PlayStation 4: No Online Necessary, Used Games Supported

The crowd just went nuts.

Why? Because SCEA president Jack Tretton has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will fully support used games and won't impose any restrictions or limitations, and the system will not be required to be hooked up online to play games.

Tretton did take a little jab by saying we won't have to perform the 24-hour online "check-ins" the Xbox One will require. Furthermore, Tretton also confirmed that current PlayStation Plus subscriptions will indeed carry over into the next generation; if you're already a member, you'll be set for the PS4. And if you hate DRM, you're probably a big fan of what Tretton just said, and you were one of those applauding like mad.

Of course, PlayStation is all about gaming and they continue to prove that with every passing minute. But the show isn't over yet! The only downside is that you need a Plus subscription to play online, which is definitely unfortunate, and bound to get bad press.

I'm a little upset that they made it so that you need a plus membership to play multiplayer, other than that though I've been very happy so far. Loved the little jabs at the Xbox too

Yeah, that was a bit of a letdown from an otherwise wonderful presentation.

You don't expect Sony to place basic stuff like that behind a paywall.

That was a great moment, I'm glad there's no check-in. The internet here in the US is too bad to make those kind of moves. BUT now we have to fear third party DRM measures even if PS4 doesn't require them. In any case first party games won't be lame that way.

I wonder if PS3 will still have online multiplayer free since PS4 won't?

But can it be sold more than once? If I loaned you an Xbone game, you couldn't transfer it to someone else or even give it back to me. I wouldn't want to be the register jockey who has to explain to the customer that they can't trade their game in because it was already resold once.

yes, they're forcing you to buy the Kinect. The hardware is also very much a PC. I have no worries that my PC will run just fine any multiplat for quite some time. THis is sort of nice because I can't afford a PS4 just yet so my PC will bridge that gap quite nicely.

>forcing you to buy a kinect

and the ps4 eye costs so much less why?

All I hope is that I don't require PS+ to access netflix.. If I do get the cash to buy a ps4, it will only be the ps4. Same way I bought the ps3. Buy the console, play demos, save for games.

PS+, although inexpensive, Isn't looking like too much of a possibility for me at $510CAD (including taxes) for the console and plus. I use my buddy's netflix, so that doesn't cost me. If I need to pay the $50 to access something I have access to for free, I'll be a little upset. Then again, unless they carry over the p2p aspect of PS+ to the PS3, I can always just use my ps3. If that changes though, my SNES will have a new room mate.

I admit im surprised on the requirement of ps+ for multi-player but then i look at the added value with at least 1 free title a month plus discounted games to boot access to betas early. i'm also sure that they will put some of that revenue into improving psn. I may not care for Microsoft, but i have to give them credit on the money they invested on live network....lets hope Sony invests as well to surpass MS live. last year i got PS+ and have enjoyed a couple hundred bucks worth of free games and hundreds of dollars on discounted games. so for dollar vs dollar i feel PSN is worth the 60 dollar investment and maybe Sony will stop the online pass crap.

The plus requirement to play online is a really, really sour grape to consume. I would never have expected that, ever.

We should maybe have seen it coming, seeing how they've prepared the market by sweetening up the Plus membership over the last couple of years.

About the PS+ requirement. It's not really that bad, PS+ is pretty cheap and you get some great value. But Sony should look to increase the countries it takes cards from then, the one thing more frustrating than not having the money for something, is having the money but not being able to use it.

Most of what I've heard is quite good. I can see a clear reason behind requiring plus for multiplayer and this ties in with EA saying they're dropping the online pass policy. They don't need to as they'll get a cut of the Plus money.

It would be nice to see the prices be cheaper for some games as multiplayer is funded via Plus membership so Single player fans shouldn't be required to fund that.

Dude, I think the only sheep here is you. The difference between PS+ and Xbox Live are pretty straight forward. You get free games with PS+ and you get basic services with Xbox Live. You think Microsoft would be giving out free games now with Live if it wasn't for PS+? No. It sucks about the requirement of PS+ but it's far better than the garbage restrictions in the Xbox One. I'm sure you don't have a problem with sharing your games seeing that you probably have no friends.

I did not prove your point what-so-ever. I never said that I agreed with putting basic services behind paywalls. I'm already a PS+ subscriber because they offer me games for a yearly fee. I don't like the PS+ requirement but it is the lesser of two evils at this point.

And as far as fanboys go. I can't think of a bigger fanboy than you _______________. I would have bought a Wii U if Sony would have announced the same restrictions as the Xbox One. It was great to see the reaction, but I never thought that playing used games would ever be an issue or see it mention in a conference. Its a shame for anyone who goes out to buy a xbox one that they cant rent out a physical copy or borrow a game from a friend (unless you borrow their console aswell) So many are traded in and are sold on auction sites, don't know how this will effect these game stores. Maybe that their support over 360 that you see most of the time will fade out in favour for PS4 because its still about the money and if a store can make money on used PS4 games and not a penny and xone games what do we think you will see on stock shelves? Imagine those people who spent their hard earned money, saving up for those few games they've always want, finished those games in a week lets say for argument sake. And when they go into their favourite store where they purchased these new games from, they are told there is no trade value what so ever on those games and that no one is willing to buy them. There will be more used xbox one systems for sale in 2014 than new ones I put money on it

I do get that it is better to have a choice but with everything you get from a plus membership it's a really small price to pay.
I LOVE plus , so much that I asked my brother and his gf why they didn't have it yet and they just weren't sure , so I bought them both a membership and added another one for myself ( it was x-mas and all :) ) so I'm good for another year and a half.
