Sony Shows Off PS4 Headset, Charging Station, Stand

Things get sleeker and smaller when technology gets better.

Sony has provided us with PS4 accessory screenshots. We see the headset, charging station and stand.

The charging station will be able to hold two Dual Shock 4 controllers, and the console stand supports the system if you wish to stand it up vertically. As if it's any surprise, both peripherals are black, just like the system. As for the mono headset, it consists only of a single earbud, volume control and a clip to attach to your clothes. Of course, everything you see is essentially a prototype and subject to change.

The new controllers will retail for $60, as will the PlayStation Eye. We don't know how much the headset will cost just yet. There's still plenty to learn between now and the system's launch later this year.

what is this retarded thing? why release it at all sony just wait and come out with a full spec 7.1 headset like your ps3 one and pulse (not virtual this time please). the cord will make it annoying and the fact that its a console-ear-bud...

hope my ps3 one still works on it since theres bluetooth and usb

Don't freak out. This headset is included with the system just to make sure that everyone that purchases the system has at least one form to communicate online. Remember how many people were upset that the PS3 never had a headset bundled with it? Even if it is a cheapo one, the general public will be much happier with this and it won't raise the price ($39-MF-9!) of the console. I'm sure that the Bluetooth and USB headsets will still work with the PS4 for those that want that experience.

Yeah, I would definitely say the PS3 headset will work.

If you can connect it to your mobile phone, and PC, then you can probably use it for the PS4.

Banky, no, I actually disliked the technical problems you could get with a wireless headset, from connection problems to latency and cutting out. They never seem to fit on your head for long, either. Too bulky, too much of a nuisance to set up and charge.

This is a much better idea as it's an earphone (the microphone being on the controller). You won't even notice the thing is there when chatting with a friend.

Looks like a few bits of a disassembled guitar. Should be free with PSPlus.

I think this headset is included with the PS4. That's probably why it's a mono ear bud and not stereo.

Ear buds don't work for me, they always fall out no matter what I do. I guess it's a good thing then that I'm a single player gamer so this pile will just stay wrapped in it plastic bag. I also don't like listening to other people blather on about nothing.

I had the same problem until i got one that was actually shaped correctly for the ear and it works great, but this is for MP3 players though, I never used one for a console I wonder how it's going to be.

Has anyone ever used those skullcandy ones that plug RIGHT into your ear like a socket? *shivers* ooo I hate those things, I can't hear myself singing or anything else around me.

Yes I have, I own the Skullcandy Full Metal Jackets, I use those for in game sounds, good sound quality, best design earbuds out there in the market imo.. except I wish the cord near the tip bottom was designed as the ink'd earbuds.

Yeah, they are mainstream right now. A lot of electrical products come with those types.

I hate them, not because of the feel, but because they don't stay in my ear, they just slip out of my ear all the freakin' time. I prefer ye ol' earbuds any day!

I wonder how much that PS4 stand will cost. One of the good things that I like about the PS3 phat, is that it's heavy enough and wide that u can stand it vertical with no add-ons. I been having it stand for years, eventually I have it horizontal now near my 42" HDTV.

So I presume you can charge the controllers with USB like before? I see the PS4 had USB ports. I sure hope so, it just made everything so easy unlike the 360's battery packs and the Wii's batteries...

Correct you can also use the wire to charge it like before on PS3.

So wait, this means that the jack on the controller indeed is two way (ergo mic too), and not just an audio out jack? Excellent!!

This is in fact great news! That means there's a *huge* selection of regular PC headsets w/mic that can be used too - and even adding a wireless experience to the wired headset.

More compatability with existing hardware is a huuuuge plus. Yet another very good argument for why gamers should go for the PS4.

Looks pretty barebones, but that's the way to go imo - if people want a proper headset (and many gamers will already have one), then we don't need however many millions of full headsets produced and trashed (my packed-in X360 headset never got used as my PX5's do all the work for both consoles and PC - am hoping that the PS4 will sync with 'em as well).

mono?
WTF!?
come on $ony, 549 bucks i think you can afford to throw in a half decent headset!
f*cking greedy tight a$$e$!
next they will announce the included HDMI cable is a no frills one, and is only 30cms long!

hope next gen consoles will work with current headsets, just bought myself the turtle beach XP sevens today.
kinda mad spending 380 bucks on something that probably wont be able to use in 5 months, but eh my old ones broke yesterday and i need something to play the last of us on!

Eh - this is a mic/headset. For chat. Like the earpieces you get for mobiles. So yeah, this is a rather cheap alternative. But even my current mic is just a bluetooth earpiece with a mic on.

If you want something more expensive you got like a million alternatives out there. If you look closely at the picture you'll see it's just standard mini-jack.

Wouldn't you prefer have less waste? Many gamers are already set up with headsets - if you're into it and want a fully-featured headset, then get one. If not, muddling along with something like this is better than nothing. Having a whole bunch of mid-range headsets that gather dust (see X360) isn't a great solution and is incredibly wasteful.

you shouldent have to get one.
550 bucks, they should throw in a decent headset.
plus there adding this to try fix the problem of so many people playing online without mics, how poor is the quality on that mic going to be?
not really fixing the problem if instead of so many people not having mics, now have ones but are really hard to hear.
