Sony "Caught By Surprise" By Positive Reaction To Until Dawn
Until Dawn was a pleasant surprise for us and has actually become one of our favorite PlayStation 4 exclusives.
But what does Sony think? Well, PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida says he thinks it's a "sleeper hit," despite the admitted lack of advertising and marketing.
In speaking to Eurogamer, Yoshida first said Sony was "super happy with the reactions from people" and in fact, due to this recognition, "the marketing department can continue to support the title through Christmas with some creative ideas." As for why there wasn't much of an initial marketing blitz:
"People have asked me why it wasn't marketed as much as other titles. It's a decision made by marketing departments in each region. Because of the focus on this Christmas time-frame, to really support the big third-party titles like Destiny and these titles, they didn't see the need to push Until Dawn that much from the platform marketing standpoint. I think everybody was caught by surprise by the positive reaction."
Furthermore, Yoshida said the game's success is "a really great thing for the future of the interactive drama genre." And that's why I love PlayStation, because they're the only brand right now that seems to be allowing such productions to survive and thrive. Heavy Rain, anyone? Is it any surprise that Quantic Dream's masterpiece and Until Dawn are PlayStation exclusives? Here's hoping Sony lets Supermassive do another Until Dawn!
Alan Wake was on the wrong platform. Had it been on PlayStation, I'm positive it would've done much better.
