E3 2013: The PlayStation 4 Finally Gets Its Anticipated Unveiling

Yep, there it is.

We all knew Sony would finally unwrap the PlayStation 4 at their E3 2013 press conference, and so they have.

What do you think?

It's a shiny black box, certainly. Maybe gamers will have a better description but I'm a little busy right now; I can't really come up with a more poetic or elaborate description of Sony's new console. It'll be interesting to see what people think of this design, though. I'm one of those people who really don't care much what a system looks like, provided it's not horrifyingly ugly like the GameCube. I mean, that thing made me nauseous when I first saw it. I was actually downright offended.

But I can live with this. How about you?

Will you be able to sync your trophies without being online? You have to be online for the PS3 whenever you pop in a new game and download the game data.

Even Jack Tretton finally said officially the PS4 is far more powerful than the X1 his comment essentially went "I don't like to boast but ask any multiplatform developer which is the most powerful and look at the two game versions side by side the PS4 is obviously the winner."
This should be the full interview.

Not sure about the design.... but it comes in black. :)

I am sure the second version of the console will be somewhat different in the next few years. But its whats under the hood that matters and the games that utilize it.

Hope there is more to come from Sony.

Glad for the gamers and the Sony gaming community.

Keep Playing!

My fat ps3 makes this thing look like I time warped back to 1999. Interesting to see 2 usb ports! I was worried that Sony went the way of proprietary connections! Phew... I'm not pre ordering one until they disclose storage specs. Last gripe is no AC wifi support. D'oh! Lastly, the disc loading slot is well hidden... I hope it lights up so you can actually find it! Hehe...

Overall, I think it looks pleasant. I was shocked to see how similar it is to the xbox.

with you on the new consoles look alike, but a couple things different, just looks...

1-XbOne is bigger..

2-even though they say Kinect is built in its really not, same as the PS eye

3-the Kinect looks like it needs to be sat on a flat over hanging surface

Still a lot of unanswered questions. What size is the hard drive? Is it swappable? How many USB ports? 1 or 2 HDMI ports? Is the PSEye purchased separately (I assume it is)? Is the power supply internal or an external brick? What speed is the BD drive? Do all games have to be fully installed to the hard drive to run? I am sure there are quite a few more.

I understand that the power supply is not going to be discussed at the conference, but I also remember gamers not being happy with the big power brick the XBox 360 had at launch.
I did see this link which shows the PS4 will come with a 500GB drive: http://www.exophase.com/60254/ps4-includes-500gb-hard-drive-dualshock-4-is-60/
No mention if it will be swappable.

The 360 power brick was a tank. I wouldn't be too worried about tank-like power bricks this time though. This low voltage architecture, essentially laptop based processing, is designed to be low energy/heat.

Here is another link statIng that the PS4 will only output video via HDMI (no more composite, component, or s-video), and only has 1 HDMI port: http://gimmegimmegames.com/2013/06/ps4-is-hdmi-only/
I actually know someone who is going to be upset about this. He plays his PS3 on a SD TV. Graphics look really ugly but he manages okay. I couldn't play like that.
Also, looking at the picture of the back, it sure does look like there is a USB port back there. Hard to tell as it is blurry when zoomed in. I hope so as 2 is not enough.

I wish I could find the spec sheet again someone posted it in the Gametrailers twitter stream. I think it was on the .co site which is why it is not coming up in Google but a 500GB replaceable HDD is confirmed, along with 2 USB 3.0 slots, a 6x Blu-ray 8x DVD drive, with a HDMI cable along with a headset being included in the box, and the new PS eye will be sold separately for $59.99.

The best thing IMO (even better than the price, which primarily looks good in relation to the Xboner) is that the PS4 is (apparently) launching with one SKU.

Sure, there will be other models eventually, but minimizing the chance of confusion during the roll-out is key.

"I want a PS4."

"Here you go."

why does everything have to look so cheap and flimsy these days?
oh thats right, because $ony ARE cheap!
and they have the balls to critisize M$s design of the xbox one.
give me that betamax player over this ugly relic of the past any day!
at least the xbox one looks shiny and has a bit of chrome on the disc lip.
at least that does not look like it was designed out of the cheapest flimsiest plastic only american car manufacturers manage to find!

Not a fan of the design. But it's how it works under the hood, really. GameCube wasn't so bad. Didn't need a handle like some kids' toy. But it's compactness was it's greatest feature. It's worst feature, button placement. Reset is least used, should have been in back.
PS4 on end, looks like a thumbdrive. When flat, it looks like it opens up which would be cool, but horrible if it breaks. But it how it plays games that matters most.
