from Sony's camp (a lot of which has to do with no news since Sony hasn't said as much as Microsoft has said thus far), that I find myself a bit worried. I fear for an eventual backlash towards Sony for whatever reason.

As for Nintendo, whoever said it was right: NEVER count out Nintendo. Hell, if all goes according to plan, I'll likely have a PS4 and a Wii-U this generation (unless the new Xeno game from Monolith Soft ends up on a non-Nintendo system, though that's extremely unlikely).
