Classic Ratchet & Clank Resurrection Is Just What PS4 Needs
I know it's just a remake of the original, and I know we've seen plenty of remakes, remasters, HD upgrades, etc.
One could also make the argument that they'd rather see a brand new Ratchet & Clank designed specifically for PlayStation 4. I get all that.
But there's something special about the original R&C classic. I think it speaks to the unique attraction of certain PlayStation IPs; there's such an abundance of creativity and overall appeal, and let's not forget that we really don't have this type of gameplay anymore. Also, you have to respect a development team that opts to rebuild an old game from the ground up, so it will shine on a new piece of hardware.
Recent videos were just plain sparkling and early impressions thus far have been extremely favorable. Yes, nostalgia is indeed playing a role but it's also true to say that in this current age of video games, a Ratchet & Clank just doesn't exist. It doesn't exist in terms of lighthearted tone and style (with a few exceptions in the smaller, lower-budget digital space) and it certainly doesn't exist in regards to gameplay. That mix of platforming and third-person shooting was unique then and it remains unique.
There's nothing wrong with progress. But there's also nothing wrong with revisiting brilliant productions from yesteryear, especially when those productions offer gamers a respite from the new and seemingly endless line of gritty, realistic and hugely in-depth experiences. Me, I never finished R&C and I can't wait to give it a go once again.
