PS4's 8GB Of GDDR5 RAM: Devs Say Sony Finally Listened

When Sony revealed their new PlayStation console to developers, they were excited to do so. Why?

Because this time, they listened.

During a roundtable discussion with SCEA vice president of publisher relations Adam Boyes (and as attended by PlayStation LifeStyle), Boyes said his favorite moment was announcing that the PS4 would have not 4, but 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. Originally, they were only going to have 4GB in the system.

Gearbox President Randy Pitchford flat-out told Sony that "if you go with 4GB of GDDR5, you're done." After which, the entire room of about 30 people said- "you guys, you never listen, you've never been good at this stuff." So Boyes steps back and asks the important question: "Are we going to be the best console in every single category?" And before they started doing what needed to be done, that answer was no. So then he asked devs about the possibility of implementing 8GB of GDDR5 RAM and the response was simply, "that would be incredible."

And so it is. That particular feature of the PS4's architecture has been lauded by just about every significant designer in the industry.

Sony is listening to the developers and it seems that gamer's wallets are listing to Sony.

We are already seeing it translate to huge consumer and developer interest, I'm glad Sony decided to not to be hard headed this gen. In the end these specs are going to allow for some incredible stuff, better multiplats, and more reason to buy PS4 over Xbone.

This! Great stuff. Hearing things like this (and there has been plenty of positive Sony stuff lately) is what makes me proud to still be a Playstation gamer. I do miss the SNES days, but I'm still quite happy I switched over to Sony's machine.

Sony has done the right thing from A to Z. The memory, the architecture, the unified CPU/GPU, the price point, the features, the controller, the focus, the entire register.

That's why we find the PS4 on top of the pre-order lists right now, and that's why it looks like the entire media *and* developer world are a bunch of Sony fanboys. They are not. It's just that Sony has done The Right Thing.

I completely agree. I know Highlander wasn't to thrilled from the lack of tech innovation, neither was I, but it was the right decision. Cheaper tech with less R&D overhead costs is a wise choice with today's gamers. Enough horsepower to show up the competition and a price to undercut as well. Less restrictions and more open platform for developers.....all great moves.

The hardware is just a vehicle for the software. No machine is better than the software that runs on it.

The cheaper the tech, the sooner Sony can begin to make money on the hardware. That's a very good thing. This machine is still plenty powerful and we've got some amazing games in our future. Listening to developers, respecting gamers and re-examining their whole mindset will really pay dividends.

He disappeared after the PS4 started to generate a lot of positive media attention.

I guess having everyone continuously shut down your argument must get old after a while.

Blank Line Guy also doesn't show his face around here as much anymore.

The Xbone converts are leaving us?

Awesome. If I had my choice between a more exotic processor, like a Cell, or a more conventional one like the x86, with the former having only 4GBs of RAM and the latter having 8GB, I'd take the latter.
Really, if Sony would've stuck to a more conventional processing solution during the last gen with a better memory configuration so many of the woes and headaches PS folks remember would've been wiped clean away. This time it's different. Similar to how MS listened to Epic when they pleaded for 512MB of RAM over 256MB, something that paid off in spades, Sony made a similar decision with PS4.
The negativity over XboxOne may seem bad now, but just wait once cross-platform games start cropping up considerably better on PS4 over time. We're talking a performance gap that will seem larger than the two consoles of this current gen.

Really hope with the PS4 that loading times start to become non-existent and waits to sync trophies, access PlayStation Store, and other features on the system start to disappear as well.

Granted I know there will still be loading times in games but with this much ram, I hope developers start optimizing their games better. Some games I played take 15 seconds to load. That's insane!!

15s is insane? You must have missed the 10 mins required to load MGS4...and that game was breathtakingly good. Load times don't bother me as long as the content in the game allows me to forget the time it took to load.

Fired up Killzone 3 the other day for the first time after I bought it on day one, only to be greeted by something like 20-30 second load screens for every level......

Also, is it just me, or does that game look really crap compared to KZ2?

It's great to see not only has Sony learned from that mistake (although I still think the Cell was very cool, developers are lazy and it produced mixed result), but now with the PS4, they've made it an incredible beast that when fully optimized (probably by Naughty Dog first), it will appear to be stronger than even the best PC's. It's already very high end as it is, the GPU is comparable to a 7890, which is a great GPU, and the xbox's is only comparable to a 7790, which isn't that good. The CPU is much better than the Xbones. Both have 8 cores but PS4s running at 2.0 GHz instead of 1.6 GHz. As any overclocker will tell you, that's a big deal, it greatly increases performance. Plus GDDR5 RAM, which is immensely more powerful than DDR3. I believe that 6gb GDDR5 would be better than 8gb DDR3, it would be in GPU's, but I'm glad it's 8. The PS4 will destroy the xbone, and it's already showing. I noticed in every xbone trailer that had wide open areas, even in MGS V which was cinematic, there was texture pop in. That's a crazy thing to see not only on a "next gen" console, but in a trailer. Xbox is done

Am so glad that Sony listened and went with 8GB instead of 4GB because if I was in that room and they said they were going with a 4GB GDDR5 I would have walked out.

I'm glad someone as awesome as Randy told it to them straight and and equally as glad Sony went out of their way to have the best hardware on the market.

not exactly sure that was a good thing.
obviously 8 is better than 4, but with such a limp wristed CPU/GPU combination it makes you wonder if they would've been better off spending their money elsewhere.
no point upgrading your engine adding a extra 300BHP if your gearbox is struggling to handle the power it already has.
see what i did there?
gearbox?
