Gamers, You Had Best Prepare For A Low-Budget Shenmue III

All you Shenmue fans might want to start considering the possibility that you won't get exactly what you want.

After the gaming world erupted during Sony's E3 press conference thanks to the announcement of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, Yu Suzuki wowed everyone again by revealing a Kickstarter campaign for the long-requested Shenmue 3.

It went on to become the highest-funded video game project on Kickstarter, dragging in $6.3 million. However, that may not be anywhere near enough, as Suzuki has told Eurogamer that he "could use more money" and in fact, he doesn't yet have enough funds to deliver a visually stunning experience:

"I could do with a bit more money. The game itself doesn't have to be gorgeous visually - a lot of the money these days goes into the graphics. If we perhaps compromise on the graphics and put more into the story, we can make a good game. The most important thing, to me is that the game's interesting, and that it's something people want to play."

Developer Ys Net, founded by Suzuki in 2008, will get the assistance of Sony and Shibuya Productions but when you consider that previous entries in the series needed $70 million, and most AAA productions these days need between $50 and $100 million, you have to come to some conclusions. The bottom line is that a measly $6 million is nowhere near enough for any big-time video game these days and while Suzuki could get more, we should probably reconcile ourselves to a certain...inevitability.

Better cross your fingers.

I think it's most important that they focus on the story and the game play for this one.

I do think this is something of a backhanded deal though. The average Shenmue supporter put in something like $93. That's a lot. And it exceeded 3x the minimum amount to green light the project. AND it's the most successful Kickstarter in history.
The fans did more than their part and I think a part of that came in light of them believing the extra money would create something inline with the previous games.

I hope Sony steps up to the plate and supports Yu with more money because it nearly seems that the game was too ambitious for a charity effort to begin with. And it was Sony who brought him on stage to get this thing rolling in the first place.

Solution: Drop Shenmue HD Collection on PSN and collect money....

Dreamcasts with Shenmue are starting to pop up as wanted items! Sony should work with Sega to release the Dreamcast 2 ;)

Now if they're able to create an amazing game with 6 to 10 million dollars then that will leave a lot of developers with mouths opened.

Now if freaking Sega would release the rights to the first two games and allow for an HD collection this project just might get enough interest to catch the eye of some big donators.

A big expensive open world game that's heavily story driven, martial-arts based, starring a do-good boy scout who can't commit crime won't rack in the sales in this day.

I think that's awesome but I doubt investors will.

I'd be quite happy to take on a Shenmue 3 in the previous games engine, so graphically it looks like them, especially it makes the game full of content. I put $185 into the Kickstarter, so I do have expectations, but the game doesn't have to match the visual quality of current gen games. It's all about the story, the saga I want it to continue with dignity and experience the game we were interned too. I want the world to be full of life (128bit life if need be :P), people to talk to investigate, mini games to play and fun events to happen along the way. And a lead up to Lan Di.

i just hope he's got some mindblowing gameplay mechanics up his sleeves, coz a lot of stuff he invented way back when are so outdated and frowned upon by now.
story alone isn't gonna get the game far

Just let me finish the story. Let me kill Lan Di and avenge my father. All I want is some closure.

Just use the Unreal Engine, doesn't cost much and looks great.
No one is asking for qualities like CryEngine, R.A.G.E. and Fox.

I don't think it'd work for this game very well.

Yet he claims it would take 10 mil to make a TRUE open world game even though according to this article it takes 5 times that amount? Also who DIDNT expect a low budget game? I mean its KICKSTARTER of course its low budget lol.. Ive never heard of a AAA kickstarter

I wouldn't have it any other way... Well I would, but if it looks the same as before that's just great too.

So SONY hype this up at E3 like it's a big deal only for the project to fail to reach enough interest to make a worthwhile third game.

If they're going to give us a half-arse attempt then don't bother. This series deserves better than that.

Like the FF7 remake which will either not happen or wont be as amazing as everyone wants it to be, i had a feeling this was too good to be true.
