Could Until Dawn Become The Next Great PlayStation Franchise?

We all know the exclusive lineup for PlayStation is a little light this holiday season. Sony has even admitted it.

Sure, we're getting Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Horizon: Zero Dawn and other great exclusives down the road, but I think we need another new IP that could become a successful series for the brand.

Might that IP be the recently released Until Dawn? It has its fair share of problems but the foundation is excellent and developer Supermassive Games really tried to do more with the interactive drama concept. Many claim they even improved on the idea pioneered by the likes of Quantic Dream (Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain) and really, with the entire industry going open-world and by default putting story on the back burner (just look at MGSV), maybe this is a good thing. Maybe Supermassive needs to keep going down this road.

I know there isn't much more to tell concerning the story in Until Dawn, and I understand there are dozens of ways to see it. But what if the next effort was a prequel, perhaps dealing with the events leading up to the disappearance of the two sisters, Hannah and Beth? Or, perhaps get a whole new cast of characters and a whole new story, but keep it within the Until Dawn framework?

I don't know about you but I'd very much enjoy that.

More games in this vein would be great, but I don't think Until Dawn lends itself much to a franchise. Horror works best in one-off stories. The whole plot is in itself the monster to the viewer, the terrifying mystery that isn't fully explained and you just desperately want to escape it. And just like the actual antagonists inside the story, the more of it you see the more it looses its scariness. That's why horror is such a hard genre to pull off and why franchises tend to loose their edge as they go on.

On a more personal point, I would like to see what they can do with other genres, since I can't play horror games myself.

I am loving this game (not quite finished yet)! Not sure I would pay the $60 if not for the fact that I love to support such companies trying something other than the "tried and true" FPS. Heavy Rain is still one of my favorite games.
I don't think this game should have a sequel, per se, but I'm super stoked that this is getting the attention it deserves. More games like it, please.
Developers take notice!!

I can't say I'm interested in this game. But I can think of another Sony property that needs more attention, and hopefully sequels, because the franchise is already great. Media Molecule's Tearaway. Not only has Sony's marketing for this release been nearly non-existent for PS4 (from what I can tell), despite the game being majorly overhauled, and those who've actually played it know it's something special, here it is a week away from release and there's little support from either the press or Sony. I wouldn't be surprised if MM just leaves Sony after this one. They probably aren't happy that their game is receiving little exposure from their parent. Their creation basically got snubbed for being on Vita and here it is trying to be reborn on PS4 and few care. It's destined to release to a short span of praise and then quickly die off, forgotten, eventually handed out as a PS plus freebie.

Err wait. I guess a bunch of reviews started popping up over the last few hours... Lower than the vita's.

Still though....

What they (Sony) are doing to Tearaway PS4 is exactly what they did to Until Dawn. It's a disgrace that they'll pump more energy into games like Destiny, Call of Duty etc... but little to no marketing for their exclusives. Last gen they had everything to fight for, lately they've gone down hill.

You really should play it if you want to experience Playstation's best. Even if you wanna wait for a $20 price it's gooooood.

Yes, I have been saying this for years. I truly believe that the structure of an interactive narrative through the players action/choice is the step forward. Having the player experience the consequene of their actions as the story adapts to it adds such personal investment to the experience. I remember being blown away by Shadow of Memories (Shadow of Destiny for the US) on the PS2 for bveing thefirst game to truly off me this - Plus the games story is fantastic, highly advice it if yuo like these sort of games.

I've got Until Dawn ordered and on the way. It will be taking a seat to The Phantom Pain (Which I finally have!) But I look forward to settling down with it at a later date. Really hoping the choices an actions change web of the story effectively. But your positive response has got me excited :)

I am hoping for more games like Until Dawn, but, personally, I hope it's of a different genre (not horror. maybe, more adventurous/mestery-like)

Well it can't become one without actual sales, thankfully reviews are helping but they basically dropped it unceremoniously as if it were some random digital game.

As for a franchise I doubt it but I'd love it. New plot and place and twist every time though.

I think they should stick with the same formula but do an entirely new story every time, sticking to the horror genre would probably be the smartest move.
