Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Launch Date, Pre-Order Campaign

It might be coming a little earlier than you anticipated and for once, the pre-order information is more entertaining than usual.

Square Enix has announced the launch date for the hotly anticipated Deus Ex: Mankind Divided: February 23, 2016.

Furthermore, the publisher revealed the game's special pre-order bonus campaign, which allows players to choose their own goodies that are available across several tiers. Interestingly, as the total number of global pre-orders rise, more bonuses will be unlocked, hopefully resulting in the ultimate incentive: The ability to play the game four days early.

Mankind Divided, the latest installment in the award-winning franchise, was officially announced back in April and ever since then, fans have been pining for that release date. Well, here ya go.

So, perhaps I'm totally out of touch, but I was satisfied with these pre-order incentives. Dare I even say I was 'impressed'? But when I went to the video, most of the comments are from people just totally trashing this move. I don't understand the backlash at all. Anyone care to explain?

I think "it's the internet" is the best explanation.

Pre-orders suck in general, they're a way for a company to get your money before they've earned it by promising stuff that may or may not be worth anything at all, assuming they even deliver on it. They don't do it because they're swell guys, they do it because it's a lot easier, and cheaper, to hype and market a game than to make an actual good game. It's cheaper to scam people into crowdfunding a game than it is to put up your own dough. If your game sucks, you don't have to worry about anyone who pre-ordered, because by the time they figure that out, you've already got their money.

So that's one good reason to bag on any pre-order, IMO. When you toss in a kickstarter style campaign, and the ultimate 'reward' is playing the game early, it makes you wonder why they don't just release the game four days earlier, and why they're content on having you nag as many of your friends to pre-order as well. This info has been out for a few hours and two people have already asked me if I'm going to pre-order, and when I say no I got "But if enough people do it we can get it early!"

I'd rather wait four days than put up with this kind of horseshit.

yea im kinda with Bio on this one, i usually pre-order my games just so im sure i'll get it as soon as it comes out.

But this seems like a cash grab from them, and the fact that they're locking away another mission just to make sure people pre-order kinda annoys me. And if it'll be ready the 4 days earlier than the release date with pre-orders than im sure it'll be ready without them.

granted im still gonna pre-order it, im just not gonna be happy about it

Think of it this way, it's not so much pick what bonus you want, it's more so pick what content you don't want. I have no doubt all of this pre-order junk will become available down the road for a price, so yippy, content taken out of a game to try and get money from the consumer early before reviews, or down the line for more money. This is an ugly practice and it needs to stop.

Also, if you don't pre-order you lose out on all of it, including an extra mission and the 4 day head start. So they've clearly decided to take out content to try and get people to pre-order, and are also potentially making parts of the web a dangerous place to be if you're trying to avoid spoilers for those 4 days.

Deus Ex isn't the only game to have the optional gameplay now. But they are one of the few to have a story as good the DE series. This deal kind of pre-order deal sets the bar a little higher.

Very excited for this one. They did a good job of keeping it under wraps leading up to last April.

Never pre-order.
That said - this is one of the safer releases to pre-order. :)
