E3 2013: PS4 To Cost $399, Will Launch This Holiday Season

That hurts, doesn't it, Microsoft?

Sony has just announced that the PlayStation 4 will debut at $399 in the US this holiday season. Unfortunately, we didn't get an exact launch date, as they're still saying it'll arrive "holiday 2013."

This is a critically important point- the price. And with a $399 price tag, that comes in at $200 less than the PS3, which launched back in 2006. Of course, we suppose you could add the cost of the PlayStation Plus subscription (as it will be required to play games online, it seems), but you gotta do the same thing with the Xbox One, yes? The Live membership needed for online entertainment is still in existence, as far as we know. And with the games they showed off at Sony's press conference, it appears that the PS4 is firmly in the driver's seat.

It was also announced that the Gaikai cloud service will be available in 2014. I'm going to go get some trailers now, just to make sure you see 'em all. :) There are many you don't want to miss!

well seeing that MS is giving gamers 'free' online versions of current blockbusters like Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2 with their plan and Sony is apparently releasing archaic $10 used gaming bin titles like Uncharted 3 and LBP Karting tommorow I suppose it could be worse.

But you will get to play Drive Club day one on the PS4. I assume that it will be a $60 game at retail. That there covers your first year of PS+. There won't be old PS4 games that they can place in the IGC for a few months anyway so you should get your money's worth for at least the first year. Will have to see where it goes from there.

Well, coming from someone who's been with PS+ since the beginning, the free games aren't as bad as you think.
I mean, you're complaining about getting AAA games like Uncharted 3?!
They released Deus Ex for free last month, and I was excited and bummed at the same time, cuz I bought that used from someone for $20 2 months ago. But again, the free titles are pretty good. If you didn't already have them in your library, you wouldn't be complaining.

Even at $50/yr, it's still cheaper than XBox Live Gold. Truth be told, I kind of see why they did it. Free online was a genuinely appealing feature, but it had to be incredibly expensive. Even when bowing to the realities of the market, they still manage to do right by gamers. The decision to choose PS4 over Xbone is looking better and better from where I stand.

Nice. Well, I think Sony did well to push back on MS's content rich presentation with their own lineup of quality, somewhat more single player focused, presentation. Sony did mop the floor with MS on the indie side of things though. I'm also pleased that PS4 exclusives STILL retain that premium feel. Other than that, confirmation of no crappy DRM schemes, no forced online connection, and a lower price point pretty much keeps Sony in the pole position with game players for some time to come.

They basically won this generation by announcing this and the no DRM.

I actually might get this for christmas at this price. 400 bucks is pretty cheap and considering I would have to get my ps3 fixed or a new won I might just wait and get this instead.

I know there isn't backwards compatability but I will probably be done with the PS3 after this summer once I get through the last of us and rayman legends.

Anyway I was really excited to see it this cheap.

Sony utterly massacred The Xbox Inconsistency tonight, thats not me being a fanboy - the evidence is global. Them relentless announcements about the PS4 welcoming used games, Not having to be online, being able to play games around friends - just all them advancements which if Sony conformed to would have become the norm, I applaud them for standing up against all of that and have tremendous faith in the future of the PS4.

The price - Well a console which is technically superior for a huge discount in price in comparison. I wasn't thinking of getting a PS4 until late next year, I was expecting it to be that price then but now... I may even give in early.

One thing I will say, I think Microsoft had the better display of games opening with Metal Gear Solid V was just epic. The only notable games for me were from S-E which I will no doubt talk to you on the other topic...

Don't worry. What percentage of PS3 owners have likely done that? Probably very few. Plus, the last thing you want to do is sanction every wannabe techo-clod to go digging around the inside of their fancy new machine.

Naw, if that's a feature it will remain an unannounced unsupported one.

I have 3 PS3s and I've swapped the drives of 2 of them, so yeah, people do swap the drives.
I even found that using a 7200rpm drive is slightly quicker on load screens than the standard 5400rpm stock drive.
I've tested this with KZ2 and some other games. Despite some sites saying otherwise, I'm here to confirm that swapping to a 7200rpm drive WILL speed up load times.

I love that Sony didn't endlessly push the PS Eye at all. They must truly know their fans do it better with a controller in their hands. This price point is amazing. My only other concern is storage sizes. My best guess would lean towards these units running SSD with the instant on features and what not. Being that I'm currently having a war with the price points of SSD, I can foresee some steep price hikes for greater capacity.

Here's to hoping I'm wrong...

I don't usually play online, but I think it kinda sucks for those who do, now that you have to buy a plus membership. People will be getting more than just multiplayer for their money, so that should ease the pain a little.

Features like video and photo share just add to the networks burden. Cross chat and a "real" friends list solidified my assumption that it wouldn't be free to play online. Free games monthly and universal PS+ usage along all your Sony products is ridiculously awesome, though. If you put it in perspective, it pays off much more when you can share your membership across all your products.

I thought about the preorder, but later dismissed the knee jerk reaction after considering the lack of technical data regarding other pertinent hardware information.

By pre-ordering early you normally get higher priority if a high demand creates a shortage. You have until the day before release to cancel a pre-order. Taking that into consideration, a knee jerk reaction is reversible and at Amazon there's no deposit required.

Xbox 1.... even though i believe it was best E3 for Micro its not running what Sony done.... PS4 shut down E3 & with 399 tag its booming on release. design remind me of Ps2 but with a lean.

Well, about that mandatory Plus membership... I need some time to let that sink in.

It's still a better deal than Live. I don't fault Sony-not at all.

The Plus club is a good deal for the right people, but not for me. It had *nothing* for me. I buy the games I want on release or shorty after, and don't have time for more than that. So to have the opportunity to play some games a couple of years after they are released are simply of no value to me.

