It's Possible To Release A Higher-Powered Version Of PS4

Consoles continue to become more like PCs; perhaps the next step would be to offer the same console with varying capabilities.

According to what Sony Computer Entertainment senior vice president Masayasu Ito told Japanese publication 4Gamer (as translated by DualShockers), a "high-perfomance" PlayStation 4 model is actually a possibility.

Ito said that because the current PS4 machine uses X86 architecture (unlike the PS3's Cell processor), it's feasible that improvements could be made over time. However, Sony has no plans to do this right now, and wonders if they'll ever want do it, as it could fragment the console audience. The system continues to sell well around the world so perhaps there's no reason to mess around with the formula.

The other question would, of course, involve the price. How much more would the system cost and would it actually entice new consumers and fans? Would that group make the extra investment for Sony worthwhile?

What do you think?

They should not do it. This works for cell phones and other gadgets but not consoles. Just wait X number of years and release PS5.

My only wish for a higher performance in the future is............

that I'm still alive(63 on Nov 5th) to fondle that, all seeing, all knowing, all feeling "Playstation 9" in the palm of both hands!

Which I'm thinking should be around the year 2050 on a 7 year new gen cycle average or around 2045 on a 6 year cycle(Wish me luck on my survival for 2040, a more quicker 5 year cycle, LOL)

I've been in "financial hell" & back.

On Mothers Day weekend in 2011, I was caught in the mass layoff of all the day-1 employees at the Taj Mahal casino(21 years there, even before they opened).

Anyway I drained all my life's savings, then had to start selling off stuff in my apt including all my Nintendo consoles & hand-helds, along with over 700 games. Then since I could no longer afford the insurance on them, I had to sell off my Harley & my Ford F-150.
And cut off my internet.
At the time, I actually thought that I was about to become homeless.

But even though I despised myself for having to it, my money was completely depleted so I had no choice but to go on the pure hellhole of public welfare(after which I only receive $80 cash a month to live on).

But once I turned 62, I abruptly quit welfare & started getting my Social Security Retirement benefits(now I at least have a modest $342 a month to live on after paying my bills).
And I just got Comcast's 75 speed internet.

Gotta tell ya though, for all the honest people who really need it(not those money scamming scumbags), having to be on welfare is the lowest of pits, the employees act like their your God & that you should kneel down & kiss their ass, & they're more abusive towards the cliental than any sadistic prison guard.

It's a shame it's not legal to shoot a few of those f'ing bastards.

It would be a terrible idea because it would "fragment" the market. I knew it was possible and always felt good that it was never brought up. Now I worry.

Now this is definitely something they should do! Add a new performance model would add interest from a whole new market and would get rid of the problem right now where they have to keep costs down for the casual mainstream who only care about getting the latest gen console as cheap as possible, but those who would rather pay an extra $100-$200 for an actual high-end gaming console can do that.

I'm pretty sure I wrote something like this all the way back when they announced that the PS4 would be based on PC-tech and it's at least interesting to see that they're toying with the idea... I know I would be way more likely to get a new PS4S-model sooner rather than later if they did that...

One of the main selling points of consoles is the fact that you don't have to worry about different games needing better hardware. I already have to look at the system requirements when buying something for my pc, I like being able to just buy a game without bothering with that.

There's no reason why you would need to do that if they did this, because they would obviously make all games working on any PS4, but imagine for example they could easily make a new PS4 SKU where every single new game would easily run at 1080p 60FPS.

The good side of this is that sticking with the same scaleable architecture for future PS's pretty much garuntees full backwards compatibility of PS4 games.
