Naughty Dog Talks Uncharted 4 And "The End Of An Era"

Yes, sadly, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End will indeed be Nathan Drake's final adventure.

And now, developer Naughty Dog talks about how difficult it will be to leave such a landmark franchise behind.

Co-director Neil Druckmann told Official PlayStation Magazine (via GamesRadar) that despite being very busy, there are moments when the reality of the end hits home:

"We get more and more that feeling of this definitely [being] the end of an era for us as a studio. We've been with this franchise for almost ten years now from inception all the way to this point. Luckily, we don't get too much time to dwell on that feeling because we're so busy, but every once in a while... you know?"

Additionally, Druckmann said that after lead writer Amy Hennig left the studio, the story had to be changed significantly. Druckmann and Bruce Straley were brought on co-direct and not long afterward, they created a new direction to the project:

"I remember when Bruce and I came onto the project. A few weeks later we pitched a pretty new story to the team, kind of like a new direction for the project. A lot of things were pretty rough and just slotted in, so there was an ending but it wasn't as well defined, and at some point we defined more of the [plot] thread and a more definitive ending, and we did a second pitch for the team."

Nathan Drake actor Nolan North previously said Hennig's departure set the game back 8 months, which is probably why we didn't get the anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive this year. It's now set to arrive on March 18, 2016.

Yes, it will be hard to envision Uncharted without Drake. One Naughty Dog writer definitely agrees with that sentiment.

I think the story of the Last of us was way better than Uncharted 3s.

So I have no problem with this change.

I do wonder why she left or was fired or whatever happened to her. Maybe she was losing her touch?

I know she has written a lot of great stuff but yeah UC3 was pretty poor in the over arching story department.

Really? I thought the moment where you see Nate & Sully's introduction to be one of the best and most endearing of the entire series.

Thats a snapshot of a good scene, it had good scenes for sure; the adventure itself was written amateurishly.

Why does everyone focus on Uncharted 3? What about Uncharted 2 and Drakes Fortune? The former is arguably the most well written and directed game ever. Don't discount her because she's not involved in U4. TLOU had a great story but there's no doubt as a director she did justice to Uncharted 2.

To be honest I'd much rather play an Uncharted with her directing.

Without her Uncharted probably wouldn't have ended up where it did as a franchise. It's hard for any person and developer to live up to what Uncharted 2 produced. Don't confuse that with Uncharted 3 being "poor".

I think Naughty Dog has done us enough solids now to know that the name that really matters on the box now is "Naughty Dog". A change is not a concern!

The only concern of mine is making Uncharted darker like TLOU was. It's not a dark story arch. It's about adventure and the treasure loir and experiencing that with close friends and frienemies. The moment it gets dark is the moment they abandon what's made it great.

I'm excited to see what's next, like after another Last of Us because we gotta get that out of the way before a new franchise can be born.

Hey Ben, you made a mistake there.

>>>"It's now set to arrive on April 22, 2016."<<<

The game is actually set to release on March 18, 2016 ;)

According to the official Uncharted website, which i tried to include here, but then it won't get approved.