So for me now to pay a monthly fee just in case I wanted to play a few hours coop with my buddy, now that *is* a sucky deal. Especially when I pay for something that *should* be free. It's not Sony who host the games, ffs - it's us who play them. I already pay for online access to my ISP.

But we need to just accept that. Look at it as a kind of alternative to a higher price of the box. Cause everything else - *everything* - we've heard so far is just fantastic. There had to be *one* downer in there somewhere.

and the only exclusive that Xbox showed that looks magnificent - Titanfall - isnt even an exclusive - its available on the PC too.

Annoyingly they have the jump on DLC for both COD and BF.

Sony should really turn the knife and announce the PS4 release date as Nov 5th with camo controllers for sale to mop up the COD crowd and disabuse this notion Microsoft is trying to push that only they are tied to COD.

I normally don't preorder consoles/games on online retailer.

Anyone know if there's a difference between preordering from Bestbuy or GameStop? Either one has a better warranty policy or such?...

Spec sheet says it's a 500GB HDD, which is good, but it doesn't indicate whether it's user-replaceable. :-( And it DOES come with a mono headset and HDMI cable.

Hm... well... I have three vehicles at the moment... so I imagine parting with one will be a worthy sacrifice for the PS4. Never in my life have I had an opportunity to buy a console day-one. This time... things are going to change.

sigh.
we pretty much learnt NOTHING about the ps4 today!
none of its system features, no release date, no SKU info, no ps eye info, no system UI info, no store info.

Have to agree with you there. Still a lot of unknowns. Will trophies and rank carry over? When the streaming goes live, will I be able to use my current game saves? They say that your PS+ account carries over from the PS3, but how will I be able to play the current PS+ games I have in my library? Will I be able to stream them sometime in 2014 or will I have to keep my PS3 to play those games? This is the first PlayStation system released (except for PS1 obviously) where no backwards compatability is possible on release day. PS2 had BC for PS1, PS3 initially had BC for PS2 and always has had it for PS1. Thats another thing, will I get another GB of cloud storage for my PS4 saves or will I have to share the GB I currently have with my PS3 and PS4 saves?

they need to clarify what gaikai will do as well.
the playstation meeting in feb made it sound like it will stream ps1, ps2 and ps3 games, but at E3 they said only ps3 games so which one is it?
hope it wont just be restricted to whats available as a ps2 or ps1 classic if it does support older systems too.
if you can play any ps1 or ps2 game through the service its going to be a BIG help to the ps4!
as long as its available everywhere too, obviously.
but i doubt that will be the case, even if it does offer ps1 and 2 games i bet it will be restricted to games which are already available as classics.

i really hope $ony is planning another playstation meeting before gamescom, we really need clarification on the system end features.
detail all the hardware, OS, system UI, and software details.
hell, have mark cerny on stage and say what should i demo?
than show how its done.
one thing i loved about $onys reveal of the NGP, the DAY it was announced they showed off the start screen and system UI!
really disappointed its 4 months after reveal and they still havent gotten to that.
exactly why M$ had the better reveal, they got the boring tech stuff out of the way so now all they need to focus on is games, games and games!
$ony, have so much on the system side to talk about.

To be honest, I don't think you give a sh*t about hearing all the details and info you mentioned above.
You just want something to bash and complain about. You're constantly tyring to tear apart something that, when compared with the XB1, it completely OWNS.
You get an 'E' for effort, I suppose... even with all your bad spelling and grammar.

This price allows me to get it day one plus 2 games. Having Plus to play online doesn't bother me since I've been a Plus member since the beginning. You truly get what you pay for and more with Plus. I don't think I've ever seen a E3 that was so thoroughly dominated..to the point I'll be a one console man next gen..

nobody should complain about needing playstation plus to play onine.

compare playstation plus to xbox live gold, i think you'll
see that with playstation plus you're getting more for your
money than you would with xbox live gold.

I agree, I thought it was silly PSN was free. Servers and Network infrastructure costs a lot of money to keep them operating efficiently. I am just so glad that Sony threw the MP cost of connection into PS+ and didn't add an additional $50 cost. PS+ by itself is easily worth $50. You get it back in the first month. So in all essence the PSN is still free. It's just depends on your point of view.

Preordered last night from Amazon! Truly amazing E3 conference by Sony. Destiny is my current #1 anticipated 3rd party title. A little Defiance, Borderlands with stunning graphics = WINNING!!!! Sony E3 conference reminded me of the end of Rocky IV! :)

I just needed Sony to show good games and exclusives for me to pre-order and they did just that. Sony showed me enough not to care what others are doing on other consoles. I don't want more than one console as I don't have much spare time. But what M$ has shown for xone and what Sony showed us for even whats coming out for PS3 with titles such as GT 6 etc. If I didn't own a console and the only two console availible this holidays were to be xbox one and the aging PS3. I would choose PS3. The Last of US would be worth the purchase over anything M$ showed.
So PS4 for me most defiantely and a much cheaper console aswell. Good move to attract xbox players to PS4. The xbox one at £425 in the UK is the same launch price as the PS3 and everyone complained. All the xbox fans said that price is way too expensive for a console, 'we would never pay £425 for a console'they said. Now look. £349 is a good price for any top console but when PS4 is $399 in US, its a tad unfair that in the UK we are paying $538. especially when its already hard for the average folk over here to pay their bills.

Apparently, Jack Tretton said the Plus subscriptions were to cover the expenses of the new services, but I agree with some of the comments above. There just aren't enough hours in a day to devote the time necessary to play all of the stuff that will be offered, so it just becomes like extra cable TV channel stuff we can't watch, either. The economics are the same, too. Spread the costs over everyone so that everyone can have it.
